In this video we are looking at the Dodge Ram SRT-10! This Ram gained notoriety as one of the coolest trucks you could buy - a flashy head turner that was fast as a sports car and came with a huge Viper V10 engine! The truck had a following and Dodge and Muscle car fans alike were obsessed with it, but it did have a short life with just 3 models years, introduced in 2004 and gone after 2006. It had an 8.3L V10 with 500 horsepower, but it wasn't without it's flaws and quirks. Watch along for a full history of this truck from concept to cancellation!

I worked at Jeep Truck Engineering in Ram Vehicle Development during the inception of this truck. We had built a few test mules years before the actual Viper truck was released and had an absolute blast driving them around the metro Detroit area, beating up on unsuspecting pony cars of that era. They were a handful to drive but would lay rubber for as long as you were willing to let them. Non stop shenanigans.

I bought my 05 SRT-10 regular cab in 2017 with 2700 miles on it. The truck was basically factory new when I bought it. The only Viper related issue I’ve run into listed here so far is the Clutch Hydraulics needing an upgrade but from what I stumbled on was the issue itself was relative to the way the clutch hydraulics in the Ram were setup and not the Viper itself. Awesome vid overall. You hit all of the more obscure points that I was planning on being a back seat driver on. 😁

I've got a Gen 3 Viper and the parts issue usually falls into one of three categories. 1. Shared part across the Chrysler lineup-usually available and inexpensive. Examples include switches, sensors, etc. 2. Difficult to find Mopar parts but aftermarket substitutes and upgrades are available. Usually pricey. 3. Viper-specific part. Expensive. Often unavailable because Chrysler has a habit of discontinuing parts for low-production vehicles as soon as they can-so you're looking for used or NOS parts at significant markup. That's kind of what you deal with on a rare vehicle. There's not enough of them to make it worthwhile for the aftermarket en masse, and those that do charge a premium because they've got limited numbers that they can sell. The manufacturer doesn't care because it doesn't make sense to make parts for vehicles that are long out of warranty and not numerous enough to generate profit servicing.

I picked up my 2005 Ram SRT-10 for 24k in South Florida with 47k miles on it. Previous owner never drove it. Already had headers, intake, exhaust, LED headlamps and fog lamps, a 1/2 drop. All I added was a short shifter (the stock shifter SUCKS, always missing that 2-3 shift), new coil packs, new dimpled and slotted rotors, stainless steel brake lines and re-flashed the ECM. Only have 61k miles on it and still a BEAST!

I have a 2005 SRT 10 quad cab with -7200 miles, the bed full of a seemingly endless supply of 100 dollar bills, champagne spraying out of the windshield wiper fluid reservoir, and painted in platinum (not platinum color-ACTUAL PLATINUM). I got the rare super-turbo-dilithium warp core engine (so rare that they only made 0 of them). It gets .0000007002 miles per gallon (and runs best when the gas is poured into the tank one drop at a time using a turkey baster), raises people from the dead anytime I drive by a cemetery, and does my laundry for me (including separating delicates). Only real issue I've had with it is occasionally one of the 100 dollar bills isn't as crispy as I prefer, but that's not as big of a deal to the random people I give them away to as much as it's an annoyance to me...

I have an '04 silver that I drove daily to nearly 200k miles. I have no good reason to not drive it right now, but I'm currently enjoying a ratty '62 Beetle. I did have the power steering and oil cooler line leaks. In fact, even the replacement cooler lines leaked. And I did do the clutch hydraulics upgrade. The power steering leak was the most painful. The radiator fan is hydraulically driven from the power steering pump. So a low steering fluid levels also meant some scary engine temperatures.

I had a close buddy with one in 2004, only issue he had was driveshaft twisting, clutch drop at 5800 from a stop, it would twist of, his response, "Fix it and lets try that again "

The college I went to had an automotive program which was sponsored in part by Chrysler in the mid to late 90s. After Daimler took it over, the shop cars were sent back ( who knows what became of them) But in 2004, 1 of the Dodge execs came to visit the school, and since I was still involved with the automotive dept, I got to drive his Ram SRT 10. Well, it certainly moved! BUT we ALL hated the 6 speed shifter position and layout. Even the Dodge executive admitted that it felt like driving an old school bus at times, and took a lot of getting used to, didn't feel natural. Too bad, it was a neat truck!

Just bought a Quad-Cab Edition, THIS WEEK (Nov.1, 2022) hoping to avoid those Transmission issues..!! I seldom drive at the "Abuse" level... so no Racing or Drags... But not beyond a little "Showing Off" once in a while. But I have a "curiosity" my Documentation, and online VIN search show it as a 2005... BUT, it is the Mineral Grey, and NOT "Silver"... and it has the dual rigt-side exhaust and molded bumper of the 2006 models..?? I do not have documents on the exact build date. My only guess is that it WAS Silver, and the previous owner changed out the rear bumper, and upgraded the exhaust, then re-painted it into the 2006 color...

Worth mentioning is that the first prototype of what would become the SRT-10 would be the 1996 Dodge Ram VTS. Never made production, but they wanted to.

The Ram SRT-10 was a great performance truck! While I love the Ram TRX Hellcat that they have now, a RWD version for the street would be great for someone like me! Plus, no one buys trucks like this for fuel economy! They are for fun times on the street!!!!

I have a 2003 HEMI Dodge (first year of the Hem) and now I got a 2006 SRT-10 Mineral grey (last year for the SRT 10)... Thank you Jesus! 😎👍 The weight of these trucks is what makes them slow. It would be cool to put those engines in my 1970 Challenger RT and 1971 Cuda 😃👍

@@orest395 yes sir, and the next big sport truck hit was Chevy’s 454SS C1500 in 1990 before Ford made the first F-150 Lightning in 1993. There were a lot of cool trucks before the high horsepower trucks of today.

It's very loud and grumbly, stick is very short and stiff, you basically can't stall this thing unless on a hill, get 12.8-13.5 mpg, the wheels are really thick tires, probably fit a 33/35, it a very wide car, feels like a tank, and when lowered (I'm a skinny person) I Barely fit in the front, the srt10 has a power steering leak on the pinion, it's a fun truck and I love it, I wish they didn't stop them but people probably crashed Most of them, the bass has some thump to it than other vehicles 1 gear is crazy and 3rd is my favorite
