My dad always said there's nothing like the right tool for the job - a contour scribe, chains for the tires.... And seeing those clouds initially being stopped by the mountain, and then just sliding over is a good reminder that the earth is an amazing living system - everything affects everything else, whether we see it or not. You do a great job of making the beauty of that visible for us. Bedankje!

Just a few tips from a Lapplander, use tealight insted of candles. Tealights are used as a resorse to keep warm. Also if you have a good waterresors let the water run just a little during cold days. In the tent: use stones one the stove and shift them as they get hot, place them in buckets under your bed to keep warm longer. You should have a second (and third layer of tent, that would help. Put textile up? Avery good one is velvet…

Also, tea lights under Terra cotta pots turned upside down over the lights placed in sand will generate added heat. They act like tiny kilns that hold/radiate heat. There's info on utube . My sister had success in her hoop gardens during cold Grey winter days/nights. I'm preparing to throw some for myself,as heating bills are getting huge. Love your videos! A tent 'fly' is really useful in all kinds of weather - it is made much like a tarp with eyelets to attach to small hoops at/along the tent's pitch; mine are made with heavy duty canvas that, when in place, the air between tarp and tent skins create a thermal insulation providing warmth in winter and coolness in hot weather..worth a try, Martjin?

@@sdqsdq6274 I think he'd already done that if he could.. I don't know much about solar PV, but I guess the panels make low voltage electricity (under 5V?). The lower the voltage the higher the losses in transport (meaning you should use cables as short as possible). In this environment the tradeoff point probably changes quite a bit.. but we should run some numbers to find out

My uncle has a small mountain hut, also with PV and batteries. He uses a broken chest freezer for insulation. Batteries and converters are built into it and the cables are led out through a sealed hole. On the inside, he installed additional insulation boards because there was still enough free space. Seems to work quite well for him and holds up well in cold weather.

to make better heat in your battery box do this 1. put candel in a bowl . 2. put a wire cage around it make sure it's wider and taller then candel. 3 put a terracotta pot ( turned upside down ) over the cage. candel gets the O2 becouse of the cage, the candel heats the pot and radiates heat.

@@christinahannahroberts6137 'cause he used stones of different size and thickness and as a result the roof slope is not smooth. A way to get around this problem is to use stones with regular size and thickness, which are available in Luserna quarries: obviously there's a price to pay because querrymen make a selection and that means time and money. If I had been in Martin's shoes I had faced the financial troubles of getting a brand new set of stones for the roof. I understand he used what was available on the spot, but since it is a complete restoration ,the Luserna stuff was a far better solution than using univen size stones. Another matter that baffled me, was that Martin did not hire anyone who was experienced in roof covering, just for a small length of time ( one week?): that would have spared him a lot of troubles and waste of time. Unfortunately Martin likes to do anything on his own and as a consequence he is unwilling to consider anybody else's advice. Thus I understand some extravaganzas, like making a kitchen in an open field and later on complaining that water pipes are frozen in wintertime!

Mr. Doolard, a nice 10 kw diesel generator as a backup would hit all your needs. Use it when necessary it’ll charge your batteries and run your equipment on those days you don’t have other alternatives. As your property develops you’re going to find it impossible without one.

In you I see someone taking a self-directed path doing all kind of things for the first time, challenging yourself. And Many of such channels have the fast forward parts, where you bring a wonderful sense of steady going, much space for silence and contemplation and taking in nature.

Hi Martijn, Amazon sells Conture gauges that work perfectly for around $20. I have one that I used to cut new flooring to fit next to the stone wall by my fireplace, measurements were exact. Your painting looks beautiful, not sure a person could be more at peace then painting in a tent surrounded by such beauty. 😊

He is like a Mr Rogers for adults. .........his calming way, his gentle explanations, never frustrated.......teaching us all, as Mr Rogers did, about specific things.....in this case on various building topics......... as well as be an example on how to move about the world on peaceful terms with everyone and everything. Oh and never forget to add a little art to everything you do....just like Fred did. Thanks neighbor.

I agree.. suggest a multi fuel generator and tied to your very local grid.. I would guess that the generator could be set up to automatically start/stop when the batteries need charging or protection from the cold etc. Maybe your charge controller could handle controlling the generator also.

Absolutely gorgeous! I love your videos for the photography and the serenity, it makes my Sunday! Lots of advice already, I'll add my voice to creating a heat exchange between your generator and the battery box and running a small heater (incandescent bulb, heated pillow..etc) in the box for the batteries. As for running water, which is the most important, you might consider moving your indoor plumbing schedule up a bit and putting it into one of the cabins at least temporarily. That way you can get a feel for where things can go when you are ready to build out the bathroom and kitchen.

My friend! Completely finish the battery box with thick foam, 100 mm! And the roof and the floor under the batteries! Inside for heat:: 1. Either turn on the incandescent lamp. 2. Either pour hot coals into a metal or ceramic dish with a lid. Put it on a stone or a board (so that the plastic does not melt). I'm counting on your wintering!)))🙂 My Monday morning coffee is dear to me under your videos!!!))😉 From Russia with love! Good luck, my friend!🤝

You did a very good painting! I was a professional potter for over 45 years, I have to give it up because of multiple back injuries. I still do a little bit just for pleasure, I started joining two groups of painters, I enjoy it very much. I was told by one of the group member to join the group exhibition next year.

hmmm there are two buildings.. that could have log burners in.. and a kitchen.. and batteries.. pretty predictable.. we are expecting a cold cold winter here in the Ariege; and I wouldn't want to be in a tent. I found the disposable handwarmers you shake great in a sleeping bag in Bhutan in sub zero temps then into boots in the morning. They really work well if you can get them. I grew up virtually off grid in the middle of the wilds of wales - always had a petrol generator handy when we got snowed in. Thanks for the vlog - always a joy x

Martin, put an electric heater with a temperature regulator in the electronics box for photovoltaics, the weakest is enough, it will keep the temperature above zero there with a consumption of a few hundred watts. Ján from Slovakia is rooting for you
