Mark is on point. Kobe became a well recognized brand probably because its easy to pronounce and remembered by westerners, also by the earthquake in 95, and even perhaps of Kobe Bryant. Matsusaka is generally considered the best beef in Japan by the Japanese. However, there is no much difference between these heavyweights and Miyazaki. Matsusaka and Kobe are very much overpriced due to their brand recognition. Miyazaki (and other brands as well) is the go to beef in Japan,if you really want your value for money. Nevertheless expensive though!

Correction and more info on a couple of things. The Zenkyo Beef Competition that you mention here (Wagyu Olympics) is only held every 5 years. Miyazaki has won the "Prime Mnister's Award" for the last 4 events (20 years now, since every 5 years). This doesn't mean they won the whole event, just that particular award (which is still a first winning 4 times straight). This event doesn't include "tasting", all judging is done by equipment (type of fat, etc. and judges). Lastly, Kobe prefecture hasn't attended this competition since 2007 (maybe even longer). So to imply that Miyazaki beef has beaten Kobe isn't true.
