Hi Morag! Thanks for a very interesting presentation. Kudos to Brian and his great job with marine permaculture. When I listen to any permaculture presentation , it gives me hope for the future. Permaculture provides solutions to problems and that is a great way of dealing with environment without forgetting people and their wellbeing. I don't see that with environmentalists. Greta and her followers only create a doom and gloom picture and provide no solutions. They only create panic and no hope. They treat people as pests and weeds and have complete disregard of their livelihoods. Nothing happens within a day or a year and the process needs to happen in an organic way, not forced and rushed. That is a great distinction I see. Regards!

Remember that Greta is a CHILD who relies upon the adults of the world to provide solutions for the problems that they themselves have created! Maybe we need to give her a break. She lives in a world that is, like Australia, literally catching fire, while the governments of my country (the US) and Australia and others kowtow to coal companies and oil barons and continue to deny the fact of global climate change. We need BOTH: those that call out the deniers and create the panic that we should all be feeling, and those that create new solutions and therefore hope. I don't believe Greta has ever characterized people as a pest; she merely points out the destruction we're causing. And I don't think she has complete disregard for people's livelihoods; she just believes, as I do, that people should not be able to exploit resources that belong to everyone for the profit of only a few. The basic tenet of permaculture "the problem is the solution" applies here, I think.

That was amazing! I'm constantly thrilled by the potential that permaculture has in our world and knowing it can help our oceans brings me so much hope! Thank you for bringing this subject to us. On a side note, I live in California and would be interested in knowing how to purchase small amounts of sea "greens" for food, chickens and compost.

In nature Diatom Algae production is much more than macro-algae and azolla. They are the natural food for zooplankton like copepods, krill, etc, and herbivore fish. Therefore growing Diatom Algae is better than growing macro-algae and azolla. Natural Diatom production is estimated to be about 23 GtC/yr. There is no mention of the quantum of global natural macro-algae production in this presentation.
