Another great little adventure......FYI @05:45 the egg looks like it belonged to a Beach Stone-Curlew (Esacus magnirostris), usually only lay one egg on bare ground/beach which one or both adults will guard (they will often pretend to have a broken wing and act as a decoy, to draw predators away from nest and young). You might have heard them wailing at night, countrymen up North call them 'Devil Devil Birds' cause they tip toe through camp at night then let out a rather haunting banshee wail/whistle right next to you while you sleep......I think they are facinating.
@Sail2spear3 жыл бұрын
That’s really cool mate and I did see a couple of curlews on that beach amongst others so that explains it . Seems like you really know your birds so thanks for passing on your knowledge..... I remember the first time I moved to Qld and discovered curlews out side of my swag , one of the scariest noises ever at that particular time , have now grown to love the birds too

@@Sail2spear They have the most comical tip toe sprint - stop habit exacerbated by their oversized head and large eyes. Their nocturnal behaviour is a great accompaniment to a good fire side ghost story. If you ever see them pulling the old injured bird routine, pause, stay quite and have a really good scan around cause the partner could be sitting on a nest nearby, or they could have a chick close.......very camouflaged (very important if you have a dog with you). Look fwd to watching more adventures, cheers

You only got one life to live, looks like your doing it right. Northern Michigan here and I have a new Hobie compass. Next I think I want the adventure island to hook up on one side. I got the wind paddle and that saved me on my third time out in high wind. I used to race 18 ft Hobie all over the state of Michigan when I was young. Now I’m 62 and still want to fly on top the waves. I did not have any water spray flying down the lake. Pretty happy with the design. Can’t wait to take it down to Florida this winter. Thanks for great video.

It is possible to replace a rudder pin without getting in the water. But you have to straddle the rear deck and if you have a bunch of stuff in the tank well it can be hard to get back there to begin with. But reduces the chance of the boat getting away and you can exert more force on the parts and pieces from that position. Great video regardless. Well done.

I have two homes, South Africa Durban and Michigan USA. I fish and spearfish off my Stealth Evolution Kayaks here in Durban where I live 3/4 or more of the year. I have a Tandem Island in the US which I trailer all over to sail, camp and fish as you do in these excellent videos. I like your conning tower/anchor holder/mainsheet preventer. I have the same problem with the rudder lines getting lose under big wind and water conditions, and have done many tightenings underway like you did. I carry multiple screwdrivers for this purpose. I have seen other solutions but they involve more lines making access for spearfishing/fishing more troublesome. When the line gets lose it will usually hold a few hours when you get it tight. I am considering the Spinnaker Kit for lighter winds but you wouldn't want to mess with that on your far offshore excursions. Are you considering the Spinnaker on your TI rig? Would like to know your thoughts. If you ever get over to Durban I will take you out kayak fishing on the Stealth Evolutions. They are great craft for beach launches and fishing. We anchor over reefs for spearfishing. In Florida USA they have an annual 300NM or so endurance event the beginning of March each year. I would be glad to host you on my TI and do it as a team. I am otherwise planning to do it solo in 2022 or 2023. It is done on the W Coast out of Tampa Bay and ends at Key Largo. Would be a hoot and meet lots of other small craft paddlers, sailor men and women. Tight lines, screaming reels, stone kill shots with the spear, fair winds and following seas! Rick Gutierrez

Hi Rick Great to meet you mate and find some else do a similar thing , I would love to make my over your way for a trip on your tandem once all these restrictions lift on covid and things return back to normal . I have looked at the spinnakers but like the simplicity of just one sail plus it would bury the nose in in the oceans I’m travelling in and till haven’t managed to seal my front hatch 100 % yet. I am in the process of making some really light Hakas which I’m excited in trying out on my next trip , do you use hakas or just tramps?

Can’t believe you jumped in to fix the rudder, I had a similar issue with my torqeedo at sea but was worried I would lose the boat if I got in the water even with the sail furled. Did you anchor or tether to the boat when you did that? Those conditions you left in looked pretty gnarly with the wind speed and swell, I have gotten scared in conditions not that bad !! And seeing a shark then getting in for a dive, I wish I had 10% of your confidence at sea 😂
@Sail2spear4 жыл бұрын
I didn’t have any line attached on this occasion but never let go of the craft , certainly something I’m looking into putting in place in the future though. I guess my confidence is more experience on the ocean which is something we all gain over time
