Thank you, I just removed the word “Passion” from the Statement of Purpose for a PhD Program :)

I’m really happy I found your channel recently. I’m in my sophomore year of college and I plan on going to grad school for economics. I wish I would’ve found your channel sooner, but better now than a year or two down the future.

You are my favorite person. I could care less about tiktok (despite the obsession my friends have), but I go off whenever there's a new Market Power video. Thank you so, so much! You are shaping so many future economists!!

Great video, very helpful as I think about pursuing a Masters and/or PhD in Economics! ....but also really hard for me to get over that you don't like dogs. I litterally had to pause the video to compose myself. 😂

Truth is, you weren't in the room when the admission decision was made. There could be other Yale students who used that word and got accepted. Ive learnt there's no one size that fits all when writing statement of purpose

What issues exactly? If it’s infrastructure that would be development; education/cultural could be developmental/behavioral economics; issues with jobs or industry could be micro/financial/industrial economics. Drill into these issues more exactly - much is tangential of course but identify a specific issue will allow you to better find the school of thought to apply

sir , thanks a lot for the unique insight ! sir , I`ve got a question . I wanna get an MBA degree from germany which has major in International Trade . I am thinking about mentioning the name of some good books ( e.g. Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell , The Box by Mark Levinson, Marketing Management by Philip Kotler & Kevin Lane Keller etc. ) in my Letter of Motivation as I have read them & these books motivated me a lot . NOTE I am a history graduate & I have relevant work experience . sir , please tell me whether I should mention the name of those books or not . . . . . thanks in advance

I disagree as there will always be a question about proving what you indicate in the letter of intent. Being passionate about certain fields or topics signals that you can invest time and effort without whinning because you like what you do, does it guarantee success, well there are other factors come into play, but at least showing your ingenuity and extreme interest in the topic is a good start. For me, someone says he or she made 200 KZbin would be a concern because of time investment on social media could hinder excelling in research or teaching. Being accepted at Yale University doesn't mean passion free writing was the winning recipe, I'm sure other factors bolstered your application such as the reputation of your undergraduate program, your CV, GRE scores, etc. The purpose of letter of intent, and in addition to knowing your academic goals, is to calibrate your writing skills and flow of writing.....similar to the writing portion of GRE.

I don't know if I have passion for economics, but I am intrigued by the math behind it. I would like to learn this and apply it to many other fields in my future careers. On a side note, I got a math question. I've yet to study the linear algebra of econometrics, and wondered if you knew what this meant since I know you've been through it before, but... I'm just wondering, what does the equation X(XPP'X')^-1'X'=X(P'X'XP)^-1X' mean? I heard many theories about it being a pseudo inverse, a left or right inverse, how it can be a nonsquare matrix that can only be inverted if it's multiplied or a product of its transpose. But what do the extra matrices sandwidching the middle matrices at the ends? Sometimes it's a vector so it ends up being a scalar or in econometrics, the average of residuals. We get into more complicated matrix formulas in that one which is a variant of the formula I showed earlier.
