My Dad started traveling internationally at 80 and only stopped travel at 95 and passed away peacefully at 97 with lots of fantastic memories and more friends around the world that could fit into the chapel at his funeral. I was so amazed at all the cards and well wishes from people my Dad met on his travels from around the world. I say keep going until you physically can't.

Hi Tina/Norm, just watched your mindset video again! Regarding ageing....just wanted to tell you my Dad lived to 100yrs 10months and likely would have lived longer had I not moved them to a "home" - but he was getting fragile and climbing stairs at home was frightening and I could only come at weekends due to my work - he would use a handrail to assist going up stairs and leaning back!! I used to follow behind because I was so afraid...Anyhow I wanted to tell that I lived in CH and had him over there at the age 92 - it was summer and pretty warm (we tried going high...but 27C on Rigi! - a low mountain about 1500m) and we WALKED day after day, did all the sights Saentis, Pilatus etc and like I said it was really warm but he took it all. We went to Chillon (near Lausanne) and the castle staff were so pleased when I told them his age, they let him in free!!! We were the last out and got a bit lost towards the end as the castle is a myriad of walkways....it was funny, when they were closing one of the curators approached us and and asked "are you trying to get out or trying to get in..." Yes its great to have health and with age we realize its the only true possession of any value.

I think the ages of the stages change depending on the person. My parents are mid 60’s and they are already in their slow go years. My dad had a hard work life. I am 45 and already having back and hip problems. Your channel has me motivated to try and retire at 55. I am hoping that will give me at least 10 go-go’s.
@ThisIsOurRetirement

@davidroush1224

I heard these three phases at least a decade ago, before I retired mid fifties so not new but still as valid as ever. They match what I have observed in many friends and family over the years. It helped convince me to retire early and do as much travel and physical activities as soon as possible while we still had most of our health and capabilities. The early retirement is cheating a little bit as we are trying and get 15-20 years of "go-go" years in before some health surprise forces the next two phases. Glad we started traveling and doing the active things at younger ages. Life has no guarantees and I watched too many people work a few years longer, then have some issue and never got the chance to do the things planned for decades in their retirement. We didn't want that to happen to us, and I'd suggest most readers don't either. If you love you job and it brings you joy and you never want to retire, that is great. But if you do plan to retire some day, then it is just a matter of money and tpicking a date. We found it better to move it up several years earlier. If you have the income/savings and things planned to do in retirement, it is wonderful and you won't miss work as much as you think. Good luck to all on your retirement journey.
@ThisIsOurRetirement
@ThisIsOurRetirement 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David for sharing your experience, we wanted to use these terms "Go Go years", etc in a more health related idea of retirement to try and show how fragile retirement can be from a health and mobility aspect. The major attention of retirement channels is financial and savings. We are happy for you that your plans have worked out. Have a nice weekend.
@davidroush1224
@davidroush1224 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThisIsOurRetirement - Understand - I don't remember when I first saw those three phases of retirement described, but they have been around for a long time. I took them to heart and retired early. Until Covid we were traveling a lot to Maui and Italy annually plus several other trips to make sure we got to enjoy as many places as possible while we still have our health. We have missed our month snorkeling in Maui the last couple of years and want to get in a few more years before our physical abilities make going into the ocean unsafe. Hopefully sanity returns and things get back to normal soon. I agree - most channels focus on finance and savings. But my experience from knowing hundreds of retirees over the years is that most actually do not have money problems. People find a way to budget for living and fun, some just more exotic than others. The biggest problem I have observed is when people retire with no plans or interests. They sit at home and watch TV or surf the internet and get depressed. Many don't live long because work was their life and they would have been better not retiring. I have "coached" several former colleagues getting ready to retire on how to prepare. Beyond the budget and financial aspects, I make sure to tell them to think about what they will do with their new found time and use it as an opportunity yo do the fun things they dreamed about for decades. For some it is travel, others finishing home or car restorations, some start a hobby/business, learning a new skill, take classes, or just creating a bucket list and working through it. The idea is to retire TO something fun and rewarding. The happiest retirees I know are the ones who are so busy doing things they enjoy that they will often say that don't know how they ever found time to work. My dad was like that, and fortunately our retirement has been the same. You two seem to have a similar approach and are enjoying the freedom of retirement. I hope it continues that way for you for many years. Have a good weekend as well !

