Mark Kermode reviews A Walk In The Woods. Having spent 20 years living in England, Bill Bryson returns to the United States and decides the best way to reconnect with his homeland is to hike the great Appalachian Trail. Against his wife’s better judgement, he decides to take his oldest friend Stephen Katz along for the journey.
Please tell us what you think of the film -- or Mark’s review of the film below. We love to include your views on the show every Friday.

LOL, I actually for a moment when they started to play the clip thought Kermode was the one still doing a Nolte impression, even though it really was Nolte himself.

As others = possibly your best impression yet. And Katz was always the best thing about the book Something of a stretch to have Redford playing Bryson. But, heh, this is film-world, and I want to catch it at a cinema - but it's not looking good near Whitby..........so far

I want to see a movie of Mark and Simon lost in the woods now. With Mark doing the voice. And Simon trying to ignore it.

The only thing I remember from watching this film is Nolte’s quote ‘ I spent half my life chasing pussy and the other half I wasted’

+TwistedBishop Not really. I mean, it's a little bit sexualised, but not so much that Kermode's reticence wasn't peculiar.

The book is great but nothing about this adaptation makes sense. For one, Bryson and Katz were in their 40s when they hiked the trail I believe, they weren't pushing 80. And Bill Bryson may be a fine writer, but he certainly does not look like Robert Redford!

+Charlie Panayiotou To me it felt like the filmmakers didn't understand what it was about the book that made it so great

+Charlie Panayiotou Redford was 78 when he filmed this.Bryson was 43 when he wrote it.You sure know how to insult a guy.

+Karl Karlos While movie adaptations don't have to be entirely faithful most don't double the age of their two protagonists for one. Also, Wild only recently did this sort of adapt a memoir thing a whole lot better.

+Charlie Panayiotou Having been to see this now I came to the conclusion that if you had never read the book and went to see this you will enjoy this, the screen writers clearly knew the story they wanted to tell; I just don't feel it matched up with the one Bryson wanted to tell though to be fair I don't think they could without Bryson doing a Attenbourough 6 part series. What got me the most without wanting to spoil was the relationship drama. That was not in the book, why put it in there? It felt forced, uncomfortable and entirely unnecessary.

Nick nolte could of played Rooster Cogburn a lot more easier than Jeff Bridges, not that Jeff's performance wasn't nice. Nick Nolte would pulled it off effotlessly.

The film’s well acted, well characterised & is stylish, however the film’s poorly directed, poorly written, unfocused & lifeless. (48%) (2.5/5 stars) (mixed)
