By 1870, the people were already pretty fed up with this poor excuse of a Napoleon, and Napoleon III took Bismarck's bait as a kind of last hope to save what little power he already had. Fredrick III was so easily influenced that he kinda just gave up on running Prussia, and Bismarck was pretty much the one pulling all the strings. He knew the public opinion in both Prussia and France, and to try and unify the rest of the Germanic peoples, he altered the Ems telegram to make it look like the other country was aggressive to whichever side read it. Very smart, and in the end Bismarck got his way. Too bad for him, because us baguettes managed to hold you back in WW1. (We don't talk about WW2)

My family a few generations back were Prussian, a great-grandmother was from East Prussia, which became part of Poland after 1918 and the Versailles Treaty. This tune reminds me that my family came from honourable Prussian stock, that my ancestors fought in WWI out of nationalistic pride. Then that mongrel Austrian Hitler and his Nazi thugs came onto the scene and the rest is history, had ancestors fight for Germany in WWII as well. I'm not ashamed of them at all, there were no Nazi Party members or Waffen SS types in my family. They were soldiers and did their duty as any soldier must do.

This brings me joy everytime I hear it. It's very nostalgic and I still love hearing this on every Schützenfest I attend. The march is often played on Schützenfeste, you could call it a type of festival where usually the local association of marksmen/sharpshooting club (Schützenverein) celebrate with alot of beer (obviously) and shooting down a wooden bird to determine the club's "Schützenkönig" ("King" of the club) until next year's festival. This is usually played during marches. Usually when the king and queen march along/are introduced. Schützenfeste are rooted in the traditions of millitary celebrations, which is why marches such as this one are often played.
