Just like you'd be trained(hopefully) and not expecting but knowing you could have stowaways and/or takeovers you'd also think a captain of a boat that size worth that much from that departure area would know exactly where every UK/UN base was and how far they were from his own projected course to destination. Its not like the stowaways are likely to be able to read the instruments or know they are off course by a couple of miles. Either way they certainly chose the worst place to make their stand lol

I live in Poole where the SBS are based. On the evening of the tanker incident, the choppers made one hell of a racket over the town so we knew something was going down. A few years ago I once saw a few inflatables full of SBS marines training in Lulworth Cove (a local tourist spot). One boat left the flotilla, beached, a marine went into the water-edge cafe and came out with a big box of fish and chip meals which he took back to and shared amongst his fellows just off-shore. Always resourceful are our boys, which is what makes them so professional and deadly.

I used to live in Bournemouth. One day I was on the beach when a plane came from the direction of the airport at Hurn and straight out to sea. I can't estimate how far out the plane was but when it was over some boats close to the horizon, men jumped and chuted into the sea. It was awesome to watch and almost certainly related to the SBS.

The SBS are based in Hamworthy, which is Poole, it is also a training facility for them, but that is their home, so anyone being unfortunate enough to be a `Dick` within 5 mins flying time, is gonna get their asses kicked for sure. By saying some unit is the best means that the other unit is inferior, therefore is disrespectful. I always cringe when politicians say our forces, health service etc is ‘the best in the world’; this shows a lack of respect for other countries. My main point was - how can anyone possibly say one SF unit is better than another? Without pitting one against the other in mortal combat it is impossible to make a value judgment. They are all highly trained and brave operators who should be admired universally and respected, not treated like a football team.

My first full day at my Phase Two training base in the British Army was spent playing hostage for an SBS training exercise for very much this sort of situation, and not too far from where this took place. Absolutely professional and over so fast - about the scariest thing was listening in to their radio broadcast and hearing it just go silent, seconds before they arrived on the ship where we were (in our case, a Royal Navy ship playing the hijacked vessel). That was nearly twenty years ago, it's the sort of thing they train for regularly and rarely get to do. Absolutely as easy as a training exercise, as you say!

I'm sure others have already confirmed, but the SBS are based near Hamworthy Beach in Poole, Dorset. As a kid I used to spend a lot of time in Poole Harbour on my Dad's boat, and often remember seeing the SBS on exercises, either hooning around in their RIBs or doing static line jumps into the sea from a Hercules. Poole Harbour and Studland Bay are the perfect playground for them, and were also used extensively for training in the build-up to D-Day in WW2. To this day there are still 7 D.D. (duplex-drive) amphibious tanks in Studland Bay, which sank during training with the loss of six lives. This tragedy unfolded while Churchill, Eisenhower and King George VI were watching in person from the shore of Studland Beach. Oh and the two flags at the end of the video are the Royal Naval and RAF Ensigns. Like the channel too, you got yourself a new subscriber!

One thing that wasn’t mentioned was that there is a relatively large Royal Naval base which is even closer to the incident then Poole, Portsmouth. This is also where the two British aircraft carriers are based, and many other destroyers and frigates.
@TheMattlockyer

That’s why I think all these comments calling the hijackers stupid for taking over the ship so close to the SBS headquarters are so pompous. They had probably never even heard of Portsmouth Naval Base, let alone the SBS. To be honest hijacking a ship off the coast of any Northern European country is bound to fail. I read that the stowaways didn’t want to go to the uk and when they realised that’s where the ship was headed the hijacked it to go elsewhere. They would have had to have been pretty desperate to do what they did knowing they were in the vicinity of the home of the Royal Navy.

During my service I once volunteered to exercise with the Special Boat Service in Weymouth Dorset, basically playing the part of a hijacker for an hour or so, at the time it was exciting to see how they would treat us, how they would storm the ship and I thought it would be a really great jolly, oh f**k was I wrong!, my day went south very quickly, they literally attacked us from the air, sea and everywhere in between. before I could react I was trussed up like a turkey with a gun pointed at me, they were very very serious guys and I was super relieved and happy when it was all finished, I then realised what it meant when I was told beforehand never volunteer for anything, that's stayed with me since, lesson learned the hard way I suppose.

From what I heard, the stowaways were on the deck and approached the SBS guys to give themselves up immediately. The rest of the 9 minutes before the called in, was just informing the crew what had happened, asking a couple questions, then searching the ship I've not even heard that the stowaways were armed. At least, not with guns. It sounds like it was just some guys trying to get into the country so they can put their feet up and watch daytime TV on the taxpayer's money.

Although 22 reg SAS have a “Boat Troop” they are not tasked with the same roles. SBS commando’s can perform aerial insertions but mainly specialise in water assaults. The SBS had direct IEDD cover from a little known Royal Navy Diver unit called “Fleet Diving Unit 1 “ (FDU-1) Theses divers are not badged but train extremely hard in all areas of MCT insertion ,be that long covert dives on pure 02 ,parachuting,fast rib underways & hard caving ladder climbs from dry or wet climbs post dive…very hard physically & of course roping down to target which is what happened on this occasion. These men clear any improvised explosive device that have been placed & have a very short amount of time to deal with them. They also carry more kit & more weight than the Poole lads which all adds to the demands of the job….Yet they never get any recognition for the work they do & train shoulder to shoulder with UKSF…A very bespoke unit. I served with this unit for 6 of my 28 years served in the Royal Navy & trained hard for this very situation so I know exactly what was required & what they had to do. BZ lads. Be round to the “ island” for a brew soon.🇬🇧👍🐸
