NOTE: This video is not sponsored, I paid for this meal in full. But Barry was able to ensure that he got to cook for us. Thanks Barry!
Tanaka of Tokyo Restaurant
During my visit to Honolulu, Hawaii to visit family I started posting some photos on Instagram. I got a message from Barry, who is a world renowned teppanyaki chef expert - he’s even traveling the world teaching how to cook teppanyaki. So when he asked if I would come in to the restaurant he works at, and he would do the cooking, I knew it would be a great opportunity - not only for the food but for the amazing cooking skill.
Tanaka of Tokyo is Japanese teppanyaki restaurant in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii. There’s an interesting history surrounding teppanyaki - it’s a Japanese meal, although it was invited to cook Western style. Funny thing is, it’s more popular outside of Japan than in Japan, and I’ve never even had it in Japan. So this was my first time to really have a proper teppanyaki meal.
I asked the waitress what she recommended and it was a set that included lobster, steak, and scallops, plus some Hawaiian style poke to begin with.
Our entire teppanyaki meal was extremely entertaining. The food was delicious and very high quality, but the cooking and show was a highlight. Our whole family enjoyed it from the start to finish. Barry is an amazing chef and he has incredible knife and fire skills!
Eating teppanyaki at Tanaka of Tokyo is not a cheap meal, but you not only pay for the food, but for the entire dining show.
Total price - $213.30
Special thanks to Barry for his amazing cooking!

My daughter's 14th birthday was in January so we treated her to a local hibachi style grill at a nice Japanese restaurant in our town. We watched another table before us where the chef was a very experienced older man who told jokes, and was very skilled. He was entertaining to watch. When we were seated, our chef was not experienced. He looked to be about 22 yrs old and was probably the son of one of the staff. He dropped his utensils, and was clumsy in his delivery but we still had a good time and my daughter loved the entire experience. Our chef enjoyed squirting liquid from a bottle into people's mouths at the table. I kept saying that I wished Mark Wiens would do a hibachi video, then a couple of weeks later, this video came out.

For all those who are commenting on the Tab not being picked up by Barry............ Please read below: Barry wrote only come to my Teppanyanki " space" restaurant... Tanaka of tokyo and i will cook for you. Did not mention 'this is my restaurant'. It was mark who read it lound that his restaurant. please do not blame the chef. He was a cheerful guy and i liked him. VIP treatment is all about how you look after your guest. I have seen other Teppanyanki restaurants where the chefs are only cooking and entertaining. Not interacting with the guests. VIP treatment is all about personal attention and listen to your needs, make you feel good. A chef who works in a teppanyanki cannot afford to pick up a tab. I am damn sure if it was his restaurant (1) he would not have cooked, (2) he would not have allowed mark to pay the bill (3) all subscribers and visitors would not have seen the nice cutlery skills of Barry!! I think it was barry who came to Mark Wiens to entertain in lieu of another chef. That itself is a VIP treatment and respecting Marks presence. Remember Mica enjoyed even though he did not eat anything except the tea icecream LOL. :-)

Appreciate the explanation but it's not needed. I don't see how anyone can expect to eat a meal like that , 'on the house'. Even if someone offered that to me I would politely refuse and pay myself. Every once in awhile it's good to get out and splurge a bit in a great atmosphere with your family. An entertaining approach to fine dining and the food cooked superbly. Great video!

Whenever my family visits Oahu we go at least once if not more times to Tanaka’s for dinner, such a treat!!! Loved taking our 4 kids and my parents on their first night, and first time in Hawaii to this lovely place!😃💚‼️

I TRULY want to have this same experience as you did. Hawaii is the only place I want to visit and experience their fine cuisines. Beautiful Islands, wonderful people and great food. I love the cultural mix that they have their and I would love to do ALL things there like the locals. Keep it spicy Mark 🔥🌶🌶🌶🔥