Certainly good advice to visit the far away places on your bucket list first. Try and keep doing what you love as long as you can is great advice. Our Dad always said he’d take our Mum to Hawaii and he got into his 70s and certainly his 80s and I think worried about what would happen to him if he was taken ill so far from home (he’d had a heart attack aged 67). So they never got to Hawaii together. Anyway, long story short, we remembered this after our Dad passed away and realised our dear old Mum was getting older and wouldn’t be around for ever or at least capable of doing the trip, so we took her. She was 85 at the time! Yes, travel insurance was expensive, indeed there comes a point where you’ll most likely find no one will insure you, but it wasn’t too crazy price wise if I remember correctly.. If you want to go you have to pay it, simple as that. Shop around is the only advice I can give. The Post Office here was often cheaper than some. Age UK I think was another we used. Everyone we met on holiday was amazed when she told them how old she was and that she’d travelled all the way from the UK. I think Mum did better than us at managing the flights back home!

My husband & myself 78 yrs & 74 yrs are still in our 'go-go' years. Thoroughly enjoy travelling averaging 4 trips a year. Covid has put a temporary stop to this. Like so many others we have had to cancel numerous trips . Spent 3+ weeks in Mexico recently - wonderful. Planning trips to the USA and 2 to Europe this year. We pray God gives us quite a few more of the 'go-go' years as there is so much to see and experience in our world. Walking the Camino is one on our bucket list that had to be cancelled in 2020 because of covid - we are hoping to do this soon. Going to be one year older this year and are both raring to go. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. So many similarities in our retirement thinking. Thanks again.

And there's lots to do around where you live whatever age you are. In September (covid helped a bit since we were the only ones in the helicopter except of course the pilot) we took a Niagara on the Lake helicopter tour over the vineyards, the Niagara Gorge and Niagara Falls. A fantastic tour 20 - 25 minute tour (not a quick 7 minute one). It was wonderful. This year maybe Hot Air Balloon or White Water Rafting and who knows what else and we're apparently in slow go. Best advice I can give, don't wait for retirement to live. All life should be an adventure.

Exactly! All of life should be an adventure! You got that right! I was traveling during the working years as well as when I took off to freedom retirement at age 45! I tell ya, putting more than 10% of ones earnings each year into the stock market and in dividend paying stocks that are solid large cap certainly was one of the smartest planning practices. Now the trick is to learn how to spend the saved up money wisely and not save so much!🙃😳. Ahhh! The challenges of retirement eh!😉 Like "NOT!" Totally agree with you. We are in our 60s and retired. We have similar experiences and outlook. Two further points. We spoke to people in their 70s last year and they said they found cruising easier at that stage because they didn't feel capable of doing all the electronic paperwork required for travel. I started watching your videos just before I resigned my job, but because I’m a teacher, I resigned but still have four months to work. I’ll be done at the end of May 2022. When I planned to retire, I was thinking of what to do after retirement while my husband is winding down his working schedule (he’s self-employed). Then, I slipped on the ice and hurt my knees terribly. So, until I get these fixed, I am just not sure what to do. I want to travel, and exercise, and be with my grandchildren, but I can hardly stay on my feet long enough to enjoy it. So, do all you can while you are healthy. You bring up some good points. I totally agree that you should try to retire by 60 and get your travelling in. We loved our cruises to Alaska and through the Panama Canal. We went to Germany to see where my husband was born. Berlin was fascinating and probably the best place I ever explored. Now my spouse and our travelling friends and I are between 67 and 70. None of us are well enough to travel outside the country again so I am so glad we did so when we could. I am hoping that we can manage to take the RockyMountaineer train out west in the fall and maybe the Georgian Bay day cruise in the summer. There are lots of places we can explore in North America. You never know what is going to happen so do things while you can and treat the rest as bonus time. I have a cousin who travelled a couple of years ago to Iceland and he is in his mid 90's so you never know.

