As a U.S. Marine Cpl. M-60 Machine Gunner attached to the 1st Royal Australian Regiment in Australia, 1974 Operation Kangaroo I. The 'Diggers' were Outstanding and so was their Beer (XXXX). Shout Out to my two best Mates, Cpl. Ian 'Spud' Murphy with the Royal M.P. Battalion in Brisbane, and Digger Rodney Jolly with 1st RAR. Don't ever try to out drink an Aussie, You will lose. and forget Rugby they sent a lot of us home in arm and leg Casts. Back then we had M-16's and they carried the F.N. FAL. My Section snapped to attention and Saluted an Aussie wearing 'Red' Captain bars, a half dozen Diggers laughing informed us He was with the Red Cross. I loved Australia, Wish I could go back and Live there.

4:10 the Australian soldier says "So much easier" when he's dry firing. Their weapons are very advanced, but not necessarily simple to use. Notice how much more recoil their rifle has, same round, NATO 556. Probably personal preference too, "the grass is greener" mentality.

Of course we do, Colin. When Britian fucked off out of South-East Asia with just under _seventy percent_ of Australia's expeditionary equipment, we were left to manage the Japanese alone for nine months before the USA could get geared up to give us a hand. And Thank the goddess they did get geared up so quickly! Anzacs are a bloody good force by all accounts, but even _we_ would have been overwhelmed eventually. You Yanks rocked up just in the nick of time. So from an Australian who knows how desperate things were during the Kokoda campaign: Thank you, USA. You did a bloody good job in the Pacific. Of course, I wouldn't be an Australian if I wasn't a little prideful, so... 9 months holding back the Japanese at 30% expeditionary strength??? That's gotta be a world record!

The fact that militaries around the world cooperate and train as friends is a beautiful thing. What is shown in this video is a wonderful sign of mutual respect and admiration for eachother and the rewarding attitude that while we can teach other people, we can be sure that there is also a lot that we can learn from them.

They have probably never served and therefor talking out of their fart holes. If they have served then they are jealous of the Aus Army for being better trained and able to do more damage with less people. If I remember correctly U.S Marines are trained for 20 weeks yet Aus Riflemen are trained for 28 weeks. After several years An Aussie can apply for 3 week SASR selection with only about 5 accepted at a time and on average 1 death during selection as they only use live fire in training and the training never stops until they retire or they die. Aus, N.Z and British riflemen are the highest trained grunts in the world with Canada, N.Korea and Russia not far behind and the U.S way behind as they believe number and weapons wins over training. It works in ours own backyard like Vietnam or Iraq but if we put 100 Aus riflemen up against 100 U.S soldiers of all sorts and Australia would easily win as our SASR would sneak past their Rangers, Marines and SEALS and send info back on a defence as we don't normally attack as it gives away our positions. Vietnam for example were more scared of the Aus Army than Americans plus their bombers as Aus just make people vanish. Brit SAS was in Vietnam too unofficially and no compo nor medals given to their wounded. That is the way Australia work. We don't want medals unlike U.S glory seekers.

The CANZUKUS alliance is the only one each country should be investing. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK and USA. Are wildly diverse on many things both politically and ethnically and socially. But we are also the only ones spanning the globe who have consistently stood side by side we are the only ones who consistently put our money where our mouth is. Personally as an Australian, I’d much prefer my government cut ties with china and just go with America and Britain. I’d also like my government to buy the obsolete American equipment. We can’t afford to build carriers and the state of the art Jet fights. But why would it be a bad idea for countries like Australia and New Zealand to come in and purchase the United States old ships that still work their old planes that still are great planes and pay for them and help offset americas purchase bill of the latest and greatest. Guarantee the American castoffs are better than 95% of the rest of the world, and we already know that if when Australia buys subs from America they get delivered. Unlike how we spent $100,000,000,000 on subs from a French business and 10 years later when the first was due for delivery they were still designing them and then demanding we sign up to a $10,000,000,000/year maintenance deal. Nope all the way with USA for me.

I can't believe the nonsense I'm reading in these comments. I am an ex serviceman and I served in Australian Army with pride. I have learned that all servicemen these days are trained to similar standards. (The rabble in the Middle East excepted). Accordingly I have respect, albeit occasionally grudging, for anyone with the guts to wear a uniform. So when I read these comments, people ragging on soldiers, my heart sinks. A 12 year old girl can point a rifle and kill you. That said, there is more to being a soldier than killing. I am talking about honour, pride, decency, a love for their homeland and their fellow man. To live and die with dignity, to stand tall with your hand on your chest at the raising of the flag. These are the traits of a true soldier. Writing the garbage that has littered these comments is not soldierly. Could you show it to your mother? Your sister? Your girlfriend? No? Then don't post it here and call yourself a soldier.

We use to be. From the mid 60's to the late early 90's each Section had at least two M16's in it (the lead scout and Section Commander, all the rest had the SLR L1A1), and every Inf soldier was instructed on the M16, plus other weapons. But when the F88 came into service that was all lost.

Our regular army use the Austeyr as their weapon of choice. 2CDO, SASR and one or two other units get to pick their weapon of choice - right down to the individual soldier in some cases - and they generally choose the M4 or similar. Conversely US special forces are often seen with an F88 Steyr... The Austeyr is a great combat weapon but the tolerances can be a tad tight making them more susceptible to jamming in sandy conditions. Sensational rifle for close quarter fighting - most bullpups are though.

