💥QUICK QUESTION: Do you use at least 1 mask on every photo?
@ddki9094
@ddki9094 Ай бұрын
Yes, I use the sky mask/linear gradient on pretty much every photo with the sky since seeing that tip on this channel and for me it really helps eliminate halos that you may get if you don't use that gradient. Using masks in post production in photography in my opinion is very much the same as a record producer using a mixer to produce music; it is essential.

Years ago, I began editing using global adjustments, but have discovered the impact of targeted adjustments that can be applied using masking. Your tutorials have been invaluable in helping to refine this editing technique. The tips using the shift and option keys on a radial gradient are "worth the price of admission" 😊. I always walk away with a new learning. Thanks Mark.

Love these tips-- My only comment on the last tip you should subtract the directional light from the bottom of the cliff on the right side as the light at sunset would not be hitting that area as brightly as the angle of the sun would be lower

Hey Mark, just wanted to pop a message in thanking you for your content this year. I appreciate your complete willingness to show the quick tips and tricks to the “laymen” that many pros use, and though much of this content may be a refresh for me personally, I continue to learn from your generous sharing of knowledge, and recommend you to others. Keep up the great work next year, and thanks again for a real high point of photography channels

Thanks Mark for another helpful video. I didn't know the radial gradient tips about double-clicking or using the shift or alt keys, so I will definitely find those useful. Also the tip about using the linear gradient to soften the sky mask edge is something I think I will start putting into practice a lot to avoid the hard edge and also because a lot of times Lightroom's sky inadvertently includes distant mountains.

I primarily do my editing in Photoshop. Maybe I need to start doing these masks in Lightroom. I do not usually have much sky in my photos, but the light directional technique is relevant to bringing the viewer's attention to the center and subject. You are the gradient mask master.

I have never seen this sky mask/linear gradient trick. I'll have to give it a try! I do very little in terms of global changes. I do most of my edits using brushes. Mark, that effect in the foreground of the cliff was pretty cool. But that's where I would have just used a brush to darken up the foreground without affecting the water. More than one way to skin a cat! Another excellent video!!

I want to Thank You for showing all these editing ways making Lrc a fun program. This reminds me of the early days of Capture ONE and the layering on Photoshop. C1 was the early Lr of using sections in a image to adjust different parts, back in 2014 it was included with Sony cameras for $30, the bad thing was you had to import all images in a date file so you would just put one image in a file. As far as PS you play with layers of sections changing each to your likes, back then I would watch Trey Ratciff do an image that could never be capture by another photographer not knowing he used PS. A main reason not use or learn PS back then was cost $800+ and each full update. It was not till the $80 or so editing programs came out did us Hobbyist get into the Game of editing. Just as a note do not pull all images in Lr/Lrc for the updates will give you a new catalog and after some time like 3 years you will need a new computer and getting all your images transferred will be troublesome.

My first reaction was "Is the big difference between before and after cheating?" But then I remembered the exhibit I saw of Ansel Adams' proof sheets next to his final prints (at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson) and realized this is doing the same things in color that he did in monochrome (and wished he could do in color).

If the sun is setting in the top right of the photo, wouldn’t the base of the waterfalls be in a shadow because the light is being blocked by the cliff/drop-off? The top of the waterfall in the area where the water drops off is in the sun but not the bottom or the sides of the rock going down. That’s the way I perceive the light to be located.

The linear gradient alone would also affect the mountains and background features. Intersection with the sky means that only the sky, not the background, is affected, but the effect on the sky is lessened from top to bottom of the gradient.
