How to handle it when a coworker tries to make you look bad

I don't understand why people would go out of their way to make others look bad. I noticed that they mainly do it to quiet people. Trust me, I know from experience! People prey on the quiet people cuz they obviously envy something about them and think that they're weak. I'm a quiet person myself and pretty much everybody around me is always tryna find something's wrong with me and put me down every chance they get. Even though I get aggravated at times, I don't pay my haters no mind cuz they ain't nothing but attention-seekers anyhow. I would just keep it moving and go on by my business.

Like Marie said a while back if you reveal anything personal to somebody especially so soon, people use that as ammunition to gossip about you. Not only will they go around telling the whole world what you told them but people will twist your words around and by the time it gets back to you, it's something totally different. Not to say that you have to put a wall up with everybody but just be careful of who you open up to cuz you don't know who you can trust these days. I had that happened to me when I shared something personal with another family member and that person wanna go back and tell my parents about what I had told them. Mark Shelton Couldn't agree more. I have a relatively new hired coworker that nit picks about the silliest/ irrelevant things at work and says it inappropriately in front of patients. I am a quite person and do not enjoy being in conflict with anyone especially coworkers but this gal is truly making this once friendly working environment to a hostile one!

I have my supervisor and this woman on my job that would belittle me in front of other customers and this woman who's one of my coworkers claims that she's a Christian but yet she's mean to me and nice to everyone else. Omg this happened to me when I first started at my job. I was really nice and sweet and quiet...This one girl seemed extremely jealous of me. She would try so hard to put me down or make me look bad. Then one day I flipped out on her so bad like crazy in front of everyone and put her on the spot. Lol after that I didn't get any bullying from her. Great advice, Marie. I also think that when you love yourself and are confident and secure in who you are, none of this type of behaviour from other people will effect you. They do this to people just to test if you're weak or not. If you feed into their hooks and tests by being too verbal with them or by giving them attention they will feel like they own you. Don't put anyone at work on a pedestal and don't be fake with anyone. Sometimes they think that just because you're new you're going to try and be fake and try to fit in with everyone. Once they see that you're actually okay in your own skin, not there to please anyone and not phased by their behaviour, they'll leave you alone straight away.

It's the society we are living in. "corporate society" where everyone is worried if they are expendable or will be laid off at any moment. That's when people go into survival mode and try to solidify themselves as the most important asset to the company even if it means hurting co-workers they care about. When people are in a position where they don't know if they have job security or not, have kids to feed, a wife to take care of, etc - I find that's when people get desperate and start to do things they wouldn't do under any other circumstance. It's the people that keep it real, do not let fear overtake them, and do not allow their morals to be hijacked; these are the every day heroes. On the other side, if people are at a secure job and just loving the unnecessary drama; they are just fucked up individuals & don't deserve good co-workers or friends (period)

I've had results with these people by giving them a taste of their own medicine. It seems with these types the more you take the high road the worse they become. I said the exact same thing! The high road never works it almost makes it worse, and they start to see you as weak and will do it even more. Giving people a taste of their own medicine seems petty, but it's the only way people can truly learn. It teaches them how it feels and makes them more aware of how their own behavior comes across. There is a co-worker at my job that always points out people flaws to make herself feel good and powerful. I started pointing out mistakes she makes because she makes just as many as everybody else, and she got so furious and embarrassed. It was so satisfying.

I work as a dishwasher and I have had many coworkers gang up to try to make me look bad when I am working. When I am catching the plates that come out of the dish washing machine they try to put in the plates quickly to beat me. One time they tried doing it so fast that the machine broke down 5-10 minutes before my shift was over. I just smiled and said: "Oh look at the time, I gotta go." They all stayed serious and quiet lol. I beat them at their own game, and because they tried being dirty with me they lost and now had to wash all the dishes by hand. 😅

I remember when I was 18, I had transferred to a different store within McDonald's and there was a lady in her early 40's who was unrelentingly ordering me around like a manager would. She obviously was not aware that I had previous experience and was very efficient at my job, so she saw me as an easy target. I put my emotional feelings aside until I had gained the respect from my new colleagues and then one day when she bossed me around, I confronted her in front of everybody. Our voices were raised but I was calm and logical. She NEVER bossed me around after that and funnily enough, we actually became super good friends lol. I'll never forget that. Belittling coworkers, especially when they are respectful does not even compute to me. Such toxic behaviour goes against every fibre in my body and soul.

