Back again with another one that's pretty far out there. Hopefully these RPG Maker videos continue to be interesting, it's a lot of fun to dig these up and learn about a totally new development scene that happened on the other side of the world. Check the description for chapters, music used, links, and a couple of search terms if you want to click random stuff and potentially find a game yourself.

Very early in the video but a fun fact about lovecraft and japans love for the genre; the Tabletop RPG that blew up wasn’t DnD but rather Call of Cthulhu. CoC was basically the poster boy of TTRPGs over there and still has a decent audience to this day. This carried over to a lot of games, one of the early examples being Laplace no Ma which takes a lot of inspiration from the system.

An extremely niche game I found out about from a friend was black souls. The game is an 18+ eroge (You can also just turn off the nsfw content if you mainly wish to enjoy the story which was what I did) that uses its age rating to handle topics I don't really even see covered by more actual bigger games. The series as a whole is kinda like berserk in a sense in which it's adult topics aren't really for the faint of heart. The first game is actually kinda dogshit in comparison to the second game. So I'd recommend only playing it in order to rush through to the second game (you'd mainly wanna get ending C and Ending D) Black Souls 2 definitely was some life changing shit for me. Never in my entire life did I ever expect an h-game to ever make me wish to sit down and contemplate the meaning behind humanity's grander goal and ambitions and how escaping the chains of fate would ultimately be a better idea then let things take their own course in the world (Oh and Also Alice) The second game also has some crazy mechanics like shotgun locking and rings that increase your actions in a turn (These stack and are pretty needed by the end of the game) That keeps the combat for me really fun and entertaining. You can also change your weapon mid combat so if you'd want to combo and stack different weapon abilities you're free too. (Just don't forget about Alice while you're slaying monsters) Overall, I never thought I'd enjoy such a game. Obviously it's not for kids, but I think that honestly the game gets such a bad wrap from the surface of it when most of that content is avoidable and it actually kinda plays into itself in a way that makes me feel emotions I haven't felt in actual decades.

Leaving the doctors' office and not covering up tracks results in the Doc going off going monster mode, dragged the protag into the darkness. And 3. Not getting the machete in time while the Doctor hunts you down & guts you.. Apologies into going deep but this what I have noticed in Nehan 2 via translation..

Yeah. I remember hearing about Japan's issues with dismemberment and gorey deaths. I kinda find that super fascinating. When I was still a teen, I remember hearing about how differently Japan handled sexual content in media. As a dumb, horny, high school nerd, it made me super jealous. Like, here I am, desperate to see some cleavage like the idiot teen I was, while Japan is over there inserting as many beach trips and hot springs scenes into very show and manga they're making. Japan just seemed like this land where anything goes. Of course, then I learned how that wasn't even remotely the case once I got into college and started studying subjects like world cultures and psychology. I dunno. I'm kind of a simple man. I just find it fascinating how two different cultures from two different developed nation can look at the same thing in a totally different light. Makes me wonder what differences in the development of Japan's culture and my own led to this outcome.

