Such an underrated film. If you can handle the devastating drama, go with it.

I am so glad that I subscribed to this channel. I haven't seen this film, but Kermode just confirmed everything that I thought it would be based on the trailer. Definitely going to try to listen to this show every week.

This was a great film, far better than American Hustle and should have been nominated instead.

It's old fashioned cinema, an instant classic. Male angst I suppose sure but women aren't excluded from this piece.

Fantastic review. Fantastic film. *Double ‘ard* as they say on this side of the pond.

Bale was very good in this actually. The film itself somehow manages to portray deep characters with a lot of dark experiences without the viewer able to relate to the characters in any way at ALL. The film was grim in a bad way, Casey Affleck getting into the underground scene just seemed odd. Kermode says it - A list cast in a film that accomplishes nothing but dark desolation.

can someone tell me what it means when a film is shot on 35mm?
@davidalkhed33687 жыл бұрын
logical fruit It means the film was shot on actual film stock instead of being shot on digital.

I thought the film was actually pretty solid up until (SPOILERS BELOW) Dafoe and Caesey are killed. As Kermode mentioned, the small details were making the film great. Then after that it rushed along at breakneck page and just felt too dense to have any impact. Also the phone accidentally being opened and calling Dan was ridiculous.

Iv done it before while driving. Its not super crazy. The end was a little fast pace but its a pretty good movie over all

i like watching bale in movies, but i don't think he is a great actor, he has just been at it a long time to be absolutely passable and fine, but not a GREAT actor IMO, the film that has pointed me to this opinion is Harsh Times, hamming it up isn't the word!
@josemourinho402011 жыл бұрын
He hams it up in every film he's in and stinks up each movie. He's a wannabe Daniel Day-Lewis but without the actual talent lmfao xD

General story is pretty weak. If someone asked me about pieces of the film, I really don't think I could individually describe. There was just so little resolution in the movie. Different side to Harrelson. Guy was unreal, didn't think I'd be as interested him as I was. At the end, couldn't help noticing a break in character, Harrelson (like the dee) defenceless - the hunter becoming the hunted. Even Willem Defoe managed to get across a concerning greed for Rodney. The only problem I really had was the lack of Whitaker

This is almost like two different movies, not so much because of narrative, but because the first half is sketchy as hell and actually really boring. Nothing about the second half is new, per say, but at least it becomes much more solid. The writing is meh, characters aren't terrifically developed, and when they are, it feels obliged (specifically Woody Harrelson's first scene; it's way over the top just so we know he's a horrible person). Everyone does really well, though, which almost redeems the hallow writing and loose threads. 6.6/10, okay, one thumb in the middle, average, etc.

The film’s well acted, characterised & very stylish, however the film suffers from its lack of muddled direction, poor script & pacing. (60%) (3/5 stars) (mixed)
