There's NO REASON for the Adventure Mode in Aces to be as hard as it is. I'm loving the multiplayer so far but I'm so glad I'm not streaming the single player because it's flat out infuriating. The snow ogre boss that blocks your zone shots? Get OUTTA here.

There should at least be an easy mode. I hate how you have to beat a very difficult story mode just so you can unlock stages for local play. I want more variety of stages, but I’m stuck on this story mode. I don’t even enjoy playing the story mode. Why can’t I unlock the stages in another way? Seriously, I feel bad for the young kids who are gonna get stuck with only a couple stages.

When this game was revealed I thought that it would be jam packed with unlockables especially with an adventure mode so that a little disappointing, still going to pick it up though. Great review and keep up the good content

Great review Josh. I agree with the problems you have with the game. Being a UI designer it kills me to know that this game’s menus are all text. It also has a problem with organizing and hierarchy. Why is swing mode it’s own option on the main menu but multiplayer is hidden behind free play? I have to say the character select screen and UI in the actual matches themselves are really nice though.

Josh, very fair review. I agree fully that the gameplay is phenomenal and the lack of characters/modes/unlockables holds it back from being a 9/10 game or better. It sucks you can't easily pick the court as you mentioned. Even worse, they failed to allow you the option to play 6 game sets and best of 3 and 5 set matches. How did they neglect basic tennis rules in a tennis game? It's like if they made a new Mario baseball and only allowed games with 2 innings. Or a bowling game with only 5 frames. Or a golf game with only 3 holes...you get the point. As a tennis fan and a Nintendo fan, I'm seriously upset about that. It's just a shame I can't play long matches with a buddy or COM because the game plays so well and is so fun.

I thought this review was very honest and fair. I'm glad there are still some people that don't give Nintendo a pass for everything they do. I think Nintendo is doing a lot better since the Wii U days, but they still have a lot of room for improvement, and hopefully they listen to the constructive criticism.

The GameCube version had way more characters and the special shots felt less overpowered. Also, the special shots were unique to each character.

N Pauli I really miss the uniqueness from those Power shots. Mario Golf also had that. Like Mario had a huge flame from the ball when you hit it perfectly and Wario had sort of like a lightning bolt. Every character just has the same spark in the newer Mario Golf games now. I don't understand how they stopped putting in little details like that. Most people don't even notice it, so they give Camelot a pass, I really hate that. Everybody thought World Tour for 3ds was good, but it was terrible. A lot worse than Mario Tennis Open.

Excellent review, Josh. I've seen this game get lots of 8 out of 10's and it feels like none of them remember where Mario Power Tennis set the bar. It's still quite enjoyable. The local multiplayer and core tennis is a good time and I think I like the adventure mode a little bit more than you did - but a 7 out of 10 is a very fitting score I think.

I was excited about the different trick shots and added gameplay. I liked the rock paper scissors, risk reward type mechanics. Graphically, it looks great and thought it had a lot of content. I haven't bought the game yet, due to reviews making me hold off, but I never really over hyped anything.

Ollie If you care a LOT about single player and not so much about multiplayer, then maybe skip it. But as for the online/multiplayer gameplay experience, it's not overrated or overhyped or bad in any way. The multiplayer is actually really awesome. The game lacks customization and the single player is good but not great, but if what you care about is the core gameplay and the multiplayer, then it's a great game. I'd really recommend it.

Elliot Duby They need to stop doing that. Breath of The Wild had a bunch of awesome trailer music that never showed up in the game either. That E3 trailer was so emotional, because of the music and it made the cutscenes look better than they were in the actual game.

Man ever since you went back to TheBitBlock name, your content really started shining again. Not that your older stuff is bad, I mean it did spark some interesting discussion. But this is the type of video that reminds me of why I subscribed 5 years ago. A very well thought out review that feels raw and genuine, isn't afraid to pull punches, and feels like an actual person talking rather than a robot in a human's body. I'm getting really tired of Nintendo using these free updates as an excuse to half bake their games at launch. It leaves a bad first impression in peoples mouths. Also one thing you didn't mention is that in free play you can only do 1 set matches and tiebreaker matches. WHY?! What was wrong with 5 set matches like the past? I loved my time with the demo and was so excited to get this game day 1, but after seeing all the reviews mentioning the weak points, I'm holding off for now. I'll just stick with Power Tennis for the time being. Excellent review, Josh. :)

Theoretically though, Nintendo could completely fix this game in an update (at least the multiplayer, adventure mode is a lost cause at this point): -Adding the ability to use different rackets for all characters -Fixing the menus -Adding more skins (yoshi colors) -Letting players disable trick shots using the X button (such a bad design choice, causes accidental tricks that fail) -Fun minigames (even Mario Tennis on the 3DS has great mini games) -Balancing the game (not sure if you know or care, but Bowser Jr. and Waluigi are considered way better than the rest of the cast )

Dude I completely agree. The gameplay is fantastic and me and my friends haven been guilty of the “one more game (especially online)” but the variety is minimal, the Adventure Mode -although I like it -is far too short and unrewarding, and overall I feel like it’s just missing that extra layer of creativity that the Golden Era of Mario spinoffs had (N64, GameCube). I will say though, this was FAR better than anything on the 3DS or Wii U (the Dark Era of spinoffs).