Oh hell yeah, let's go to Nirvana. And since it's the third one, I think I can freely chant "one of us - one of us" XD So, Nehan's basically another case of Yume Nikki then, except this one didn't have other english-language websites and boards pick it up. And shit, my man Yog-Sothoth programmed it? No wonder he was so frustrated and need to unload to the point he spawned a son that went on to destroy the universe with giant robots in 2003, 2004 and twice in 2006. It's interesting how this one is still in the "raw phase" so to speak, being closer to the nitty-gritty home-made grease of the indie games at the time so to speak, not just for RPGMaker but from Japan in general. Definitely has that "official early Touhou" vibe so to speak, like there's a really huge idea and someone's gotta have to break things here and there to succeed, compared to the more profesional P-e-H, with people who knew much better what they were doing, even if they were indie. And indeed, Linda Cubed is brought to mind but there were one or two SNES horror-themed games that kinda used this weird, non-chibi look for the overworld to my recollection. It's definitely not a coincidence. On the subject of the ratings and sensitivities in Japan, indeed, dismemberment is quite controversial to be depicted in media, that's why horror and grindhouse movies, especially the violent ones, go full on constantly gore-filled dimsmemberment and decapitions as a way to show how much not for kids they are. More than dimsemberment, decapitations are a no-no and the Ninja Gaiden series has found itself in hot water many times due to that; veterans remember the "Purple Mist" of NGSigma2. In recent years, it's been even more covered up, now even censoring games in Japan like RE7 even when it gets Z ratings. The style reminds me of some earlier horror manga, like those published in the Garo collections, where they were disturbing with that kind of artwork and these kinds of stories, the style. They were quite Lovecraftian in a sense but mostly because that's the distorted idea the japanese had for western horror at the time, not recognising how much of a mesh of genres of horror their depictions was. A very interesting set of stories for sure. It's kind of insane seeing this, knowing it's from around 2003 and then see RE7 and Amnesia of all things using some of the ideas first shown here, with the teams not knowing anything about each other. Sometimes, a small creator is indeed years ahead of the game. All right, time for some additional tidbits : A wrestler of all things, who smokes, trapped in a Lovecraftian prison? Either it's the wackiest of Antonio Inoki's misadventures, or we're about to witness Juushin Liger's extracuricular activities outside of wrestling and inbetween being a giant mecha fighting against said indescibable monstrosities. 00:18:06 - Oh wow, I didn't know Demon "Kaka" Kogure made a surprise cameo during his tour for Seikama-II, nice. 00:28:35 - IN THE FIRST FLOOR OF DEADALUS TOWER IN MICON CITY- you get the joke 00:39:23 - Oh shoot, Scissorman from Clock Tower makes an appearance as well? Darn, we're burning those horror cameos really fast. 00:54:40 - Ah, I see Sandlot worked on this game apart from Human Entertainment and Nudemaker. Just like Earth Defence Force 6, perfect XD Not to mention "Darkness Fantasy"; good of Kazushi Hagiwara to come as a heavy metal consultant for catchy metal titles, that bastard XD 00:59:18 - I see you know of those tropes and inside jokes as well, nice. 01:23:15 - Oh, nice of HP Lovecraft to show up, as played by Christopher Heyerdahl. Is he going to tell you how he's essentially, a static, contemplative and objective person. Almost a hermit in daily life.

More RPGMaker Horror goodness? Hell yeah, that's what I'm into. In a way, RPGMaker could be compared to Doom, since both Doom and RPGMaker have been used to create all kinds of bold and interesting experiences across 30 years, with no signs of stopping. Doom is eternal, and so too is RPGMaker. Hell, RPGMaker even birthed some relatively high-profile games somewhat recently, namely Omori and Fear & Hunger. (and also Fear & Hunger 2: Termina) While Omori occupies that interstice between traditional Motherlike RPGness, Yume Nikki-esque surreality and classic RPGMaker Horror, Fear & Hunger is more of a full-on dungeon-crawler, embodying the cruelty and brutality of Berserk without that all-important "you're going to be alright" essence present in everything that came after the Black Swordsman Arc (there's a reason why the Golden Age Arc is a prequel to the Black Swordsman Arc). At least when it comes to the first game; Termina is more in line with the Conviction Arc than the Black Swordsman Arc. Also, another biggish game that very much stands under the umbrella of RPGMaker Horror is Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. That one is kind of a psychedelic trip, taking place in the dream-world of the titular Jimmy, and it's gonna take you to some grim places, as well as some more pleasant realms.

Amazing vid as always. Slightly disappointed that DarkWorld Soft did not include Lovecraft's beloved cat in Nehan 2, would have enjoyed seeing that default name. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

When I read about Lovecraft's cat due to the meme about his name being a slur, I was actually moved to read that Lovecraft loved him very much and like many intelligent cats he went to die far from home so that his humans wouldn't feel as sad.

Interesting to see a Lovecraftian indie game from around the same time Eternal Darkness came out. This one seems to be mixed in with japanese slasher stuff too. Eternal Darkness is where my knowledge of Lovecraft's stories starts and stops so it'll be hard not to compare the games even if they're so different lol. Curiously this isn't the first japanese Lovecraftian horror game I've seen. There's also a Virtual Boy (yeah) horror game based on Innsmouth.
