I was lucky to have seen Doug Kershaw in concert at an all-night bluegrass festival at the University of Montana field house in Missoula. They even served a pancake breakfast in the morning. Kershaw was awesome-came out in a velvet-like suite, threw it off later and mowed through a half dozen bows during the performance.

Grew up to this music and in the same area of La. as Doug did! Best fiddler ever! Love the song, Have heard it by many Cajun singers in local dance halls where I lived in my younger years.

I had an album with this song played and sung by him on it back in the late 60's or early '70's. It is impossible to not be happy when you hear such. As a Texas boy I had never heard such and even seen such before. I think I wore the vinyl off that album at the time, as I played it over and over and over. I saw him on a few tv performances afterwards and he was great and even greater with each and every performance. Nothing at all like the performers of today who generally suck at the stuff they call music these days.

Heading to Mexico one time me and one of my brothers decided to cut down south of New Orleans and run the coast and cajun country toward Sabine pass in Texas. I always heard bs about how cajun people didn't like outsiders and all that crap. We stop about half way at a little convenience store/bar that was built with the bar over the water. We got us a sandwich and a couple of beers and just enjoyed the atmosphere and the music. We were what was then called "long hairs" and 50 yrs. ago we were used to snide comments and looks being from the deepest of the deep south. Those folks weren't nothing but friendly. I wanted to.apply for admittance to cajunhood, but we were on the way to turn the golden keys.

First time I ever saw Doug Kershaw was in 1971 - in this surreal movie called, "Zachariah" . . . kind of a Hippie Art film version of a gunfighter ballad. But all the outlaw "gangs" were bands - like The James Gang, Country Joe & The Fish, etc. - and the storyline was that Zachariah and his best friend became opponents in a gunfight. Zachariah was the fastest gun - and so all the other gunfighters came looking for him to challenge him and win the title for themselves. Doug Kershaw sort of played the part of the Greek Chorus.