Just like to add that the phases are very flexible. Go-go might be longer for some, shorter for others. For my wife and I, go-go is up to about age 75 or so. The longer one can put off slow-go and no-go the better and the primary reason for slowing down (for most) is ill health.

At 74 yrs I couldn’t. disagree more, ‘slow go’ no way. I and many other friends (same age) are as active as ever, International travel and enthusiasm full on. Still in your sixties you are in the youth of old age. If our decades are compared to the days of the week, you are on Friday afternoon, I am on Saturday afternoon make the most of it. Really retirement for me is in two parts, active and less active, I am saving the cruising for the less active years. In my teens and twenties I was inspired by Paul Theroux “The Great Railway Bazaar”, now I find it absolutely fascinating to revisit many of those same places to see how things have changed. “The World is your lobster”

I don't disagree with your take on retirement, but you are generalizing. Much of your good fortune is genetics. My family rarely lives less than 90. I haven't had so much as a cavity in the last 40 years. My wife's family are what I call "death prone" -- virtually all of them die before 60. Renal failure, strokes, Lupus, etc....Be happy that you were dealt a good hand, but not everyone is so fortunate.
@jimwulstan8592
@jimwulstan8592 2 жыл бұрын
I realise that there are many people who are less fortunate because of inherited family health problems. After retirement my health was in decline but I very soon realised that the only to health and happiness in old age is some form of vigorous exercise everyday, no excuses allowed. My priorities now are physical/mental health, independence then money, in that order.

You two are the best, learning a lot from each of your videos however, you messed me up on this one. I'm a bit OCD and all the videos I've watched so far have Tina on the right and Norm on the left. You switched it up this time (yes, change is good, I know) but it weirded me out. If we were to get to one tenth of the places you have traveled I would feel completely satisfied. So appreciate you as role models for seniors, your zest for life and love for each other are truly inspiring. Keep 'em coming! (Note: Now I am seeing other videos where you "switch it up" - good for you). You're vids on Portugal are particularly intriguing to me.

Hope you are having a great weekend Tina and Norm. Love hearing about all your travels. We have traveled to Cuba, Jamaica, Cozumel, Portugal, Alberta and smaller trips to the US. In the summer we also love heading over to Manitoulin Island. With my mother, sister and aunts we went on a Alaskan cruise, went on a tour down east to Nova Scotia and took the ferry over to Newfoundland. My sister and I went on a 8 country bus tour in Europe in '97. When were school age we spent most March breaks in Myrtle Beach, went to Florida a couple of times as well, which at the time were so exciting for us. As a family when we were younger we also drove out west to BC and went up to Hay River, NWT to visit our uncle and his family there. Looking forward to traveling again, would love to do a European River cruise. Every vacation is an adventure. Thanks for another great video. 🌞❤

Hi Tina and Norm, We look forward to your weekly video so much. My wife just turned 60 last week, I turn 60 in July. We always assumed that we would retire at age 65. We have done an okay job saving and are fortunate to both have a very modest military pension that we are currently receiving, and once we turn 65 we both will receive a moderate employer pension. Our social security maximizes at age 67. My biggest concern is that I still owe about $120k on my home. So, we thought let's work until age 62, pay off as much as we can on our home, continue to pay into our deferred comp (via work) and just plan on leaving at age 62. Get a little part-time job a few hours a week and make do with the modest pension. Sell the house and downsizing to a smaller home, paid off. Then go, go, go.... and relax a bit. Does anything sound terrible about this? I worry. Trust both of your suggestions and if anyone else has any recommendations, please don't hold back. Much appreciated.

