Story 2: Dad knew what he was doing when he went straight to OP instead of talking to OP's mom, and that's what makes him a 100/10 -sshole. Him being ungrateful for what he got despite his ex-wife-the woman he cheated on and the mother of the child he tried to guilt money out of-is a rotten cherry on top of the s-t cake. I feel sorry for the boy. He probably deserves a better family than the one he got. Story 3: What a nightmare. Whether she knows it or not, OP's sister is basically holding herself hostage in order to hijack OP's wedding for her "big reveal." Because it's a wedding, people will feel obligated to at least attempt to keep their feelings in check, and the two will probably take their silence as approval. And you know what? Since these two have absolutely no sense at all, I'm willing to bet money that a proposal will be made, too. I really hope OP sticks to her guns. I feel bad that she feels trapped in this situation. She cares way more about her sister than her sister does about her, or possibly anyone. But none of this is okay, and her sister is old enough that she can get out if she really wants to.

Story 2 - if OP is in the US, dad is taking her for a ride. Kidneys are the only thing in the US we have universal healthcare for, unless they're doing constant experimental treatment, dad's not in near the amount of debt he's making it out to be.
@rebelks88 Жыл бұрын
Or it’s not actually medical debt 🤔
@gmun2248 Жыл бұрын
I don't know specifically about kidneys, but I do know that there can be charges for experimental treatments, usually at a safe stage but not technically through FDA approval (or whatever is required for procedures) yet. I had an experimental surgery. HOWEVER, this made me a "self pay patient" & my primary dr explained exactly what I should say to get maximum discounts. Basically, hospitals don't have to pay anyone to chase up insurance companies if the patient pays. If they pay at time of treatment, they don't have to chase up the patient either & give a 25-40% discount off the official self pay price. Additionally, because the awesome system of US Healthcare doesn't actually have fixed prices to discount by 40%, it's all negotiable. I am British. I spent a few years in the US and the easiest explanation is: it was complicated. But I learned how to 'work' the Healthcare system. Legally. Most major hospitals are required to have some form of charity or foundation, and patients who cannot pay can apply for discounts through that. It is related to family income (I was living with family due to the complicated crap, in order to get that legal status, they have to sign responsibility for me - even as an adult). Most hospitals have finance departments that will reduce and reduce and reduce until you are looking at (semi) reasonable prices. For another surgery, I had a quote of $40k upwards at one hospital & $12k total at the surgery centre where I had it done. HUGE difference. There are many ways to help people who need help paying - legal and available from the hospital or the doctor. But if they are only told to go through your insurance company, you won't get that info. Insurance over there is an absolute joke. I should have had insurance for the second one, but they "reviewed" my case with their own "independent doctors" who clearly hadn't been given accurate info & it was basically screw you. It still makes me mad. Also, doesn't St Jude's promise treatment for any child who needs it? And other hospitals, in big cities especially, have similar kids' programs. In my experiences, I have always been helped by amazing doctors, or in one case a 'patient liason' person - people who know the system and have influence. If a doctor won't figure out something (like donating their own time) for a kid who is in such a critical condition, it's time to look for second, third, fourth opinions and find someone who knows how to make things happen. Aside from the shitty healthcare practices, it's a despicable position to put a kid in. Edit: I initially meant OP as the kid in the shitty position. It's also just a terrible system in a wealthy country to put a sick kid in - many sick kids are in that position because there is no universal healthcare/ cap on prices/ universal fair pricing/ system for kids etc etc. Horrible story on every level.

I still wonder just how that came up in conversation ... its also an extra layer of ick since OP is a girl, like was he telling her because he was hoping OP would be into it too? Ugh, gross. This guy is a loser (and not kink shaming anyone, but you don't just tell your girlfriend's family that you like doing kinky stuff).

Story 1: thank goodness OP found out about the friends plan before they left. I used to have a friend who had a weird unspoken mooching plan whenever I visited her where I found myself having to buy meals for her and whoever her boyfriend was at the time in addition to my own meals. We never discussed it but it became a thing where we would brainstorm the cheapest way to make lots of good food and I often payed for stuff that food stamps wouldn't. They were both bigger in frame than I am (all 3 of us are obese so no slight on that front) and I didn't factor into my budget that they tended to eat like twice as much food as me. All I can say is thank goodness for mc donalds having the 20 chicken nuggets for $5 deal. That deal saved me and my wallet several times.

Story 2: How incredibly kind is OPs mom?! Need money for your sick kid? Don't worry about child support. Then later, ADDING her own money to double the amount dad put into OPs college fund...that she's now taken out to return to dad! And smart. Now dad has no leverage, and can make no complaint about moneys he contributed...because he has them all now. While OP can rest guilt free knowing only moms money is covering college and not the money dad needs for little brother.

I'm so glad someone in the comments mentioned that this mysterious not-covered-by-insurance treatment might well be an alternative therapy scam. This is a real risk in cases like this, including people asking for help on gofundme etc. These vultures deliberately pray on desperate people and get them to pay their life savings for nonsense "treatments", and people should make very sure they are not giving their money into supporting these scam artists.

