Btw the olympics esports is going horribly. The 202(1) games were the first attempt, and they were all mobile games that vaguely resembled real sports. None of the usuals appeared; no Dota, no counter strike, no street fighter, none of that. Just some random apps that coincidentally released a few months before the olympics and have microtransactions. Some quick correction: This was not the first time that Mario & Sonic skipped an Olympic, there weren't any games for PyeongChang 2018 or Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. That’s because Ubisoft got the rights for the Winter Olympics. And no, I don’t believe the Summer or Winter series will return anytime soon. SEGA also released Mario & Sonic at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for the PS4 and PS5 as “Olympic Games Tokyo 2020“ without Mario or Sonic, instead the game had generic avatars (but you can unlock a sonic costume). SEGA also released the Mario and Sonic games for mobile but without the Mario Character, and they were called “Sonic at the Olympic games''. All of them were removed from the online stores

But to hear it's getting cancelled because of... NFTs? That's just a stupid business decision. Square Enix sold Crystal Dynamics and the rights to Tomb Raider years ago to start funding NFTs and they've never gained a profit back from that. But if the series had to end, it seems very fitting it'd end with the Tokyo Olympics

Honestly, I'm hoping Nintendo and Sega use this as a reason to make a proper Sonic and Mario crossover, you know, the kind people actually wanted. No one was asking for a sports series where Sonic's speed had to be nerfed for fairness. I think even a spinoff crossover RPG would work, though considering they've already done that with Rabbids, that might be highly unlikely.

Maybe we can get a REAL Mario and Sonic crossover

The first time that the Olympic games didn't have a Mario and Sonic counterpart was with the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics

As someone living in LA, I was hoping they’d make one for 2028 but now I can’t have that.

I'll never forget when this series was first announced, because it was the first time Mario and Sonic had ever appeared in the same game. All us OG fans were expecting their first crossover to be Smash Bros, because we still had those old console war days in our memory. But then it's like...Sports. Friendly competition. It was pretty disappointing at the time, but we got our violent plumber and hedgehog throwdown eventually so it's fine.

Arlo, if there is any time to care about sports, it is during the Olympics, WATCH IT!!

If the crossover sticks around after this, I hope they make an RPG. There's been a lot of interesting discussion about a Sonic RPG recently and I think it would be a cool way to combine the franchises in a way that doesn't feel redundant. Im pretty sure there was an old interview that said that the crossover was originally pitched as a platformer and nintendo denied it because they wanted it to be something that felt fresh for both series rather than just smashing them together so i think adding sonic's vibes to the Mario RPG style would be a cool idea that feels new for both series.

I'm just Imagining an opening cutscene being a "Mario and Sonic" version of the actual 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

Bit of a shame, considering Sticks from Sonic Boom managed to get into one of these games (the Rio one if I recall right), was hoping that would have eventually lead to more Mario and Sonic characters outside of the main series showing up; would have loved to see Tangle and Agent Stone playing volleyball against Foreman Spike and Funky Kong (partially joking, partially serious). Oh well...

It's Not Fair!! The Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games are suppose to be in the new one for Paris 2024. Aw man. That's sucks. 😔

We need an Olympics game where competitors aren't from a variety of countries, but a variety of companies. Nintendo,Sega, Sony, Microsoft, Namco, Capcom etc etc. Never going to happen lol.

I love that I just played M&S 2012 for the first time in years and now I'm seeing videos talk about the series' future. I really hope that they pull another one of the same caliber as that game.

Nah. Mario doesnt need Sonic. But Sonic definitely needs Mario. And Mario definitely doesnt need any blemish from Sonic.

@@DontKnowDontCare6.9eh, Mario crossed over with Rabbids and that ended up being a net positive for both series. I don’t think the quality of whatever Mario’s crossing over with really matters, as long as the developers have the right direction they could make Mario vs Bubsy: Olympic Battle into a banger.

You want to know something really funny about something like this? Apparently, the “legendary” anime creator Goro Taniguchi known for literally only ONE of the biggest and quickly forgotten fads in the anime world of the 2000’s ditched his NEW trendy multimedia project that already reeked of failure for a NEW NEW one harnessing the power of Web3 and blockchain and focusing on the exciting competitive possibilities of eSports! Ring a bell? I think a new trend is starting. One that will send destructive shockwaves throughout every media industry long before the out-of-touch Boomer executives and creatives retire in disgrace while actively blaming the consumers for not embracing the nonexistent emptiness of what they thought was free money from moronic peasants. Ubisoft and Square Enix tried this and was subsequently laughed out of the room. I suppose it’s about time for the business world at large to show how disconnected they are from reality. Bring it on; I’ll get the beer and pretzels.

The most interested I was in one of these games is when we say a cross over a Mario and Sonic a year before Smash Bros. Brawl. After that this franchise kind of just existed in the background I never really cared for it. Anyways the IOC is about to get a rude awakening with they realize that they are going to be losing money by trying the sell NFTs in 2024 and beyond.
