True sign of a very dangerous man. They always try and make peace first till they are pushed too far. True fighter will walk away from confrontation unless he or she is cornered. Then all hell breaks loose.

If you read the book and saw the movie, it all makes sense. It's quite sad actually since it's really about Vietnam Vets that suffer from psychiatric illnesses. The movie is titled "The Ninth Configuration". Stacy Keach potrays Col. Vincent Kane aka "Killer Kane" who subconsciously tries to heal psychiatric military patients such as Capt. Cutshaw (Scott Wilson) to make up for the murders he committed in Vietnam. Kane himself is schizophrenic, having suppressed his horrific past and identity, by taking on his brother's Doctor identity, as a healer. Hence, his humbling actions in the beginning of this scene with the biker gang, until he's pushed to the limit and snaps. Killer Kane then re-emerges, doing what he did in his past. Killing everything with extreme prejudice.

Excellent example of WWII combatives hand to hand combat technical methodology in application as developed by Britain's William E. Fairbairn and America's Sykes and Colonel Biddle. Lots of forearm ax hand strikes to the back of the neck, palm strikes to the jawline, knife hand strikes and web of hand strikes. Aggresive striking and arm control in weapons defense and disarms. Nothing fancy just aggressive practically effective technique!!!

If you had seen this film (The Ninth Configuration) you would know the context of this scene, i.e. why he didn't fight until his breaking point. I highly recommend the film but this is literally the only action in the entire movie. It's the story of an isolated hospital for combat vets who are suffering extreme PTSD or other mental illnesses. Stacy Keach plays a psychiatrist with a dark secret of his own. I wouldn't want to spoil anything, but he is eventually revealed to be a Marine known as Killer Kane. Anyway, trust me, there is a reason (in this story) for him to be so passive at first.

Everybody seems to think that a marine would never have said or done what Stacy Keach had to do in this part. But what was Stacy Keach doing when he came to the bar? He was saving a friend. It was more important to him to save his friend than to save his self respect, even as a Marine. If any of you have been real Marines and not two or 3 year wannabes who found out like one who was a good friend of mine, it wasn't the fantasy he thought it would be, but really stuck it out, made it a career as long as they could, until they were injured, bad enough, they had to go home, who really believed that they could do some good, not kill a bunch of people, drink every single night, go to work with a hangover, most had a family. A spouse or lover they went home to, kids, friends and family that they hoped they would be able to be stationed near, or maybe an adventure one year over seas somewhere, maybe a lifetime traveling if they got the right spouse that would go with them. But I digress, Stacy Keach went into that bar to save his friend. Being in a fight was not going to save his friend, he did everything that this maniac requested, and he was told he could take his friend out. If you knew the whole story of the movie, he was testing this man and his honesty, but he was also trying to save his friend from any more harm. Finally, when they were harming his friend he couldn't take it anymore, he knew that no matter what he did, they would not allow probably either of them to leave that bar alive, but more than likely, he could make it out alive. His friend would be dead or harmed psychologically beyond relief. For a true Marine will do anything to save the life of his fellow Corpsman. That was the lesson in the scene. We always try to support a comrade & we never leave a body behind if at all possible. Of course, my history is of the generation that served through Nam, up thru 9/11 & The Corps is getting tired. The weight of a Nation can fall pretty heavy, even for the Leathernecks. Thank all for the time any of you have sacrificed in the service to our country, thru, any form of military. @Harry Clams It might well have been Harry. PRIME EXample: African American Servicemen coming home from every war they fought for in the name of OUR country being in a similar situation. My uncle's had stories of the mistreatment that they received from the people that were supposed to have been Americans. So, could it have been based on a REAL story or not REAL. Whether I believe it or not is my business. I served my country as well, So it puts me at,, I can think and believe what I want. If you've ever served, you'd understand. G*d bless America

Dam I'm old! I read these comments and people act like this is real!! Its a movie! Good or bad! People keep using reality to judge what a person would do! It's a dam movie!! Wow...

It's an old movie - really bad writing too - this made me laugh to tears - the corniness of it. Can't see anyone taking this for real - but I am sure there are some.

blumenthol “really bad writing”. It was awarded best screenplay at the Golden Globes that year, but whatever.

The comments on this thread are so funny. Never laughed so much, so thanks guys and gals. I would like to stress that this is one of my favourite films and fight scenes and I will never be able to look at it the same way again without laughing or hearing the Blue Oyster bar music playing in my head or the fact that some pointed out that the leader can do the full splits, wears a neckerchief, and mascara.

Painful to see the lowbrow comments on this. You can see other uploads of the same scene from people who have watched the film and know the context. Terrific scene and beautiful film. It shows violence as ugly, even when justified. Nothing heroic, or action hero cliche. The generation brought up watching capeshit seems to be unable to grasp this.

Never met a Marine who wouldn't fight. They're not all good at it, but they're all willing.

@Carlton Wilson I’ve never met a Marine that would have given that goon the first answer he required!!! In spite of the odds against walking out of that bar, every Marine I’ve every met would rather be beaten to a pulp instead of saying that Marines are chicken!! Unless they were sure backup was seconds away!!! Even then, I’d bet good money that a real Marine would rather choke on his/her own blood before breaking faith with their brotherhood!!!

@@AzzKicker-bz1cb Stacy Keach's character ( Killer Kane) is a patient in an asylum with mental problems after going insane in Vietnam and becoming a mass murderer. His mind creates a split personality, one of complete benign passivity. He pretends to be a doctor to heal others and "make up" for his "sins" by trying to prove that there is good in mankind.

slangen808 In the very real world, both on the street and behind prison walls. Marines will always fight, even if it means taking a beating.
@valiantsfelinesmccarty66785 жыл бұрын
Ok, I guess you are a bunch of jarhead wannabes, take it from someone who grew up with them and lived around them. Keach was protecting his friend, he knew if he didn't do what they said, they would hurt his friend not him. The boss was afraid of him, that's why the boss was angry when Stacy Keach did not start a fight because he knew that all Marines will fight. Kach had a friend that he had come to collect, and he was afraid that if he didn't do what this person asked they would harm his friend. Above all else, you protect your friend, even if you have to give your own life. That is what a true marine does.

One of the stranger movies of the mid -eighties (I think ?) A great underrated film that you got to watch closing, lots of little twist and turns. Keach turns in the best performance in the film.
