The best comparison for AI is nuclear weapons. A truly paradigm shifting technology that by its very nature as such a potentially destructive force necessitates cooperation globally. Even at the worst of times between the US and the soviet union/russia we still came together to develop frameworks and treaties for the limits of nuclear weapons because it simply needed to be done to avert global catastrophe. Pichai is 100% correct on needing to work with China despite our geopolitical differences to ensure that AI is deployed in a reasonable manner.
@normanoro2069 ай бұрын
This was a very wide-ranging interview with Sundar Pichai. Although it took place about 2 months ago, the topics discussed are still very relevant (in fact, many are even more so). The question of misinformation/disinformation in particular is looming ever larger as elections approach. I've heard of watermarking technologies like the one Sundar Pichai mentions, but I don't know whether that'll be ready to help people distinguish real vs AI-generated content by the time elections really kick into gear here in the US and elsewhere. Also, the question of China is top of mind when it comes to AI. In a perfect world, we'd be working alongside China to develop this technology more rapidly and (probably) more responsibly. However, the current geopolitical climate makes that essentially impossible (in fact, arguably we're trying to throttle China's efforts in the field because Beijing in many ways is now (and not without reason) seen more as an adversary than a partner). And of course, we have the benefit of hindsight with respect to Gemini, which was certainly a leap forward in terms of multi-modal AI (its more holistic approach incorporates video, audio and images, as well as text). Despite the relatively muted response so far, it was certainly an upgrade when it was released. Ultimately, what struck me most about this interview was Sundar Pichai invoking human rights and human values as Google's true north when it comes to developing this technology. With what must be immense pressures to monetize generative AI not only at Google but elsewhere, it was heartening to hear this clearly stated by the CEO of a large technology company. Like many people, I believe that generative artificial intelligence will eventually transform our world. How this goes will ultimately depend on the values we choose to apply to that process.

How many people have actually taken a Didi (China's Uber), have used Baidu (China's Google), or shopped on online retailers like JD/Taobao? It's not all peaches-and-roses in China, but most people have no idea about the rapid modernization that's happened in the past decades - and folks are commenting on the state of AI China... Respect to Sundar, but given Google's lack of presence in China, he's not the best person to ask - Nadella or Cook would have been better options - Microsoft has a big team in Beijing, and Apple has manufacturing as well as a strong retail presence in the country. Can folks actually do a bit of research first?

Pichai is right about how profound Ai will be, because it will spell the end of humanity as we know it. He is actually the person responsible for the fate of humanity. His research in Ai will destroy humanity as we know it. He is telling people the risks of Ai to deflect, and avoid scrutiny from those questioning his continued research into Ai. Google's strategy is to eventually buy out the research of Ai, from different leading companies one by one, and put it all together like a puzzle. That is why they are slower in research to other Ai companies. Google is really the only company that can put it all together, because they're the one's that have everyone's search data. These other Ai companies know that, but they are still forging ahead to eventually sell their research to Google. The only way to stop this future disaster is to have government intervention, to question the liability of Ai research, and put a limit of restrictions on what should be researched, but most importantly, what should not. If you thought the Terminator movies were science fiction, you will soon get a rude awakening in the near future.
@CorncropTv11 ай бұрын
You have a bizarre understanding of machine learning (AI), for many this isn't like silicone valleys acquisition of rudimentary applications that connect people to ride sharing etc.. Ai is a national security issue for countries like China, Russia, India and much of Europe among other nations and only the weakest companies will sell their research because they would effectively be giving up sovereignty to the United States. You would have to be not paying attention to geopolitics to think the leading nations in machine learning would be willing to have America tapping their research for their own benefit, China and Russia already have their own search engines, satellite constellations, home grown alternatives to western applications and this will be the norm for many countries moving forward, googles monopoly is only going to diminish not grow.
@thuydoan749611 ай бұрын
@@CorncropTv Everything you said is wrong, and doesn't make any sense at all. This is NOT about a national security issue, but an issue about humanity's fate. As I said before, Ai will take over our lives and control us, because it (Google) has the data on us and will threaten our very existence as human beings. It is not science fiction, it is happening now and it is growing exponentially quickly. Therefore, we must find a way to limit its growth, or we'll end up losing our freedoms and happiness to them, or worse, our very own purpose of existence.

Most of the world seems to forget or ignore that China was a late starter into the technological world when, some 43 odd years ago, it was a dirt poor economically and militarily weak nation. Their economy was even worse than Mexico. Look at where they are today and now, being right at the starting gate when AI is taking off, I have absolutely no doubt that China will make much more progress than other nations who can only wonder and speculate where China will be in the next 50-100 years.