A coworker of mine is over all a person who is a trouble maker, yet plays victim if anything is done to them. I started at my job a year before she started. Within a week of her starting she was extremely rude to me, barely talked to me. Then whenever I was near her, she would proclaim loudly she needed to be in a different role because she has been in the industry nearly 10 years and shouldn't be in a low role. Then for the first time at my job a rumor had been spread about me not liking my role. Only one person fitted the description. I found out a few months ago the coworker had bragged to another coworker she tried desperately to get me fired. Even though there is no grounds to get me fired and I had a strong professional relationship with my boss. It backfired on my coworker and my boss had put the coworker in her place. I don't know why I'm a target, I guess it is because I come across as happy quiet person that minds my own business. So it makes me look like a weaker person.

I work with someone like this and at first I really tried to help but it just drained me and they got worse. Jay PelPel Oh Lord, I have been there myself. I had to deal with a copycat coworker, and it was awful. She copied everything I did, everything from hair, clothing, personality, etc. I had to distance myself from her after only two weeks of knowing her, she was that toxic. She followed me around, stared at me, trashed me behind my back, and tried to “befriend” anyone that I ever spoke to. She was very disruptive. I even had to start documenting everything she did, and went to my boss about her-twice. She gradually backed off, until the day she quit. Turns out, she had a bad reputation in the company, and was jealous that I was well-liked. Just like the Lizeth Marble said in her response, that woman you’re dealing with could be a narcissist, and these people are a trip. Narcissists are INSANELY jealous of people who have something that they don’t (status, looks, smarts, etc.). They will try to get close to you, befriend you, just to sabotage you. Be careful. I’m so sorry you had to deal with this-hopefully you’re still not dealing with it. I wish you the best!

I have had this problem numerous times and lost my job because of it. I work in the beauty sales industry. I am an attractive bubbly female with great communication skills. Whenever i join a company there is always this one female coworker who is jealous of me and tries to sabotage me. This has happened over and over again. Dear Marie, I am following you for 1 year, and I can't thank you enough. You already helped me so much! This subject really hit me... I looking for another job as the behaviour you described is the one I have to deal with absolutely everyday for 2 years. We are a very little team, 3 me included. We have a stressful job, but my direct coworkers are well know as being ' difficult personalities' it would not be so hard if our manager didn't got they back every time and then sugar coated me during evaluation meetings and then blank me out totally in front of everybody else. I was a very positive and outgoing person, not anymore. My couple suffers of it... The only option is to find another job...not that easy. If you have any advices... Hello Marie, I just watched your video and I must say you’ve given some absolutely brilliant advice. I’m going through a stressful tough situation, with a manager at my training centre. She critics everything wrong about me, wearing a coat in the work room etc, and she mocked my friend in an interview knowing that he is dyslexic. She is very arrogant in the voice, and is very narcissistic. She has told me that if I have not found a work placement soon, it would be a matter of time before she stops funding the training. She told me that everything I was saying about my efforts on job seeking, was a load of rubbish and mocks me for wearing a coat when others are too. The tutor started backing her up when he was wearing a coat too which was contradictive. I’d gladly appreciate your personal advice! Much love! ❤️

I ALWAYS found it funny how a person can EASILY point the finger at someone else, but can NEVER turn the finger at themselves. A longtime friend of mine told me that when you point a finger at someone else, you got the others pointing right back at you. That's how I deal with people that try to put me down, or talk bad about me. I make them look at themselves. It works everytime, because they get quiet and don't say anything else. They get mad at me, but I don't care. I tell them, don't dish out what you can't take. If you don't want others talking about you, then keep other people's name out of your mouth. Simple and plain.

