I’ve been playing Marshall 2203 and 2204 amps since 1978. My first Marshall was a fawn 50 watt. Later I got a 100 watt JCM 800. I bought a reissue JCM 800 2203 and I think it sounds as good if not better than the oneI bought in the 80’s.

Yes sir! A "proper" Marshall tone! Hey try utilizing a "room" mic as well as a close mic with a 60/40 mix; the higher percentage to the close mic. It really does make it sound more awesome 👌

Boy! Master Volume only on 3? No wonder that it doesn’t sound as it should in the video. The real magic starts around 6, then this is about the greatest amp in the world. You can still use an attenuator if it’s too loud.

Black White Well, depends on how high you set the gain. But yes, with Gain AND Master both higher than 7 the compression can be too muddy. Master between 6 and 7 and Gain a little bit higher is my personal sweet spot.

I love that sound, but the guy doing the demo makes it look easy. That amp requires you to really dig into the strings and have your rhythm game really together. When you do: it really rewards you. While you're not there yet: I'd go for an amp that's easier to play to cut my teeth first.

It's a damn fine amp, but, in my opinion, lacks the dynamics of the original. If you're in the market, be sure to check out the PAL 800 pedal. Sounds like a JCM800 and paired with a Fender Princeton '68 gives you the Fender cleans to boot.

I don't understand. I bought a s/h master vol Marshall head in 1979 and I don't ever remember it having 'JCM800' on the front or back panel anywhere....in fact I don't recall the front panel being full width. Have you morphed two models together here or what?

Just had a squint at what I can see from old gig pics from '79/'80 - Definitely not full width panel but rocker switches. When I bought the amp second hand in Denmark Street the guy told me it had belonged to John Myles who had it modded with 4 (as I recall) speaker out jacks. I only ever used it with one Hiwatt 4x12. I hadn't thought about this amp for years (I sold it in 1982ish to fund a holiday in Egypt at the end of that year. I've just been stoking the fires of memory on the SoloDallas vintage Marshall website. It is all most interesting but to be brutally honest I doubt I could pick that amp up today with my back in its current state...Hahahahahahaha. Time passes eh?

Actually it was a limited run, and all of them are sold! It surely lacks an effects loops, but as you probably know it was made to Kerry specs, and many users don't rely on fx loop as they prefer to run front pedals. I find the amp to have extra clarity and oomph due to 4 KT88, also the beast section with the noise gate is really awesome, at least for me. I realized I don't need uber hyper gobs of distortion to play for example Deicide, Sepultura, Pantera...for me it's all about clear, tight gain with midrange. The KK2203 delivers ! Of course it could be nice to be able to turn on and off the beast section via a footswitch.
@anahowana
@anahowana 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I understand the issue with the clean and gain mode, you have always to go back to the amp and turn the knobs in order to get a clean or a high gain tone. I'm a set it for once and play type of player, but for those who want to have say three sounds on the fly: clean, rythm and lead for sloing, then they have to get something else. But the idea of single channel hot rodded Marshall amp is the selling point for me. Also the cleans are really great, chimey and bell like. My splittable dirty fingers pups are in for something.

Yes. Low is clean. High on dirty . Not much distortion at all at very low volume. It has to be loud to get a good sound. Use a boss SD1 overdrive to get more gain. In dirty channel.

The real question is why does a 1200$ amp cost 3350? It sounds ok but only has one sound and for that price I could buy a mesa markv35 which is 100x more versatile and better sounding with 1500 left over.

I have a bunch of high end amps, and recently picked up a 1981 early 80s 800....a "holy grail" amp. Being honest, while it has some great tones, it is striking how little it does being one channel and not real high gain. It's a one trick pony, though that one trick sounds very nice. It's true recent amps do so much more for less money. The 800 sounds "good" for the heavy crunch tone, but does little else. My 3 channel Legacy 3 or 12 channel JVM410 for example run circles around the 800. Your comment is very true that amps of recent years give you so much more versatility, and many more sounds. I will keep my 1981 JCM800 for value and resale, but it's a one trick pony for sure.

I have watched other videos showing that Marshall switched to a Vietnamese manufactured power transformer in 2023 which can emit a 1 k hum from its metal cap enclosure when powered up. Why would Marshall, in it's flagship model, cut corners on parts quality while maintaining the same very premium price point as the previous models with paired transformers that were manufactured in Britain or Malta? It makes no sense other than Marshall is now putting profits over their quality control, and are willing to release an inferior product without any savings passed on to the consumer. Had I bought this amp at it's current street price and found out Marshall did this, I would be upset to say the least. kzbin.info/www/bejne/onfYhaqpZbCEqpIsi=NsHmQNh4-g4LFBN5

so that's it...sparkly clean, and overly saturated 80's fluff? I'm sure this amp is capable of some killer in-between sounds. maybe next time you could try setting it to an edge of break up, or a lovely thick crunch as well as the bog-standard guitar shop tones for those of us who don't worship at the altar of bad sound.

@@seanriley9045 Honestly bought one of these reissues before they were 2999.00 first off sounded so bad, I re-biased the amp hotter and changed out the preamp tubes and it sounded better but not like the old ones. I sent it back, it was not worth the money, for something like a single channel amp with not many components, non hand wired etc etc. its not worth it, the tone wasnt there. I have cheap bugeras that sounded better. Your basically paying for the logo JCM800!
