legendary assassin He is, a good fighter doesn't need to know just how to fight. They need to know how to have the correct mindset to fight and train for a fight in the first place. If not, when a fight comes, yeah you'll know the moves, but you might be overwhelmed and blank out.

I come back to this more often than I'd like to admit. Pretty comforting, when you just failed big time. I do martial arts since a few years now and I still suck. I fail at exercises others do as funny warm ups, I suck at fighting and katas, I injure myself all the time and I feel like I'm just holding back everyone in my sports club when I participate in training. - And I cry a lot when I come home afterwards. I thought about quitting a lot. People in my sports club motivated me though and gave me the feeling I'm a welcome "team mate". Plus I suck at martial arts but I still love it. I love the athletic part of it - the endurance, the calisthenics, the lifting -, I have fun when fighting the right person, I like to use kata as a form of meditation and the heavy bag workout kind of became my drug. Sports have never played a big role in my life - maybe as a tool to enhance my look - but I've now found the one I'd like to stick with cause it's fun. I did my first push up after one year of training and recently passed my first ever belt test which I had never thought I would be capable of. And I have a pretty good roundhouse kick. :-) Failed again just a few days after the belt test but I went to class the next time. Whenever I feel like I failed in training I think of this video and think about how it can help make me better. And I never quit. Always going to have these moments where my best isn't good enough - but I can always say I gave my best. Since I'm actually a happy person - just a shitty athlete - I'm going to thank you for the video if you read this comment. You inspired someone to keep doing martial arts. I wish everyone reading this comment fun and succesful training and a merry christmas time. :-)

Amazing Ando! Love to sentence: You have to make yourself uncomfortable. 'Cause that's exactly it! We have to step out of our comfort zones to learn something new. This is not only for martial arts, that's for everything, that's for life! That's what I say over and over, MA not only teaches you how to defend yourself, it actually tells you what it means to live! It makes you more creative, more confident, better looking, more flexible, fitter, more wise....I mean everything! I love the way you explained that Ando! You did it in an entertaining way, well done! Keep on Sensei Ando!

Sensei Ando, I really hope you would read this it's sort of an Emergency. I have an autistic hyperactive brother who's about to turn 16. In the evening he goes from adorable little child to cornered animal in seconds. Just a while ago when I was downstairs I heard him upstairs scratching and biting my mum, mum isn't strong enough to stop.So she was helpless and couldn't do anything but shout .So what he does is he grabs your arm, while shouting and crying he scratches with his nails and once your hands are weak enough, he pulls ( usually by your hair) and bites your arm/neck. I was okay defending him from mom for a while but he's getting stronger and I'm starting to loose control(I'm turning 18). What I usually do is If he's attacking me I push him by the chest or under the jaw to the sofa while he's scatching my underarm and trying to bite, I try to hold one of his hands by the wrist and calm him till he's tired. Once he's calm he feels sorry and kisses mum to say sorry (he doesn't know how to talk btw) So the question how do I defend myself and someone else from scratching and biting? Wish i could private message but Can you recommend any of your old videos or other sites for pointers? I reaaally hope you would respond sir. Thank-you

Of course, you're welcome to message me or email: ando@senseiando.com. But I'm not a family therapist or a special needs expert, both of which would be more helpful when it comes to recommending medication and creating a behavioral modification program. From a self-defense point of view, just know that restraining someone you love is much more difficult than fighting an attacker. God bless you for your patience!

Thanks, I needed that. I've been trying to push myself lately. Still recovering from a weight walk two days ago: went to a hill by a local hockey arena with two 15lb weights doing curl to overhead press while walking up and down the hill, then started walking backwards. It really does hit a whole other neighbourhood of muscles. What I like about weight walks is they work every muscle in the body while you get some fresh air.

I added a little something to the routine that I found helpful and kind of fun: pick a tree or some other tall thin structure such as a lamppost or telephone poll at or near the bottom of your hill, square up to it, and as you walk backwards away from it up the hill with the weights, dip down with your lead shoulder (the shoulder going backwards, 'lead' sounds confusing going backwards, but it is still the side you're leading with, sorry.) and try and touch your toes with the dumbbell, while moving your head to the same side, like a boxer slipping a punch. I found it engages the lower back muscles and provides a good stretch. Took me awhile to find my balance and rhythm with this, but how sore I am is telling me to keep it up. The good sore, not the bad sore. Cheers, and have fun!

