I agree with your statement of the "outdoor" tool... That coating should be more durable... The marine coat would be my choice...not as tactical cool, but more durable... It is very nice that options for upgrades are readily available for both to customize for personal taste.

I agree as well. There’s a place for shiny bluing and pretty wood, but that’s not what these rifles are.

I use microcrystalline wax on mine (outer surface). Renaissance or E.J. Wheaton. It's made for the purpose. Cleans off superficial rust and protects from moisture. Invisible and not tacky to the touch. Protects wood, too. But otherwise agreed, I'd prefer stainless or marine for this type of tool.

Re: rust on the Henry. Yes, I kinda hate that they're using blued steel vs. stainless or some type of nitride finish on an outdoorsy gun, at least with polymer stock, but it is what it is. I use E.J. Wheaton Microcrystalline Wax, (same thing as the Renaissance wax) on both of mine - Henry side gate 45-70 with walnut furniture (not threaded) and the identical X. The wax protects wood and metal, cleans off superficial rust. I've been in the rain with the walnut one. It's fine. Larry Potterfield of Midway has a nice demo video of Renaissance wax. I use it on everything now.

**I still think a slide action Remington 7600 rechambered for 45-70 with a 10-round magazine and a 16 inch barrel (you could also do recoil reducing stocks) would be better than an levergun. And you wouldn't have to break your firing hand grip to cycle the action. **The lever guns tend to be too expensive for what they are. **Although if a shotgun can feed off of two tubes the Kel-Tec and the Smith & Wesson and it's Fore-runner the Neostead. **Why can't somebody do that with a lever gun?
@hillbillyscholar812627 күн бұрын
I am no Remington historian but I do not think any of the Remington slide action rifles were originally chambered in a cartridge that would lend itself to a .45-70 conversion. The box magazine would be an entirely different matter even if the rifle could be converted, which is not possible as far as I know. Certain bolt, lever and single shots are the options that have a measure of economy and make sense at present.
@kirkchartier714126 күн бұрын
@hillbillyscholar8126 yes originally it was chambered in .243 .270 .308 and 30 06 I believe, **Remington really missed the boat in not trying to make them patrol rifles, with the majority of the commonality with that in the Remington 870 back in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s before the AR become so prevalent. **They will probably have to change the magazine a little bit and make it more of a forward slanted magazine ( like the Ruger PC) rather than a straight feed to keep the cartridges from rim locking.
@Sausketo24 күн бұрын
Ive thought about that idea, like if i was a gunsmith how could i make a double tube action work with a side loading gate, something like side by side tubes, left loads first then right, then the action feeds from the right tube until its empty then feeds from the left tube, would be nice to have 8+1 instead of 4+1
@kirkchartier714124 күн бұрын
@@Sausketo yes great minds think alike, better to have doubled the rounds, in roughly the same size. **Kel-Tec, S&W, and Neostead have already worked out the problems, it's just a matter of adapting it to a smaller cartridge. **It would also make the Henry Axe actually worthwhile if it had the dual tube feeds. Otherwise you can get a Taurus revolver for cheaper and easier to reload, shoot (no need to work the lever to get a shell to shoot just pull the trigger). **The only plus to the axe is longer barrel, slightly more velocity. **And while they can put dual loading ports on the R&L sides To make it look somewhat like its predecessor. **They can also put the loading gates on the bottom of the receiver.
@mtower23526 күн бұрын
The Henry has a trigger bar safety on the hammer. The tube is great for unloading. I like the Marlin buttstock but the action isn’t as smooth which shouldn’t be with modern technology. I just don’t know which one I like better.

I have the identical Henry X 45-70 and a walnut stocked Henry Side Gate 45-70 (not threaded). Both are far more accurate than shown in this video, but I mainly use Hornady Leverevolution 325gr - my deer cartridge. Scopes are zeroed for it (having magnification might be part of it). I've fired other loads, including +P, but did not pay attention to precision. I guess you could say that I got those two for the price of a Marlin (got'em both at great prices). If not for Henry, I probably wouldn't own a 45-70, just too expensive.

Can't go wrong IMO... But I'd definitely go with the Ruger MFG Marlin, but I'd go Guide gun. The velocity gain of the bit of extra barrel makes me feel better (even if it doesn't make a difference in the real world) plus... these guns are too busy for me. For a lever gun I want a wood stock and it to be as sleek & simple as possible... if you want a magnified scope, get a bolt gun. I wish they still made a walnut stocked, blued Marlin with a 20"-22" barrel. I'd run Buffalo Bore 300gr JHP for deer & 430gr Underwood +P FP for everything else
@AlaskanBallistics26 күн бұрын
It's not the magnified scope we want, it's red dots, lasers and lights. All faster than a peep sight. Slick wood will get scratched; might as well have a working man's gun, not a show safe queen.
@languagesource35510 күн бұрын
Why? Scopes have been put on lever guns for as long as lever guns existed. It just depends on the purpose. I certainly like the slick cowboy guns in revolver calibers and the Model 94, and the guide guns with irons. I have RDS on some of them and irons on others. And I have LPVO on my two 45-70 Henrys, for deer. LPVO's are awesome on lever actions. Walk with 1x for quick acquisition. Zoom in for the shot when in position. Wouldn't be my choice for bear, but I don't live in bear country.

I declare my CCH Henry the winner...for me anyway.😉 Both rifles are interesting but ultimately neither is for me. I understand why people gravitate toward them but my Marlin 1895 kicks plenty hard enough in standard configuration. My Henry is far more pleasant with heavier loads. The low hits from the Extreme Penetrator could be due to barrel time if the rifle had been sighted with a significantly heavier projectile that is moving at 1700 fps. or so. Thanks for sharing!👍🙏❤

457 WWG Magnum is what you want. It still shoots 4570 and 410 2 3/4" but the 457 Magnum is much more powerful, it ain't no joke. Sterling has used ones regularly they are always in the wood case with two glass doors by the front register. You don't have to get the "takedown guides choice co-pilot" just wait till you see a non-takedown used they are much more reasonably priced used. This is the best place in the world to find a used rifle from Wild West on the cheap "under 2g" on consignment at gun shop. One question is that "maudRD"?
