Short explanation: Jojo did not steal Karma. She bought it from Rock Mafia. Ok so, Jojo is not in the wrong LEGALLY. The band, Rock Mafia, are the ones that wrote the song. They wanted Miley Cyrus to sing it, but she declined because she was working with Disney that the time. So, they got Brit Smith to record it, but she didn't release it. Brit Smith does not and has never owned the song. Fast forward over a decade later and Jojo Siwa decides she want to trade in her bows for black. She finds Karma and buys the rights to the song from Rock Mafia. NOT BRIT SMITH. Jojo begins to hype up the release of this song, in which she does not state, but implies that she wrote it but in a later interview she said, 'I wrote this song a while ago, but I wasn't ready to release it because I wasn't bad enough'. After Jojo releases Karma, she faces a lot of criticism. Mostly of her choreography, makeup, and outfit. A few weeks go by, and Brits version of Karma gets released. And then here starts the game of telephone where people start to assume that Jojo STOLE Brits song and that she is a CRIMINAL, and that Brit should SUE Jojo when that's just completely false. for her to create this false narrative of this song being meaningful to her AND to say that she wrote it is just crazy, but Jojo is getting exactly what she wanted. Right before this song was released, she was neck deep allegations and connections to child groomers. So, the more backlash she gets for this distraction song the more people forget about her legal troubles.