I thought you should know that (I am pretty sure) the Go Go-Slow Go-No Go concept and phrase was first popularized by Michael K Stein in his book “Prosperous Retirement.” I’m not sure if he actually coined the phrase but it’s use in this context dates back to this book which I think was published in the late 1990s. Thanks for the question Jocelyne, increasingly vacation companies are offering solo traveler discounts, many cruise lines have solo traveler cabins that you don't pay the surcharge for a double cabin. Perhaps travel with a friend and share accommodation. AirBnB is great because you can search for rooms not just whole apartments so you don't pay the double surcharge. Always look for happy hours for discounts on food and beverages, these are not just bars and restaurants but hotels too with free food in the evening (Homewood Suites). Thanks for watching our videos we really appreciate it Jocelyne!

Great video! What’s also interesting is according to Morningstar, retirement spending coincides with each retirement phase: high spending for the go go years (travel, adventure, etc), low spending during the slow go years (some say it’s when retirees have it figured all out, less travel), and high spending again during the no go years (the main spending is focused on healthcare). This is also called the “retirement smile” because the graphic is shaped like a wide letter “u” when shown on a graph. This will help people to figure, analyze, or balance their retirement fund during the 3 phases.

I only took a 3 days trip from Cape Canaveral to Bahamas on a Disney ship I kinda of enjoyed. Now being in stage 2 it probably behooves me to reconcider and start taking more cruises. It seems that there's a great savings on doing that (accomodations, food, drink and locomotion). Obrigado, pela informação. Até a próxima... 👍🙏❤️🥂

Great tips, a cruise sounds great. Is it possible to go over cruising details like cost, documents needed, what costs extra and what rooms/level do you recommend, what you can and can not take?...I think it would be very helpful for first timers. Please discard my comment if you already shared this type of video....I just don't recall watching it. Thank you both!!

go while you have got good health !!!, if you don`t you will regret it !!! I have been to China once because my wife is Chinese and visited the capital to view the hidden city, then we went up to her parents city , and came back through Shanghai airport. Shanghai was my favourite city for old British buildings, but the great wall of China was another must see for me.The flight times are very long with 3 plane rides. Next trip has to be Europe and the Med just to show Xioling the history of the old mother country.

Interesting enjoyed this. We were planning to do the Queen Mary 2 and stop disembark at Halifax NS before the ship goes onwards to Brooklyn, we have done many transatlantic. Then the pandemic hit so no way at present plus will leave Canada for a while due to mandates ( which I respect ) , hope to visit Nova Scotia one day and tour around Nova Scotia.... take care till next week

Love your videos, guys. About one year away from retirement and looking to move from dreary, gray Michigan to someplace with sunshine. But the world is a big place and we're paralyzed by relocation options. We know kind of what we want - but I'm lately wondering if there is anything like a relocation specialist. Have you run across a service like that? You have, btw, reinforced the exact advice we received from our financial advisor - retire as young as possible (we'll be similiar to you: 60 and 56) - while we still have the health to travel. Great advice from the both of you! Keep it up!

No we don’t know Fletcher of any relocation services , we kind of go along with what do we want and where do we want to go 🤔so far that is being in Canada 🇨🇦 the summers are beautiful , then need to be away over Winter either Portugal 🇵🇹 or the USA 🇺🇸 For 3-4 months that’s the plan .Good luck we wish you all the best 🍷🇺🇸🇨🇦🍺

I love your channel and just found it. We are almost 51 (me) and hubby turns 47 in august. I loved 🥰 your thoughts about protecting our health- I’m a homemaker and know being fit coming to the 50’s are so important. What age did you both retire? Your store is inspiring.

My husband and I are in the “slow go” time of life. Fortunately, we haven’t slowed down as yet. Recently we enjoyed a 17 day transatlantic cruise. Cruising is our preferred travel experience for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

American financial planners actual use those three terms: go go years, slow go years and the no go years. The idea is to show that you do not spend down your portfolio at the amuse rate in each stage.
