Mark 38 Machine Gun Hits Small Boat Targets • US Navy

Weapons qualifications aboard the USS America (LHA-6). The Mark 38, Mod 2 30mm machine gun hits remote-controlled small boat targets on February 2, 2017. The test is called combat systems ship qualifications trials (CSSQT) and included upload/download, dud/misfire and watch-team training on both the Mark 38, Mod 2 30mm gun and the close-in weapon system (CIWS).

I was on this type of crew doing the same thing. The entire ship vibrates and you can hear it fire from anywhere on board. Its a smart weapon, it watches its target for Bout 2 out of 6 mile engagement zone. Studying the targets speed Nd previous location to lead its own bullets knowing the velocity of its own rate of fire and then within the 4 mile kill zone opps i got it backwards engages in 6 miles tracks for the first r miles and fires within target reaching 2 mils from ship. Sounds like a chainsaw stats when I was in was about 72 rounds per second. They are wearing gloves because of the slight radiation Hazzard. The rounds are made of depleted uranium so the rounds are Armour piercing. Also they dont have firing pins like conventional shells. They are fired by an electric charge so the gloves help prevent the unlikely chance of setting one of by static electricity.

The CIWS phalanx fires at a very high rate as it can be used to attempt to shoot down incoming missiles. Probably less practical against boats unless they are already very close.

This ship, or the 4-5 traveling with it, would see a fleet of 30 small boats coming from quite a distance. It only takes a couple of bursts from one of these to sink a small boat, and they lock on to targets by themselves. And that "single-shot" autocannon fires explosive rounds, 1-2 of which would kill everyone aboard one of those boats before sinking it.

@@LokiOdinssnn You can launch a cruise missile from a small speed boat? Or a torpedo? If each small speed boat was loaded with explosives and they were just headed straight for the ships in a swarming suicide attack, it may work if the ship is traveling through a very narrow passage. Even still, the U.S. Navy has known about this particular vulnerability for years and developed these weapons specifically to counter anti-ship missiles and small watercraft. And like I said, they have multiple gun emplacements like this on every ship which can auto-track their targets.

I think those are just the tracer rounds that they put in with the other live ammo to help them see where they are firing. I think it's like every 3rd or 4th round is a tracer.

It's the tracer that's attached to the round, it can peal off when the round strikes it's target and make it seem like the round bounced.