These moments I notice come from regulars than people new to martial arts. These moments are necessary, and a lot the time they come back. The ones that do are there for the right reason -- to truly better theirself. And yeah, martial arts isn't for everyone. I also think it's a necessary form of stress relief. When they vomit and I say "Well, better out than in." I mean it in more than one way. ;)

Hello Ando, superb channel with superb contents, a big like from a fellow viewer... I have a request for you. Please make a video on what's better in a street fight, palm strikes or knuckle strikes? I feel closed fist strikes just don't work as good without gloves. For example, hooks without gloves are pretty dangerous IMO for the hand... It often leads to punching with the last two knuckles if the timing is off, which leads to injury. Palm strikes on the other hand are much safer, they allow you to gather more momentum before impact, they allow you to hit with more power without injuring your hand, and your hand doesn't slip from the target and every hit is more accurate and effective. I would love to see you do a video talking about which one is better for Street fight or gloveless fighting.... Looking for some of your knowledge and wisdom regarding this, thanks.
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the support, sir! And thanks for the video idea. I covered this a little in my video, How to Punch in a Street Fight, but now adding palm heels, I'd follow the rule soft to hard and hard to soft. It's definitely safer to hit the skull with your palm, but it's more effective to hit the body with the knuckles, for example. You basically just break down each area of the body and find a fist or hand shape that gives you the most effect. On the list! Thanks!

i have a "strange" goal as an instructor. i want my students to have doubts and feel like they are not doing it well enough, and get discouraged, and even think about quitting because it isnt worth the pain and everything that goes into martial arts. i usually get this far before i am interrupted and therefore dont get a chance to explain. i dont want my dojo to be simply a place to hang out or a place to drop off your kids while go run errands. i want people to understand that, in here, we work and we work hard. i want there to be students who take time off to decide whether or not they will come back. i want this because those that come back any way will be far better at martial arts and life in general than ill ever be and that is what i want for my students. i want them to go father and deeper than i ever thought possible.

I m really into my filapino stick fighting training. I enjoy it so much that one time I got so into it that I broke something in my room when I swung my sticks around by accident. What should I do? should I exceed my training time? Also I don't' want my passion/desire to get the better of me when I train.

+Justin Shaw The answer is always balance. If you feel out of control, add some mediatation or quiet time. Try visualizing, too. Controlling ourselves is the first goal of martial arts.... but it's not always easy!

Sorry for the late reply, I hope you read this: "Tears of a phoenix can cure any wound of your flesh, but only your tears can cure your soul". Truth to that, tension must be released, or you snap beyond recovery. As long as you don't break in the middle of fighting off a bunch of muggers in a dark alley, it's okay.

I wasn't sure what this video was going to be about, but it has me looking at class completely different ... at least for the last few months my stamina has increased a lot so class has not been to difficult over all... but it's not like I can't make it harder ... I should push as hard as I can for myself and to show sifu I'm putting my all into it... I'll mentally prepare for class tonight... I can't wait to puke too :D

Sir. I've told you before that you are an awesome Teacher but I'll tell you this. If I was the head of a Martial Arts Organization, you're teaching style would be mandatory across the board. Should I ever ascend to that lofty position I'm going to find you Sir. Every Dojo needs one of you.
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
+Smitty Smith Wow. I'm honored, sir. Now hurry up and get that lofty position! :)
@smittysmith61737 жыл бұрын
Working on it Sir. It wouldn't be an actual kidnapping, More like an act of piracy:) It would be up to you to be the Head Teacher or to act as a paid consultant to teach Instructors how to Teach. Without trying to get too crazy about this I do have a problem with most Martial Arts these days. There are tons of "instructors" but few actual "Teachers". I instructed a young student the basic form of Chon Ji. He in turn instructed another the same way I showed him and so on. I watched this and decided it was like clones. Something is lost with each "instruction" no matter how exact that instruction. I know you understand what I mean. Without knowing what the movements between the movements mean it all looks robotic or on the other hand too loose. Simple but important things are lost without an actual Teacher to guide junior instructors and this drives me a little crazy. Thank you Sir for you're time.

Ha! Yes... please don't throw a hood over my head! Teaching is definitely a separate skill set from fighting. I've been teaching for many years, and am constantly discovering new tricks to make lessons stick. But even on my best day, there is always disappointment. That's just part of being a teacher, I think! But it's worth it! Don't give up!
@smittysmith61737 жыл бұрын
Exactly! This is why I dropped out of the tournaments years ago to concentrate on teaching. I discovered that for me at least, fighting tourny style with all the rules didn't work well. Being an old Marine on top of it just caused everything to devolve into a brawl and that's not good at all. I'll stick to being Mr. Miyagi :)

Drink lots of hot beverages like tea, or even hot pepper tea. Your sinuses won't be able to clog after enough of that. I drink a tea of cayenne, honey, ginger, cinnamon, lemon...seems to help.