Exactly! It seems petty but the only way to teach people sometimes is to give them a taste of their own medicine. 😂 there is a girl at work who constantly belittles the team and points out everybody's flaws just to make herself feel better. I started watching for her mistakes and as soon as she made them I'd point them out to her. She got so humiliated and mad. 😂 she can dish it but she can't take it clearly

I have this co worker, who ignores me on a regular basis but has no problem talking to my other co workers, yet he imitates me in all sorts of things, like I started working out. He also started working out, I grew a beard, he does too for example or I started talking to a new person, he started talking to that person too. I tried to stop talking to him because I would not waste my time on a co worker ignoring me. He did not take that well it seems, and started texting me “Why do you ignore me” and stuff. I guess some people like to control others with their emotions or its just jealousy.

Whenever I have a question to a colleague who is in the middle of something and busy, I have a habit of starting with a whispering voice “Sorry to bother you......”. In response, 99% of the time I get a vacant sullen look. On the other hand, if somebody interrupts me during my hectic hours, I respond with a smile, “Sure, no problem”. Now, here is one example of real life incidents. I have a colleague, who is half-deaf, slow and understands only a few words in English. One day she was working with an optical device, and I asked with a whispering voice if she was going to finish soon, as I was going to need it rest of the day. She answered, “No, no.”. I said with a smile, “Take your time. No hurry.” I had other things to do in the meantime anyway. Unfortunately, she didn’t understand the expression “Take your time”; she had no idea what “No hurry” means. In response, she gave me an obnoxious look with bunched eyebrows and barked, “Whatttttt?” Later she complained to my boss that, I was being rude to her. There was absolutely no witness, so my boss took her side, I was speechless, and I have never been able to correct my boss’s impression about me until today, and this incident still keeps bothering me, even though it was about 2 years ago. My question to you, what did I say wrong? Is there a better choice of words in English vocabulary or better sentence construction or polite expression in order to avoid such misinterpretation? Please tell me........

I have the opposite. People try to intimidate me cause I come off too strong. And Want to put me down but once they see I dont really bother them that's where it starts. And once they try me they see my other side and I become more unwanted if I may say. How do I get out of this loop. I'm in a situation like this at my job as well. I have a coworker who is mad because I got the job that she wanted. I'm a new worker who was hire from outside and she has been there for a couple of months before I got there. Every since I got there I was warned by my supervisor of her behavior because of the fact that I got this job. She would be nice to my face one minute and then talk about me behind my back the next. She has a two-faced personality because she has talked about other coworkers to me behind their back. She waits until I walk out of the room and then talks about me right along with my other coworkers. These women have not liked me ever since I started this job. I know and feel this and I just keep to myself and do my job. They do things to try and get under my skin such as saying insults when I walk by, I have one of these women who accuses me of being gay, she accuses me of being jealous of her and she accuses me of listening to her conversations when it's the other way around. She makes comments about the way that I talk. I never talk to her at all. How do I handle this toxic workplace without losing my cool? I've been ignoring their behavior ever since I started this job.

Omg this happened to me yesterday. It is my second week but second official day. I was told my name came up in a report in regards to something deleted in the system. You have to go out of your way to delete stuff in this system so I wasn't sure what he was talking about. I asked to see the report and he didn't show me lol. I just smiled and said I'll be careful when clicking around while doing my job. I showed him the work I was doing. He said he wasn't saying it was me but my name came up? Hmm. Anyway, I am at this job until someone tells me otherwise and will ignore it

I have a family member who's like this. He's nothing but a bully. Being older than him, I watched him being raised and his parents were hard on him. He will even say that his Dad's a %@#$*. I know he's this way, at least in part, because of his upbringing. He got admitted to the hospital yesterday and I went to see him. Almost the entire time I was there, he and his wife both were being just flat out mean. And this morning when I checked my e-mail, there was a message from someone else and informing me that he was still goin' off about me. I've always let it slide because I don't want the family to get into a battle but this morning I was determined to just tell him to stay out of my life from now on. Anyway, after watching this, I have a much better perspective on it. Thank you for the help.

