Thanks, My Friend but it was a joke :) I actually saw this Album debuted @ Earls Court, West London in 1973 with 18,000 others and though it was an indoor arena there, somehow, got a plane, to fly overhead as I recall. Ticket Price for that memorable Concert from 48 years ago? £1 or $1.34....LOL

French composer Claude Debussy was right when he said: “Music is the space between the notes.” The long introduction of this song allows us to prepare for the deep message that will follow. Time runs out inexorably, and nothing can be done about it. The guitar solo in the middle of the song, allows us to become aware of the two previous lines of lyrics which are: (And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. - No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.)

Great job, Marsha! Congrats on experiencing the world of Pink Floyd - most unique and best band ever! Great job utilizing the headphones! Would also suggest using lyric videos (and please, not the 'fan made" videos), so you can absorb the meaning better, Floyd is not the "i'm in love" or "I just lost my girlfriend" kind of band, their lyrics (as here, some 50 years later) are relevant to life.

You have no idea how much production work is on that album. Think about those years there were no digital samplers or computers. All the sound effects (chimes, cash registers, etc.) have been recorded by microphones on magnetic tape, then cut out and pasted in sync with the music ... A freaky job!. Absolute crazy!. If they add creativity and genius to that, we get a jewel called The Dark Side Of The Moon. Cheers.

When you eventually listen to this song again, make sure you have the lyrics on hand. The meaning of the words to this song are hard-hitting and profound to an astonishing extent and should not be understated. I was disappointed that you didn't have the lyrics here. I could tell by the lack of comments that the meaning was lost on you and that's a shame. However, as you will soon see, lyrics on hand for the next song you're about to check out "Great Gig In the Sky" are completely unnecessary. No, it's not an instrumental. It is a vocal song. BOY is it a vocal song, but you won't need lyrics, trust me. The gut-wrenchingly amazing vocal behind GGITS is the British phenomena Clare Torry. I don't know why she wasn't more popular or had a more prominent career of her own. She was phenomenal in her day and sadly that is the only time The Floyd ever worked with her, although Roger Waters(the bass player and usually - but not always - the lyricist) did some concerts with her in the 80s.

Okay, some explaining. Headphones are necessary because Pink Floyd made sure each note was the exact volume it needed to be to every other note being played. And half of them will not be heard without headphones. The reason most of Pink Floyd's albums need to be listened to from first to last track is because each album tells a story. When you listen to a song, it is like reading a random page of a book. It could be interesting, but you can not understand the relationship to the rest of the book. Or album. If you watch Pink Floyd live, please keep your eyes open. They do NOT dance around or anything, because they do not want to distract you from the light/props production. I have seen them twice in concert, and they pay as much attention to detail to their shows as they did with their albums.
