ok heres the story to this post. My brother was at this show. He and his friends drove 8hrs through a snow storm to get to the jam from St. Louis. they didn't have tickets but talked to the road crew and they let them in. its classic. i remember being five years old and loving Caballo Diablo. I posted this for u Rick. You showed me what music is supposed to be.

Toy's heart was broken when Tommy left him. They started playing together, Toy was 9, Tommy 7 and that came in an interview from Tommy himself. Tommy was the heart of that band. I won't leave an opinion of what is MTB today.

Damn I miss the 70’s! I literally burned up Marshall Tucker Band 8 track tapes! Both the Caldwell brothers played with their thumbs instead of picks, it was amazing the sound Toy could squeeze out of that Les Paul!
@jackmomma7481
@jackmomma7481 3 жыл бұрын
Funny you mention how they both played using their thumbs, but especially Tommy. I watched an interview recently where Geddy Lee from RUSH talks about why thumb rests were originally placed at the bottom half of the pickguard, and not at the top above the E stringm which woukd seem like the more logical place for one... Hd said in the early days of bass guitar, bass players would commonly play using a style that incorporated the use of their thumb, rather thsn their fingers. They would then grab onto the thumb rest using their index, middle, and ring fingers for stability and leverage. Bridge systems were even equipped with foam pads that could be raised to mute each string, and helped facilitate that style of bass guitar playing, which I believe he said originated from the south consistent with tyat sort of rockabilly and country "twang" style... Perhaps, it's that exact style of playing is where Tommy's roots lie? It's an interesting theory and does make sense, anyways

Aah 8-Tracks. The 70's. I had a MTB 8-Track die in the car I remember. Excessive heat was not good in the car for those tapes in the Summer. I think that one was respliced a few times. Remember you could do that to them? Well, the player ate the tape & I couldn't rescue it. I kept pulling strand after strand out. The window was half down & the wind just blew the 8-Track right out of my hand sending it down the road bouncing still with tape unraveling until the end. Such an inglorious ending for such a fine tape.

Toy Caldwell was such a great guitarist. Way under rated. Saw the Marshall Tucker band many times in the 70's.

I have been in many award winning bands over the years and have always covered this song. It's a great tune that you can stretch out on the leads. Hail to the Tucker boy's . In fact our band played it this past weekend at a old hippie party. Great song!!!!!and i'm from Missouri

Man I just love how Toy plays! That thumb picking. Like the best jazz player ever. Wes Montgomery oh and Jeff beck. Toy was one of the best in my eyes.

Awesome! There is such a void in music today since Southern Rock stopped getting air play. Such a great genre of music that only lives on because it has been passed down from sibling to sibling or parent to child. Good stuff. From an new Outlaws tune "There's a whole new generation to carry on our battle cry". Keep the music alive and share it with your kids.

Toy and Tommy practically standing on top of one another, the way true brothers do, just raking it. Tommy couldn't have been more solid in backing his big brother and driving the band. It's always seemed to me that Tommy's and Timmy's deaths in 1980 killed Toy inside, and the band died then as well.

Toy wasn't the same. Been front row looking straight up in their faces when they were playing. They loved playing together. The MTB was over when Tommy passed. The heart was gone.
