Sublime. An achingly beautiful piece of music, so beautifully rendered. The horror of mundanity and ennui, perfectly brought to closure by redemption and triumph. An utterly riveting version.

I remember that song so vividly.....we were on vacation in Yugoslavia in 1981....I didn‘t unterstand the lyrics because I was just eleven years old at the time with just one and half year of english at school. But her powerful voice overwhelmed me back than. Years later I did some research to find that masterful song because that was my final vacation with my beloved father ❤️ who died on Christmas that year. Thanks for uploading that version

No. It does not make sense, Shel said it very clearly that she jumps with the warm wind in her hair while she found FOREVER (note that word). He also stated it more then a dozen time that is is about suicide.

No-one can beat Marianne's version of this song. She captures the absolute desperation of Lucy Jordan, more so than Dr Hook, but that's the second best version with Dennis Locorriere. Maybe it's because it's a woman singing it from the point of view of a woman, I don't know, but Marianne's version gives you goose bumps, it's so realistic and frightening at the same time - frightening that a woman who you would think had it all but, deep down, has lost herself in the life she creates around her husband and children and has lost her sense of "self" but suddenly wakes up to the realisation that they are all off doing their own things and all she can do is clean the house or rearrange the flowers. Don't give up your day job, girls!!!

Marianne is poignant, but guitarist's rendition is too poor about sound and rhythm. I would have preferred her voice without such musical accompaniment.
@philipreeder69314 жыл бұрын
@@piarodidi8598 No Piaro! While Marianne IS wonderful and desperately poignant, the guitar accompanies her perfectly. It has its own drama and tension. The voice and guitar are a perfect blend. IMO.

Wow, this is Marianne Faithful at her very best. A song that tugs at one's heart-strings. So many once beautiful, celebrated women out there can compare their now so mundane lives to that of Lucy Jordan -
@tatia64112 жыл бұрын
Actually, the word "jump" doesn't occur in the lyrics as far as I know, she just CLIMBS the rooftop. And "she found forever" doesn't necessarily mean that she's dead. Faithfull herself said that Lucy actually intended to jump down but was taken away by the man in the ambulance (cf. Wikipedia article about the song.) In my opinion it's the nature of poetry that it is ambiguous, so I still think it DOES make sense, not more or less than your interpretation.

Personally I think the lyrics are ambiguous so that both interpretations are possible. Of course I know what "forever" means - I'm not stupid, you know - and I don't close my ears at all. All I say is that the other interpretation is also possible because of that passage with her riding in the white car. I think the best songs/poems are the ones that make different interpretations possible...

@scragger07 As far as I understand the lyrics, she doesn't plummet to her inevitable death. She is standing on the roof to kill herself but then an ambulance comes and takes her to a mental institution. "And she bowed and curtseyed to the man(...)who led her down to the long white car that waited past the crowd", so she doesn't realize it's an ambulance and she thinks the white car rides her through Paris. Does this make any sense? Oh and by the way, her voice is still beautiful.