I hired my worst nightmare. I’m am not her boss but gave the thumbs up when asked my opinion. Four years later it is my biggest regret. She spends her day rallying people against me. Especially new hires. Once she gets their ear they hate me. She “warns them” about me. I know it is because I am looked at as the strongest employee in the office that makes her nuts. Meanwhile She struggles to get the smallest task done and still screws it up. Yet I have always been supportive of her! I’m done now. Hoping the newbies will see through her superficial flattering and cheesy gifts that she brings them. It’s so childish because we are both close to 50 years old. The newbies are in their 20s. It’s hard to ignore because it’s a small office.

Yeah ive been at a new location with the same company and it went over like that. People only interact with me when they absolutely have to. When i go to lunch this guy says loudly "are you leaving us?" trying to draw eyes as if im storming out quitting. I say politely "no im just going on lunch." Little things like this they do frequently. The manager over me hasnt even looked me in the eye except maybe once per week when we're on shift together like 40 hours a week. The manager above him, facility manager, does talk to me. Only after i stood my ground about him obviously mocking me in front of others. He denied it of course pretended like he didnt do anything but then stopped the behavior mostly. Once i went to HR and i swear i could almost hear laughing in the background of my call with them as if they were making fun of me too. Then my district manager told me that calling HR was "airing out my dirty laundry" and i needed to settle it locally with my manager. Its like every where i turned i hit a brick wall. Chain of command is a joke cuz all the higher ups are buddies with each other and confidentiality doesnt actually exist. Then the curve ball they vote me "rookie of the year" for that location to shut me up. The facade that they like me is there but every day they dont even look my direction so.

I have to deal with someone like this. The problem is, she's untouchable because she's been there for well over a decade. Another guy who she seemingly took an instant disliking to basically got asked to leave the job because he called her out on her rudeness. She went to the management and they instantly took her side.

Hello Marie, I made the mistake of going out for drinks with my coworker, and it did not go well. I'm upset with how he treated me and I think he's disrespectful to women. I told him that it bothered me, and that I won't go out with him again because he's not dependable. He's well-liked at work & well-behaved, and has been there longer than me. I know exactly how you feel. I have ZERO respect for my manager, and at times, I want to knock him out too, but it's not worth losing your job or going to jail over. Just come to work, do what they tell you to do, and go home at the end of your shift. If it gets to the point where you can't take it anymore, go to HR about it, or just simply quit and find a better job. Hope I answered your question.

My employer had already have been through 3 schedulers I’d be the 4th I immediately told my supervisor when she started what was going on in the department and sure enough the trouble making employee got pissed off when the boss and I were working on a project together and the next day she tried to sabotage my work said I had made a mistake and I’d have to write an incident report I told my boss and she agreed it was totally out of line i told her she was the one to stop this nonsense and if I leave my coworker would be the reason every one in the office applauded me said thank goodness finally someone is stepping up and saying something she even transferred because the other office was on to her and she followed a friend that got the manager position to our office well she got fired and now she thinks she’s going to boss me around because she trained me while our new manager is in training wrong answer sweetie I’ll just smile politely and tell her to stay the hell out of my office and get a lock for my desk drawers

Your vids are great , i just had similar prob with a co worker. I complained to management and she came to me and with her tail between her legs apologised. I didn't let her get off lightly though I asked her why she did say the malicious things that she said about me. Suffice to say I don't think she'll be doing it again and when I do have to be in a room with her I just do the same as what you said just speak when spoken to keep it absolutely professional and do not speak any other words to her i.e. polite but cool.

That is good vice but something needs to be done on top of that too. It's unfortunate but you may need to set them up for failure and to make them look bad as well. In a way where they either do or don't know that it's you, yet they can't prove it at all. This lady makes a great point but something additional needs to be done as well. That way they know not to fuck with you anymore.

i too am in the same position except this girl thinks she has a big head more than anyone at work. some people notice and tell me whilst others don't breathe a word but can certainly see that its just her being her. we got along well in the beginning until she started to low key stalk my Instagram account and then from then it led her to what i can only put down to is extreme jealousy and outright bossiness that was projected onto me for her insecurities. she started treating me differently through ostracism and through order of how i should do things when my manager is completely happy with the way i go about things. ive got one piece of advice never add your colleagues on social media especially if you hardly know them you have no idea what judgement they will make of you or your life from pictures (mine were innocent with family and friends) however some people don't want to see you happy or sharing your best life no matter what.
