I think there are people out there who grow out of listening to stuff like that, but that does not mean I don't think it sounds cool, I think people over time stop listening because a lot of it gets repetitive if you are not looking around more. I never liked metal for a while until I heard of Christian hard rock and metal. Stryper hits so much harder than the modern garbled demonic screaming. Metal is so Satanic, it is disgusting.

As an older, lifelong metalhead I would tell any younger people out there into this music don't give a flying F what other people think of it. Metal isn't for everybody. Some people -- maybe most people -- will never get it. Don't apologize. Don't try to explain why it's awesome. Just enjoy it and let others think or say what they will. There are always people that will pick at you because you listen to this type of music. Shrug it off. Like what you like and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Your family and friends may ride you over it. Live with the slings and arrows and if need be find some people that like what you like. We're out here. Some people say metal is dead but the fact that there are still more metal bands out there than even the most diehard fan can know says otherwise.

Even IF it were “dead”, that’s just another opinion. No need to even prove whether it’s “dead” or not, just rock out to what u love. Arguing over whether it’s dead or not is really just another argument for whether it’s popular and it never will be. That’s one of the many perks of metal. It’s not some “fad” or bubblegum “cool” shit to flaunt for a few months. Those of us who love it, love it, and it doesn’t matter AT ALL whether it’s considered cool or whether it has more up and coming artists or sales or whatnot. That's what I find really confusing as, in my opinion, Cate is trying to portrait metal music as something that isn't 'real' art or 'serios' art.. making the monster truck comparison is almost like trying to make it sound cheap and simple, perhaps childish, like a quick and simple thrill. Obviously as we know metal music isn't any of this, there is lots of depth and complexity that is spun across its multi genres.. yet a respected and known artist is trying to make a very sweeping statement while her own opposed musical tastes, if are as charty as I think they are, would be very shallow and schematic... Where was she really going with this? Can one provide critique with zero insight?

It's always amazed me in mosh pits how people can go from smashing the crap out of you to trying to save you if you lose your footing. Then once they're sure you're safe they start beating the crap out of you again. Good times.

As a female who goes to a variety of different shows, I agree with you. Metal pits tend to contain the most protective and genuine people. I suspect that it's all the crowdsurfing that works as a teambuilding exercise lol I always end up having such wonderful people around me who treat me like a longtime friend. Other shows, it's usually feels more hostile and cutthroat.

They say that mathematics is the language of the universe. I disagree. I believe it is music. There are so many different types of music that tickle everyone’s ear differently. Music is an expression of the people who are writing it. I have been a metal fan all my life but I don’t down anyone who is not. Like what you like without judgement.

When I met my (ex) wife she was into pretty much everything except metal, I got her into it pretty quickly just by taking her to live shows and exposing her to the real and raw culture of metal. She was mocked by her friends but after 2-3 years my brothers and I planned our annual trip to hit the metal festivals and we found ourselves needing two extra vehicles for all the females we had "converted". For the first time we were outnumbered by the ladies and it was a thing of beauty. We're still best friends but now she has re-married and converted her new husband (a die hard country lover) into a metal head. Just thinking of how many lives changed from me putting on "The end of heartache" and "my curse" by killswitch engaged when I first met her... it's wild! (We're all good friends to this day and going to shows/ festivals is basically our version of family reunions) "Rock out with your cock out and Jam out with your clam out" 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

I don't think Cate was trying to be disrespectful. She actually reminded me of my parents when I first got into metal. To people used to hearing softer, non distorted music, I can see how metal can come off initially as a wall of loud noise, much like a monster truck rally would. But hey, after hearing me listen to my music enough times, my mom grew to like it. She even liked some of it enough to buy her own metal albums. So who knows, maybe Kate is a metal fan in the making.

Thankyou & appreciate your time to show , an honest, respectable Robbie reveal how ignorance of others, that if in a position of power or who have greatness attached from their success can believe, wrongly have knowledge or falsify facts on topics and give another's interest such stigmata is unfair, biased if not experienced yet manipulate others or damage such excellences for the wrong reasons! Another example of to gain, through the shame of one's expertise or appear of better stature against another! Robbie standing up being true, an Australian with heart who would stand up for another, no matter the calibre, but for truth. 🕊️

I'm usually not into the heavy metal genre due to where and how I grew up. But I had, like everyone who tells these stories, a couple of friends (they were brothers) who put me up on some of the music & Slipknot was a band I remember vibing with. It was different af from what I was used to but...I don't know, I just liked the whole sonics and energy behind it. And, as someone who would write out & study the words of the songs I normally listened to, I knew these dudes were on some heavy shit, even if it wasn't in my scope of reference and put that way yet. Those dudes opened me up to artist like Slayer, Megadeath, Pantera, System of a Down, Korn, Rob Zombie, & some Marilyn Manson (that's a "guilty pleasure" of mine, but not for the troubles he's had recently). Point is, don't ever judge a book by its cover & I think it's extremely fresh that Margot took a minute to check somebody on their ignorance and disregard. I may not be of the culture per say, but, in general, metal has a special place in my place and heart.

Wife & mom here and the same age as Cate Blanchet and I love ALL different kinds of music. I can’t say I’m a big fan of heavy metal but I do love hard rock and rap and bluegrass and classical, etc, for no reason other than I appreciate any song/piece of music that stirs up a strong emotional reaction in me no matter the genre. Being an artist herself, it’s unfortunate that CB doesn’t give others space to enjoy the art that speaks to them personally. And she absolutely was criticizing MR’s taste in music. Very rude. That’s disappointing.

Someone needs to show Cate Blanchett a video from Wacken Open Air with around 100K Metal fans having a bloody good time. As an 80s Metalhead myself, I have dealt with this kind of ignorance since 1987. Heavy Metal got a bad rap in the 80s because its subgenres were very limited. You had Hair/Glam Metal, Thrash Metal, early Death Metal, and what we now know as Traditional Metal, or just Heavy Metal. But now, there are literally dozens of subgenres, and there is something for everybody. Hell, I've been getting into Symphonic Metal a lot lately. I think the orchestral backings bring forth the true roots of Metal that it lacked back in the Golden Era of the 80s, and that's Classical Music. For those who don't know, or haven't heard this before, but Heavy Metal is really nothing more than the combining of Classical Music and The Blues. I'll let you figure out which elements of Metal music are which. But because of this, this is why Metalheads often like Folk Music like Heilung for example. They don't use a single electric guitar in their music, but their music is about as Metal as you can get. Metal is more of a feeling or vibe than anything else. It's songs that make you feel strong, masculine, and powerful. As opposed to soft, wimpy people like K-pop stars for example.

And what kind of music does Cate Blanchett like? Mostly classical, and also Bob Dylan apparently, I found a "music that shaped Cate Blanchard" playlist. So it's not surprising that she thinks metal is beneath her, or whatever. How out of touch must a person be to have lived through the 80s and not listened to metal music though? She was actually saying more about herself than Margot with her attitude about the subject. I guess she spent the entire 80s going to operas, that's how boring she is. Probably also thinks tennis is entertaining, she's just that type. And people who go to monster truck shows are not the same people who go to metal shows, they're country fans. That's how out of it Cate is.

I wonder what Cate Blanchett's opinion on the late Christopher Lee's taste of music is. He was famous for his metal band background. And he was already a Hollywood super (rock)star before playing together with her in LOTR... Where her career basically just began.
