This is the new 2019 Marshall JCM800 Studio Classic 20 (SC-20H) amplifier head. This is a really solid valve amplifier perfect for studio and live use application. The amplifier can be run at full 20 watts or switched down to 5 watts for lower volume use. Even at lower volumes, this amplifier is quite loud. In this video review of the Marshall JCM800 Studio Classic, I am using the Marshall MX212 speaker cabinet loaded with 2 x Celestion Seventy 80 speakers.

I LOVE this amp. After years of using the likes of Mesa Boogie and a PRS MT15, it was a little brighter than what I was used to, but after a bit of tweaking, it's an AMAZING amp. It was only after I owned a Marshall when I realised those amps don't have that much gain and you kinda have to be a better player to use them well. Boost it with a decent overdrive and it absolutely sings! One thing to bear in mind is that Floyd Rose guitars can sound quite shrill through this amp, even with the presence and treble dialled way back, and noticed a decrease in distortion compared to another guitar with a stoptail bridge and a similar pickup. So I would advise maybe putting a brass block in the Floyd and choosing your pickup wisely in order for it to not sound that way. An Alnico Nailbomb by Bare Knuckle Pickup works really well in this case. Boosts the input as well as the midrange for more gain without sounding harsh.

I use it in my bedroom all the time. I have no problem whatsoever turning it down to "bedroom levels". It sill sounds fantastic too. I have the head version and run it through a Marshall 2x12 cabinet. I love the amp sooooooo much. I really don't need or want anything else. IT IS THAT GOOD. Especially with a Gibson Les Paul. I wouldn't do a straight trade for any boutique amp EVER. When you have the best, why mess with the rest?

For anyone wondering this is a great “live/gigging” amp. It’s very bright as you can tell from this video but, having said that it works great in a live setting. Because you’re not fighting the bass players frequency and you’re cutting through the mix. It’s also extremely touch sensitive. I run a AC booster and or a morning glory in the front and ride my volume on my baja tele and I can get anywhere from heavy overdriven rhythm to sparkly/spanking country twang. It’s definitely an amp that you need to dial in but totally worth the time. Also to note I run the head into a 2x12 vertical cab with two celestion 70/80 speakers.

@@spada60 you are right. But ever since I got an all tube amp. I use an overdrive or a distortion pedal more like a volume boost for my main tone. Kinda like Stevie Ray Vaughan did with his tube screamer. I do use an overdrive for more gain and what not, and doing a clean boost is just what I am liking right now. That's why I like love playing guitar so much. There is a millions ways to get a tone and everyone has there own way

Great review, great tones. The Seventy 80s are fairly neutral sounding so you get a good idea of what the actual amp sounds like. I've found they seem to break up a little earlier than V30s or G12T 75. Be interesting to hear whether an attenuator would successfully tame it down a bit, or just ruin the tone.

This video really demonstrated how a darn good musician can compensate for bad guitar pickups. In my humble opinion, there is no reason to keep ceramic pickups in the Mexico Standard Strat. Get rid of those 70/80 Celestions and I'll bet that amp would sound a LOT better/less harsh in the high end. Play it through some V30s or Greenbacks. But overall the 70/80 are a pretty crappy speaker. Most DSL40 owners I know, swap that speaker out right away for a V30 or a Greenback and are blown away at the difference in improvement.

wondering this myself... dsl40CR is 999 canadian dollars, the combo amp version of this one, sc20c is 1699. dsl seems way more versatile but I cant help wonder does the sc20c sound 700 dollars better or not...

Do yourself a favour and have a go on the SV20H, the mini Plexi. It's incredible.

I loved this amp so much. Then my friend bought an egnater tweaker 15 combo. He then proceeded to get my favourite sc20 tone and could get it even more touch sensitive at lower levels. I then sold my sc20 and bought an egnater tweaker 15 combo and spent the remaining change on a second hand shotgun and blew the prick away.