Apart of me believes the characters you meet in adventure mode are not yet completed as they never use a special shot. And what I hate about this game, aside from the missing characters, is you are forced to have stage hazards on for random online. Sure you can turn them off for friend matches but why can't we have a random online where hazards are off?

As someone who is really good at the game, the single player took me ONLY 2 HOURS to complete, beating every level and getting every racket, but now I'm left to only play the online mode. I can't believe that a video that is basically a rant about Mario tennis does not mention the most important omission... The game does not let you play a Full tennis match. You know a 3 sets 6 games each, like where the term "game set and match" originated. I understand a lot of people does not understand the rules of tennis but this is the equivalent to a Soccer game where there is no half time and change of court. A 1 hole only golf or a F1 racing game that stops every race at the 3rd lap with no pits mechanics. Tennis is about readings your opponent, changing and adapting each other gamestyles on the fly, managing your score and that can't be done in 3 game sets only.

The other thing I was disappointed in was the offline CPU tournament mode, there was only 3 cups to play rather than the typical 8 like in Mario Power Tennis or even Mario Tennis open. You don't unlock anything either from these cups which makes it pointless. There's no Star Player option or Star Tournament either. The 3 cups were also really easy, not even a sense of difficulty progression. You also can't do a doubles tournament.

I have no idea why more people aren't complaining about Nintendo's attempt at a Games as a Service model. This is the same thing with Splatoon 2 or Kirby. I mean ... FUCKING. KIRBY. is becoming a "wait for the update!" game. I get that these updates are free, but this is starting to get ridiculous. It's the same principle as when Street Fighter 4 had on-disc DLC, where the game had the content on the game but you couldn't get it. Sure it's free ... but it affects the games quality. Look at Arms! That was a game that had so much potential to thrive, but it had SO LITTLE CONTENT that it died out quickly. And that's coming from a company who makes the most content-packed fighting game (Smash). This just goes to show that forcing updates instead of just having the content day one ... IS affecting the game's quality! Thanks Josh for calling it out!

what I like is the gameplay & graphics. The game is lacking a decent menu (is dull and too generic), more game options (like choosing the number of sets), not being able to choose the court you want and also not being able to see a picture of them. Not being able to change raquets and outfits. Single mode is to short and there is no reward at all, as well in the Adventure Mode.

Nice, review. Definitely getting this game when I get money next month. Even though the story mode is lacking I don't mind them rolling out content with time. I liked it in Splatoon and Arms, too. Keeps me invested a bit more and the content doesn't overwhelm me but I understand that for some that's frustrating.

Good review BUT you completely missed the fact that you can’t change the settings to play a real 5 set match. We should have the option to do this and not be hindered by only playing shortened sets.

Great and honest review, hit everyone of my complaints and praises. This game feels so good to play but it just feels like if someone worked through their lunch break almost all the menu design choices could have been fixed. The one thing I'm surprised you didn't mention about the courts is that they do have the icons for them in adventure mode, it would have been a copy paste job to put them in the menu and have a select screen instead of deselect. Mind baffling. Personally I give the game an 8 just because I believe these things will be patched, they have to be.You should do more reviews, more often.

One thing that I haven't seen others complain about is a lack of complex stat keeping menu. ..all we get to know is how many tournament wins, our record and win percentage. ..that's it. ..I'd like more comprehensive personal stats like records against individual players online. ..win percentage with certain characters. ..drop shot, star shot and lob shot winner amounts etc. ..I feel like a lot of these weak customization options are just pure laziness.

Fantastic review Josh’s, and I’m not just saying that because you echoed all my thoughts perfectly, seriously, ring and item mode should be here, also what is the point of offline tourneys? Give us cosmetics or star characters! (And why no doubles tourneys?) anyhow, I loved the honesty in this, the game’s foundation is amazing, and I have no doubt in a year’s time it will be better than ever, but as it is now 7/10 is more than fair. I haven't played it yet so I can't say anything, but I suspect a lot of people are going to be harsh on this game because when we were kids and played the old mario sports game, we had a lot more time and there was more of an appeal to unlocking everything. I don't think that makes those games have a better value in my opinion. I loved mario tennis power smash, but it was still a lot of continuous tennis matches with mario's twist on it. I think there must be a ton more value with having this on the switch with aces but having online play.

I also think that this game should NOT be $60, mainly because while it's a good tennis game, it's not a perfect one. It's a step up from Ultra Smash for the Wii U, but i honestly think that this game is nowhere near as good as Power Tennis for the GameCube, which I still own. Heck, even Mario Tennis Open for the 3DS, which I also own, is not only a good game but it also gives more purpose to the player of the game with its modes and the mini games in there are actually good to go back to every now and then.