Story one. The creature in question is not a friend, never was. If someone makes no bones about using and abusing your generosity and laughs it off that person has zero respect, affection or regard for you. This thing actually calculated how much she could take advantage of OO, prepared to do so and informed her ahead of time because she was so comfortable in her entitlement.

I was once on the wrong end of this, but an accusation. As my grandma always gave me a few extra bucks to spend on trips with my friends, I thought it would make me seem cool if I paid for a few things for everyone myself, like a round of drinks or a meal... So one of my friend's father said: "Watch out for that one, she burns through her cash in two days and then expects everyone else to pay for her." It was a 100% untrue and it made me feel absolutely awful. A shitty thing to say about a kid, really, when it is nowhere near and never has been true.

Story 2: If you want to add a little drama I think some sleuthing maybe in order, find out who this guys wife is and secretly invite her to it (explain the circumstances) make sure she is onboard with not telling her husband, then allow sister to invite her "boyfriend". Or simply allow them to invite their +1 which will likely be the same guy and watch him squirm trying to get out of this, 100% sure he will find some excuse not to be there if both his wife and mistress are asking him to join him at the same event.

Life saving care is not withheld in the US because a family cannot pay. There are hospitals dedicated to caring for sick kids that are run completely by donation. It’s almost impossible to pay for the care and medications needed after a transplant, Medicare disability comes into play here. Yes, Medicare is available to young people if they are disabled. There is financial assistance available for a sick child. No matter how much OP gives his father, it will NEVER be enough. The wife needs to work, the kids need to go to school, and social services needs to be involved for the health and welfare of that child.

Not true. Some people fall just above the poverty line and can’t get extra help for medical. With kids, there may be more options, but I have know several people who have died due to no insurance and unable to pay. Most hospitals are for profit and don’t offer expensive care for free. In the US the number one reason for bankruptcy is medical debt.
@DameNickum Жыл бұрын
@@quillacranshaw9234 Okay, I’m an RN in california. Anyone who walks into the ER will be treated. It is against the law here to discriminate based on employment or ability to pay. If you fall above the poverty line, but have medical debt, that moves the line. I don’t know where you live, so cannot speak to your situation. Medical debt can be cleared by bankruptcy, where as student loans and Income taxes cannot. Most hospitals will work with you and help you apply for assistance. Private insurance will deny payment for treatments out of coverage, but state and federal health care will pay a portion or all. That said, I never looked at insurance or cared about ability to pay. Though once in a while we were aware of where the cost of care fell. 30 years of working in both ICU and ER, I never saw anyone turned away. My best friend lives out of state, and had recently changed jobs. She was dx with breast cancer. She was terrified about the cost. Not that she wouldn’t get care, but that she might be in debt forever. I started a go fund me campaign for her, and was able to raise a good chunk of money for her. The whole point is that there are other ways to take care of medical cost that are not trying to squeeze it out of a minor child.

#3 - I think the edit tells the whole story; sis wants to use OP's wedding as her big reveal and take focus off of OP - can we say scapegoat and golden child (who apparently gives golden showers)? Yea, OP needs to just tell sis no for many reasons, but mostly to not take focus off the reason for the day in the first place. And EWWW!

Story 3: OP should definitely disinvite her sister from her wedding as her sister WILL cause drama just being there. Either OP let's her sister bring the boyfriend and the entire wedding becomes about the sister as it becomes about introducing the boyfriend and explaining what happened to the old boyfriend and why their father doesn't like the new boyfriend. Or if she holds her ground and lets her sister come, her sister will be bad mouthing her the entire time and doing everything in her power to sabotage the wedding. At least if OP disinvites her sister, she can ask her mother for help with damage control beforehand to make sure that her sister can't turn the family against her. What it really seems to come down to is that the sister is trying to get OP to let her introduce this man at her wedding to show the extended family that even though they are going out because of an ongoing affair, OP has already accepted him and if OP won't go along with it, well, "misery loves company". If the sister goes down, she is going to try to take OP down with her.

I get she's your sister but dude, she'll make your life Hell before she wakes up. She's an adult and she herself needs to face the repercussions of her own actions. Story 3: While I love my brothers, there is no way on the planet I want to hear anything about their sex lives. Big nope. That said, the sister deciding to make the wedding her huge reveal of the boyfriend that she left her other relationship for, that's also not necessarily single, but she loves him is another big nope. I think OP should prepare for her sister to be a no-show at the wedding. Hold her position.

I had a friend how borrowed money several times and it took a few months to pay back each time. But when I wanted to once borrow money because my card didn't work on the ATM at the day long concert. I had wanted to take out money outside the grounds but she and her friend said it was not needed. She didn't want to borrow me any money. Over 12 hours I had nothing to eat or drink. After that I never allowed her to borrow any money ever again, but she kept asking. So that friendship died.

Story 2 - reminds me of the one where OP's dad sold her heirloom ring and the siblings cancer just came back right away and the act itself was proved pointless because now the sibling is still sick and the ring is gone. If OP gave the college fund, that's almost guaranteed 2 futures being ruined. It's sad that Brother is so young and ill but if OP wasn't around and didn't have the college fund THEIR MOTHER PROVIDED, dad would have no other options still. He just sees them as a money bag.
