A Walk In The Woods, starring Robert Redford, Emma Thompson, and Kristen Schaal is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemire.com).

In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson (Academy Award winner Robert Redford), instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Academy Award winner Emma Thompson), and large and happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail - 2,200 miles of America's most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek - his long lost and former friend Katz (Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who, after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law - sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before its too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, "adventure". Now they're about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins. (C) Broad Green

Ive done the Appalachian trail. You NEED to stop in hotels or towns in order to clean clothes, get food wash up, etc. It takes 6 months so its necessary.

+Alexander Forbes I saw it last night. I'm female and how this woman can claim misogyny is ridiculous. I'm getting so sick of all the whiny members of my own gender. By the way, there are no prominent female characters in the book. It's about one man's journey (Katz doesn't feature as heavily as presented in the film) to hike the Appalachian trail). The bit with the two guy's going on about Redford seeming dorky and having messy hair is equally stupid. He's trying to play a real life character, dumb asses. There must be no requirements to getting a job as a movie critic.

Damn, I wish this movie was better. I really love the book, I love Bill Bryson... but I can see why it would be hard to adapt it to a good movie 'cause there's just not much going on story-wise.

+Grace Kim Yes, Grace. I agree completely. There's a lot of historical discussion: trees, conservationists, civil war vignettes, tragedies along the trail, but don't you think they should have included every exchange with Mary Ellen? They were all so funny. They left out half . . . . like what they really said when she asked them their signs. And how she stole their last cupcake. Must read more Bryson now.

I don't know that this movie, like the book, is supposed to be about anything other than Bill and Kats's hike through the woods. It's what many of Bill Bryson books are honestly. If you ever read his book about going through America, or London, or Australia you will know that this movie likely won't be about a character going through an emotional story arc or learning something new about himself, it's just a movie about physical journey with humorous stuff happening along the way.
@Yahziboy
@Yahziboy 8 жыл бұрын
It would have been interesting to hear what they thought of the film compared to the book but none of them had read it. I have and there isn't enough in the book for a full movie. Over half of it is talk of trail history and botany. The other crime was to edit out more than half of the funny things they said to Mary Ellen and the funny things she said back. She wasn't the brightest star in the sky. And since she really did exist it is irrelevant what the film's attitude was towards her (as a female). She was a buffoon in real life and you can show that in film. It's OK.

Some reviews need to be researched before they are spoken. The author, Bryson, was born in 1951 but the book on which the movie was based was published in 1998 so the author must have been in his mid-40's when he had these experiences. Perhaps the original text failed to translate well into a screenplay in the Hollywood, "bucket list" genre. Bryson is a humorist although he writes about travel and history. In a style like S.J. Perelman's, he ridicules those he meets and what he sees. Perhaps the leads were too old for these roles and neither is well associated with careers requiring the frequent and successful use of comic timing or delivery.

The problem with At The Movies, with Vitaly and Christy, was that they adopted all the formal posturing of Gene and Roger. But when you're young, born in the 70s or 80s, it's no use pretending you grew up in the 50s. You can't talk like Gene and Roger talked. You gotta talk like a younger, brasher person, the real you, cursing and raising your voice and using your particular idiom. This is what makes What the Flick?! so good, is the shoot-from-the-hip format. Christy and the guys thrive here, now that no one is trying to mimic Roger or Gene.

Ben, you're the shit, don't let Matt talk down to you just because he's smarter! :p. Random side note, my favorite game of theones review / recaps are always done by Ben, Jon, Cenk, and Matt. No Ana or Brett Erlich, please. (yeah, I know that's going to be ignored but still).
@oldmoviemusic
@oldmoviemusic 8 жыл бұрын
+Gangrel Aussie Yeah - Brett Erlich ruins WTF reviews...lately he's been on some of their tv reviews, and it takes him forever to make a point, because he spends half the time setting up some lame comedy bit, and the rest of the time saying something completely obvious and lacking any depth. Ben, however, is awesome - more of him is always better!

+Gangrel Aussie "Just because he's smarter"? Spoken like a true narcissist.
@KainErrow
@KainErrow 8 жыл бұрын
Chris Wright I'm guessing you didn't realize that was a joke; i.e. I was poking fun at Ben, tongue in cheek? Also, how is that narcissistic? I'm not Matt, which is the only way that that comment could be taken to be narcissitic from my understanding.
@cjwright79
@cjwright79 8 жыл бұрын
Gangrel Aussie You were joking around yes, but you also revealed what you actually think. You say that Ben is smarter than Matt, and that's true, but he's also dumber. At a certain point being more cerebral and analytical ceases to pay dividends as you get more and more seperated from simple truths, honest answers, and appraisals that aren't primarily ego-driven. Ben is a smart guy, there's no question about that, but I sometimes feel like he's stuck in his own head because of that. He doesn't see his own biases, his own ego-driven agenda. Matt and Christy are more lucid and down to earth, and the things they say aren't so byzantine, they don't try to one-up each other. Ben's the type of guy who thinks he's just a little smarter than the rest, and that's exactly the reason why the opposite is in fact true.
@KainErrow
@KainErrow 8 жыл бұрын
Chris Wright When did I say I thought Ben was smarter than the others there? You're putting some words betwen the lines I typed that were never there, man. I think in places he's been right where they've been wrong, but vice versa as well. I personally think both Ben & Cenk are weirdly sexist in some areas while pathologically feminist in otheres (YMMV, naturally). If you're drawing that (the smart thing, sorry, longwinded here) from the order I listed my favorite GoT panel, there was no order, it was simple had the four people who have been on GoT recaps that I felt contributed the most. The only thing I really dislike is when they utterly dismiss arguments that criticize simply because they like a show (which mostly just happens when Cenk's on the GoT panel).

This panel has no clue about the reality of real people taking an extreme chance with nature because their opinions are limited by Hollywood's scripted formulas. The film is based upon Bill Bryson's memoir which according to Dixie of Homemade Wanderlust who has a vast personal history of walking America's wilderness trails is an accurate depiction of the life on the AT. Everyone who walks the trails has their own personal reasons for pitting themselves against the dangers of surviving the elements over months of walking thousands of miles. According to the expert, Dixie, who knows of which she speaks, the questions of age and one's BMI is also indicative of the panel's lack of research of the facts. People of all ages, sizes, ethnicities successfully walk the trails. I would give this review two thumbs down.

Getting two boring old fools to play the part was a mistake. The book was ruined with this crappy superficial attempt at a comedy skit. Kristen Schaal was the only thing I liked and wanted more of her. Nolte plays the kind of guy I'd want to get away from the second he shows up. Just a boring drunk with years of wasted living. The beauty of Nature vs the worst of Humans. Several of Bryson's books are better like One Summer and At Home; the History of houses.