I knew this would happen! This is because they didn't add an Amiibo Functionality, believe me I got my preorder and was pissed to find out there wasn't any amiibos involved. Update: They better put an Amiibo function, in Super Mario Party otherwise it's going under 3rd. With MP 10 in 2nd and Star Rush in 1st. I rest my case. Yeah, I agree. The adventure mode, while a good idea, doesn't really offer any true purpose for playing it and it's also kind of boring as well. Nice review. The only level I got stuck on was Castle Bridge, I attempted it about 15-20 times. But yeah no big reward, no replayability, adventure mode level does not carry over to anything making it worthless. What you said is true about the unused tennis courts and characters, not sure what Nintendo is doing there (probs monthly release).To be fair, if they let me play Adventure Mode with all the characters after you complete it that would have done it for me.

As much as Nintendo promoted smash at e3 I know they are aware that people like being able to choose the ruleset for their play session. I can't for the life of me understand why setting the number of sets, how many rackets before a ko and even, wait for it, the course you play on! They need to fix that nonsense. The core of the game is super fun but I agree so much with this review. They got the mechanics right then phoned it in.... pulling out characters and unlockables (obvious that's what they did) so they can feed them to you as DLC is ridiculous

I agree with everything in this video. Bought this game at launch (I almost never do this anymore), and only played it for about 3 days, haven't touched it since Koopa could be unlocked in Tourney. Why can't we have another Mario Tennis from the GB Color era? Real Campaign, playing as a random nobody who leveled by winning matches and could also level more in doubles campaign!

The tennis mechanics are just brilliant. Local co-op and versus are great. Online is great.....but the adventure is horrible. Completely horrible. The lack of doubles tournament offline or online is a huge omission too.

On the menus: since when did textual menus make a game less fun? Tony hawk pro skater, the first super smash bros., NFL Blitz. I think they did a great job utilizing the on screen space.

I agree with you Josh. This is a bizarre move that was made by Nintendo and Camelot. Those characters should have been unlocked after you beat them in Adventure. It seems like Adventure is just a glorified tutorial. And actually, that's probably what it was meant to be. If they want people to be interested for months, just create new characters and courts. Even bring back classic courts from the past Mario Tennis games. Would love to play in the standard court from the N64 with music and all.

The only reason I kept playing adventure mode is because I wanted to unlock everything and it was way to hard it never got harder it just was this super hard difficulty though out the whole time. I never finished the final boss because what is the point?

whats annoying is that the story mode wasn't that bad but it felt very grindy at some points and pretty lazy. My biggest gripe with it is that it unlocks practically nothing of worth outside of the game mode itself. no costumes for multiplayer, rackets, new characters (you play multitudes of characters in it that you don't even get to use outside of single player). You only unlock some courts that pretty much no one wants to use anyway. its pretty insulting to charge full retail price on something that you gain little to nothing from the single-player. also the offline tournaments don't get you a damn thing either. There is absolutely no incentive to play anything other than multiplayer. This game does not deserve to be $60 and i have a bad feeling that they well incorporate DLC like smash bros did. If you're going to invest time into developing a game mode then don't half ass it. Just saying, "well there isn't even supposed to be a story mode in a tennis game so be thankful it even exists!" is blissfully ignorant, especially when said game mode offers little to no reward for completing it. I would honestly rather they hadn't included it because it was a waste of time. everything outside of the online tourneys is a glorified practice mode. I want to feel like I accomplished something after beating a game, not feel like I just did a laundry list of tedious chores. The core gameplay is fun but the game itself is shallow and one-dimensional.

Online tournament is too much of a grind imo. And you barely get rewarded when you win. It's basically just play until you lose and repeat.

I have to basically agree with so many of your points! (You don't even get to see the Power Stones when you collect one...) Exactly with the changeable cosmetics for the rackets! AND YES THE ADVENTURE MODE COURTS AAAGH... It's especially lame since the Petey Piranha court was seen in normal matches during trailers... I HATE the fact that I can't even select that I want to play a 2 out of 3 set match with my friends! How do they call it a tennis game if you can only play a set with 1 game per set! That is completely unacceptable!!!!! If you take the time to sit down with your friends you probably want to play more than just "Quick play". (-_-)

I agree with pretty much ALL of your statements here. I was expecting to unlock more maps and I think you forgot to address one issue that I, and I believe many others, find absolutely unacceptable... You can't change the number of sets and games you play in a match, you can only do 1 tiebreaker or 1 set... it literally almost kills the game for me, but I do like the game, just has things I do not like, I am very entertained with the gameplay of Aces

This game seems to be a lot like ARMS in a way. Little content, but 60 dollars at launch. The adventure mode would make up for it, but it only took 4 hours? Dang.

This game is woefully incomplete, to use a tired phrase. The simple addition of customizable characters and a complete local VS. mode would have been enough for a 9/10, easily. Power Tennis is far better than this game likely ever will be, to say nothing of the N64 version. Excellent review, I share your frustrations on this game's terrible character and stage unlocking system (or thereof).

It may be petty to mention, but it annoys me that some of the more recent mario games, such as this, continue to use character voices from games at least 10 years ago.