The Aussies and US have been allies since 1918. We've been in treaty with each other since 1953, the ANZUS Treaty. The Aussie Army sent 50,000 troops who fought in Vietnam for seven years. The US based all of it's troops in Australia during WW2, MacArthur commanded them from Brisbane in Queensland. Australia has fought beside the US in more wars than any other country, even the Britain and Canada. We won't be attacking you boys with M4s :)

I know the M4 is a great rifle and the Austeyr is far from perfect (or too perfect depending on how you look at it - tolerances are too tight in some conditions) and I know our 2CDO and SASR prefer the M4 over most rifles indicating they're probably the better weapon, but after seeing the guys handle one then the other, the M4 just looks awkward. To all the dogs bagging out everyone else - when you eventually grow up and move out of your parents house try enlisting. It might teach you a little thing called "shut the fuck up".

ALSO, why the f**k would the American army be 'the best' if it needs heavy assistance from every other army in NATO countries? The US army is notorious for having terrible aim, terrible discipline but good equipment. A hammer made of men to which the government throws at the enemy.

It's cool to see our boys and the Aussies training together and all but, the video never got around to the comments by the troops. I'm curious what they thought of each others weapon platforms. Personally, I think they both offer differing pros and cons but most of it is personal preference. I think the M4 carbine has a quicker reload time as opposed to the back-side reloading of the Austeyr. On the other hand, the Austeyr has less moving parts and is less likely to have any jamming problems. So... I guess it's a matter of opinion.

Australian & u.s military's rifles like the M16A4, M4A2 & STG-77 are pretty easy to use. After all, it's mainly chambered in 5.45 & 5.56. In Türkiye, our service rifle chambering is 7.62x51 NATO from our Turkish made MPT-76, now that is a weapon with a lot of stopping power requiring a lot of training to skillfully control the weapon. But glad to see the johnnies not being left behind other nations.

Sorry everyone for the big response.. I just need to get this off my chest: @australbanian7 and Ahmet Zogu I honestly don't care about why you are trolling and hating so much..but please.. lets just get one thing straight here.. In this day and age why insult other nations armed forces? These guys are all heroes, willing to lay down their lives for their country, it is the same for most armed forces.. not sure if Albania is a conscript country so guessing that wouldnt apply? I don't know..not the point. I would just like to prove a point though..for everyone, paying out Australian soldiers is ludacrous. Ever heard of Galipoli? where the Australians had to storm a shingle and then cliff faces with machine gun nests on them..On the western front.. there is a town in France called Villers-Bretonneux, they have a plaque on entering the town that states 'Let us never forget the Australians', as the town was held and recaptured by Aussies who were outnumbered..honestly, just do the tiniest bit of research and you will find out that the ANZAC's actually had a vital and immesnse impact on WW1, it is thought that their contribution in holding key parts of the line against the German sormtroopers meant the war ended a lot sooner than it might have..then there's WW2.. ever heard of Kokoda? and Port Moresby?.. they shouldnt need to be explained..then we have Vietnam.. many forget that Australians went in there with the Americans once the French had pulled out..lots of young aussies were affected, listen to the song that goes 'he was only 19'..and then we have Iraq and Afghanistan which has only just ended for the Aussies.. except for Special Forces etc.. Anyway, rant over, I doubt, if you reply at all, it will be a mature response.. which is dissapointing, perhaps it represents how we have been brought up differently? Note how i have not used any degrading or disrespectful language?... that is all.

I can tell the difference between an incoming round from an AUG and an M4, due to the 'bang' portion of the 'crack/bang' phenomenon. The M4 has a much higher-pitched ring that can be picked up. Working with Marines was great, but yeah - they love numbers and firepower. Tactically speaking, maybe their field commanders don't have have the lateral freedom Australians have, to implement surprise, guerrilla, deceptive, infiltration or unexpected methodologies upon the enemy. Never underestimate an experienced or advanced Australian infantry section, let alone SAS or a platoon/company/battalion. Bold tactics. Good weapons. Teamwork. Trust. Discipline. Works every time.

The M4 is way handier with the controls and reloading (although you can get pretty fast with the Aug/bullpup with some practice) and the Aug is a bit awkward in that department (though it was partially designed that way because of doctrine) but the Aug has better ergonomics and is more comfortable to shoot.

neat video. it's interesting to watch each side explain to the others how their rifles work. I've handled and fired an AR-15 (the civilian version of what the Marines here are using, for those that don't know), but I've never seen or handled the Styer. It looks like it works well, though that mag being near the butt would throw me off trying to reload (bullpups not being something I'm familiar with).

Funny thing is having used the Steyr and then having had a chance to use the M-16 I really noticed the different weight distribution. The M-16 felt really long and heavy - presumably because more of its weight is further from the centre of your body. It's funny when you are used to one thing how different anything else feels!

yeah, I bet. And yeah, most of the weight is forward in the Stoner rifles (AR 15, AR 10, M-16, M-4 and those using the same pattern) Still a decent balance, but it's different enough that I bet it'd be pretty noticeable.

I've used the AusSteyr a lot. It's handy for those that shoot left handed but mostly its very ergonomic. It feels nice to hold and when you pick it up and even aim in the general direction you're not far off your target at

Slingshots, too, from what I ehar. Which is silly. We have push-button safeties on other weapons here, and air-rifles too. I don't care for them either. having a built in optic is nice, but at the same time it doesn't seem like you could change that. I'll have to ask around and see if any of my shooting pals owns one, see if I can take it to the range.

thats the major reason for these weapons familiarisation courses. It helps to let the guys on the ground understand the capabilities and limitations of their foreign counterparts.

Americans are good guys. I've worked along side them when they come here to Australia but they need to handle their beers better. To them a punch in the head is an event, to us nothing unusual.

The M4 is more ergonomic and easier to operate, but the F88 benefits from better accuracy at long range. It’s a trade off for the longer barrel of a bullpup
