I love your reviews. As an owner of Origin 50H, I can definitely confirm it is loud as f$%k and has far more volume than I will ever need. However, it has a power reduction switch which really does a great job so the amp can be pushed hard at lower volumes. Personally, I think the Origin 50H is a great amp that provides far more in terms of sound than what is worth for its price tag. To have a full-sized EL34 head with effects loop and Marshall label under 600 euros is a case that is very difficult to beat. However, in reviews, I think there is a big injustice made to these amps because they are often perceived as a "poor man's plexi" and somewhat expected to perform as 2000 $+ boutique Marshall heads and are judged through these lenses. I think it is fair to say that Origin is Origin and Plexi is a Plexi. Origin has its own thing going and is a Marshall amp on its own...nowhere did Marshall officially state that this is budget plexi or made comparisons like that. It should be valued for what it is and not for what it is perceived it could or should be. Just my 2 cents. Great review as always, Elmo! ;-)

I love my origin 50h. Got rid of the fizz completely with a power cap upgrade, and then swapped preamp tubes for tungsol 12ax7rs and rebiased it to run kt66 power tubes... for only a few bucks, there was a dramatic improvement over the stock version which is already a fantastic ( and super LOUD) amp. Considered a transformer upgrade but I honestly like it exactly how it is now.

@rocknroll1973 It holds it's own. It's a little brighter, tighter gain structure, cleans are decent but hard to beat JTM cleans considering the tweed heritage. Doesn't quite have the depth or harmonic range as the JTM but I also have old glass and vintage spec transformers in the JTM.

@rocknroll1973 When I had it built, my tech added the split cathode and bright cap push/pull, as well as a tube/SS rectifier switch. The later Black Flags were SS rectified and I wanted the other two things to tighten the bass up a bit in order for the amp to cover more ground. What I meant about the vintage spec trannies was that my JTM50 was built as a clone and when sourcing the transformers I found a couple that are built to the old Drake specs. I also got NOS preamp tubes, including a 60's Mullard for V1. The thing just sings!

@rocknroll1973 Speakers are down the line for me. I have a crappy low end 2X12 that gets the job done but I do want some Celestions. The Heritage seem like a good buy, I've also noticed people selling old Celestions online. Saw a pair of early 70's 30Wt that were priced fair. Can't afford them yet though as I am in the middle of buying parts for another plexi build. Right now just using ir's through studio monitors and headphones.

In live performance on big stages, the sound engineer if the amps are going to be at high volumes, he adjusts the volume according to the tone that the guitarist is looking for at a specific volume and places the amps far and away from the stage. in order to be able to make the mix on the stage monitors and the sound that comes out to the public. For that reason I have never had to use my amp at full volume and my 50 head orgin sounds spectacular. and obviously in indor places like clubs ext. you will never need a higher volume than level 5, and even less on a plexi

I believe that dB levels are measured at 3 feet, so if you have your meter twice that distance, as I think you said 2 metres, your volume is a little higher than what you thought. But I guess, loud is loud, and when you're up around 110-120 decibels it doesn't really matter (to our ears anyway).

Elmo, you are a brave brave person sitting that close to a 50 watt Marshall at full volume! Kudos dude! Both amps sound fantastic. The Plexi is a personal favourite of mine (my custom built 69 Plexi is so awesome) and it has that fatness, girth and fullness. To my ears the bass gets a little loose on that amp. The origin is a real surprise. Not as fat sounding, but low end of tighter, and there is more pronounced high freqs which causes that slight fizz. I kinda preferred it for the Malmsteen rhythms - sound3d tighter - lead tones both cool but Plexi takes it for its fullness. Have an awesome day.

Hi Elmo, I bought an Origin 50h. I've owned just about every classic Marshall model worth owning, and I noticed that fizziness too, but I figured out how to get rid of that. The origin seems to work much more like a plexi if you drive the back end a little harder than the front. Also the tone controls are alot more sensitive, and have more range that a plexi. So here is my formula- Master- 9 Presence-1 Treble- 3 Middle -3 Bass-3 Preamp-8 Tilt- 6 Boost- off It is also worth mentioning that the Powerstream power scaling works great. Those setting work great across all power settings. Also the cabinets I'm using are a Marshall 1960AHW, and a Marshall 425B Vintage/ Modern.

Hi Elmo, here is an update on my Origin 50h. I had it for less than 45 days, and smoked the output transformer! Luckily I had 4 days left to return it. The budget plexi to go with is the Bugera 1960 Infinium. I've owned one for several years, and never had any issues. Also it is without a dought one of the best sounding, feature rich amps I have ever owned regardless of cost! My only recommendation with the 1960 is make sure your speakers can handle the power. 150 watts RMS is a conservative rating. It is louder than my Major!

The Origin 50 is in between a jmp and a jcm800 and a plexi ... it has sounds and tones similar to all those but also its own thing ... people have the bad habit of expecting cork sniffer tones out of cheap amps ... there is a reason some amp sell for 3000$ US and some others 500$, its all about expectation and how much premade ideas are worth. Tone chasing is a sickness and we all know it, some people are more sick than others and convince themselves that shelling out thousands of dollars is always better and justified.

So, basically... The origin is kinda like Plexi sound and the DSL is more like a JCM800? Is that it?
@MrPolevaulter
@MrPolevaulter 4 жыл бұрын
Well partly, but not exactly. The DSL is more it's own thing, whereas the Origin kind of aims to be a Plexi type thing. That's basically the way I've understood it.

Great review Elmo I like the origin 50 but I think i would go for the 1987x its just a better amp .I have a jvm 205 h 50 watt head that sounds pretty damn good but nothing sounds like a plexi to me except a plexi . I can hear the difference in the mid range snarl . For the money and at lower volume the origin would do . But for giggin I would go with the 1987x

On full volume the Origin starts acting like it doesn't like life all that much. I'd say you don't need to have it full blast most of the time, unless you're doing outdoor shows on big stages. 20W should be enough imo, unless you have a drummer who beats the living daylights out of his drums.

I think the harsh and fizzy thing you’ve heard with the origin is related to the stock tubes which I assume you’ve used in this video? The EL34 are ok, but the preamp tubes need to be swapped immediately for something smoother and stable. I like an all JJ Preamp, because even with loads of gain they stay tight and fat.

Hey Elmo, great video and awesome playing! Thinking about getting an Origin 50, looking for that Plexi thing , pushing power amps versus high gain pre amp, and hoping to ad it alongside my DSL100HR. Does the do that and is it a keeper for you? I found the DSL od 1 and 2 channels unable to handle the Malmsteen overdrive with a Malmsteen strat like you experienced in the DSL 20 video. How does the Origin react? Thank you!
