MOIN AHSAN JAZBI
Moin Ahsan Jazbi, a luminary of the Progressive Writers Movement, carved a distinct niche for himself by seamlessly blending classical literary traditions with contemporary poetics. Unlike many of his contemporaries who viewed poetry as a vehicle for ideological propagation, Jazbi believed in crafting verses of enduring aesthetic and thematic value, resonating with timelessness and depth.
Born on August 21, 1912, in Mubarakpur, Azamgarh, Jazbi displayed an early inclination toward poetry, composing his first verses at the tender age of nine. His literary journey was nurtured by luminaries such as Fani Badayuni and Hamid Shahjehanpuri, whose mentorship refined his poetic sensibilities. Jazbi’s academic pursuits led him to St. John’s College, Agra, where he completed his Intermediate in 1931, followed by a B.A. from Anglo-Arabic College. His intellectual world expanded further in Lucknow, where he engaged with progressive thinkers like Sardar Jafri and Sibte Hasan, shaping his worldview and aligning him with the Progressive Writers Movement.
Jazbi’s association with Aligarh Muslim University marked a significant phase in his life. After earning his M.A. and later his Ph.D. for the critical work *Hali ka Siyaasi Shuoor*, he joined the Urdu department as a faculty member, dedicating his career to academia and literature. His poetic oeuvre, encompassing collections such as *Farozaan*, *Sukhan Mukhtasar*, and *Gudaaz-e-Shab*, reflects his mastery over themes of human emotion, existential musings, and cultural reflection.
Jazbi’s legacy as a poet lies in his ability to marry tradition with innovation, creating a body of work that transcends the confines of time. He passed away on February 13, 2005, leaving behind a rich tapestry of literary contributions that continue to inspire and resonate with readers and scholars alike.

marne kī duā.eñ kyuuñ māñgūñ jiine kī tamannā kaun kare
ye duniyā ho yā vo duniyā ab ḳhvāhish-e-duniyā kaun kare
jab kashtī sābit-o-sālim thī sāhil kī tamannā kis ko thī
ab aisī shikasta kashtī par sāhil kī tamannā kaun kare
jo aag lagā.ī thī tum ne us ko to bujhāyā ashkoñ ne
jo ashkoñ ne bhaḌkā.ī hai us aag ko ThanDā kaun kare
duniyā ne hameñ chhoḌā 'jazbī' ham chhoḌ na deñ kyuuñ duniyā ko
