Mark's Deliciousness guide: on a scale of 0-10 No Head nod = 0 Head nod with "Mhm" = 1-2 Head nod with "Mhhhhhhhhhm!" = 3-4 Head nod with "Mhhhhhhhhhm!" with smile and wide open eyes = 5-6 Head tilt to the right with smile and a "Wow!" = 7-8 Big head tilt to the right and a little to the left with a chuckle and "Oh Wow!" and "that is Blank delicious" = 8-10, which means you have to try that dish even if it's for $1000 :)

What I like about Weins is that he takes effort to travel around Asia and introduce foods that are affordable to common people. Food is his passion, just take a look at this video, he used his hands to eat Nasi Padang, following the custom of the Malays, you can see he loves his job. He is not a food critic, I'm sure he had hits and misses when he's in SG, at most he won't upload those videos, why would he give bad reviews to break someones livelihood? Keep up the good work Mark and Ying, you guys are doing great!!!

I love Nasi Padang! I spent two months traveling through Sumatra, Java and Bali but I came away with a lifetime craving for Nasi Padang. Luckily I live in Los Angeles and there are several good Indonesian restaurants here, some of which serve Padang "style" dishes but it's not the same as the full experience. I keep hoping that one day.... Thank you Mark, as always, for the vicarious thrill.

For those about to visit Singapore for the first time, Mark has just given you a warning. Small time food stalls tend to take their weekly day off on Mondays after the most hectic workday for them (Sunday). Also I hate it that they stopped using leaf make their ketupat. Although they say they use food safe materials to cook the rice in, I can bet you with that 10 to 15 years from now, someone will come up with findings that there are actually chemicals given off from the heat to give you some sort of cancer causing agent.
@BernieLow8 жыл бұрын
+smutpow I cringed when I saw the ketupat packed in plastic. ugh
@xMissEerie7 жыл бұрын
Is it really about safety precautions? I think its really just efficiency and maybe cost saving cos those plastic-wrapped ketupat are factory made. My mum and I called it instant ketupat. I find traditional way of making ketupat a pain. My Dad used to make it. Not every malay men and women know how to make it now.

ohhhh i think he is a great critic ... cos unlike other food critics he gives us the chance to guess how the food is ... if his head swings ... its really good ... if he says ahh its awesome ... its average ... but once he comes out of the restaurant ... he always tells how he felt about the food . he is just very polite ... respects the time tht each people take to prepare the food he eats... Ramsay is not to be compared with him .. thats a different level .. and i love both of them for their criticism in adiff level.

Guys, can we just stop the stupid comments about authenticity?! Singapore is known to be a melting pot of different cultures, that is what makes us unique. Mark already explained in his video that Nasi Padang originated from Indonesia. Can we just accept that somewhere along the way, some Indonesians, or Malaysians came over from Indonesia and Malaysia to Singapore and decided to make Singapore their home? Maybe they missed their hometown food, so they cooked it and decided "Hey, why not sell my hometown food to the people here!" But they had to tweak their recipes due to different tastebuds in Singapore, or maybe they couldn't find the exact ingredients in Singapore and found a different one and Singaporeans liked it so they kept it and they passed the recipe on to their children. It's called adapting.

Mark, you should fly by to Medan! It's just over and hour flight from Singapore and about two hours from Jakarta! When you do, try our Mie Pansit (Wanton Noodles) and a lot more of glorious cuisines in which you can taste most of them in Selat Panjang and Semarang Street at nighttime.

Hey Mark, glad to see you're enjoying your trip in Singapore. By the way, that rice cake in the green plastic is actually called 'ketupat'. It's very popular to be served with satay and during the Muslim celebration of 'Hari Raya'. Originally, they are cooked in coconut leaves woven into a diamond shaped little bag. That really adds flavour to it. The plastic diamond shaped bags are more for mass production and convenience. Just thought you shd know. :)
@arivanuaranu8 жыл бұрын
Not saying that it's wrong, but please let me add to that very Malaysian/Singaporean POV. The rice cake has many names in Indonesia & Southern Philippines, depends on the locality. It is served with many types of food, not just satay. It is also served in various festive occassions. In Indonesia you will see it on Eid, Christmas, Hindu holidays, & even Chinese New Year.
