I'm returning from my weekend hike to Conca del Pra. Finishing up the patio and building back the stairs in between the two cabins. I'm bringing the car to the valley to get a new clutch. I'm cleaning the walls from old mortar with a high pressure washer. The masonry stove has arrived which takes a few rides up and down.

Another week has passed and Martijn is moving right along. Last week, with the three bummers (buttercake, bread & tomatoes), I had this feeling that maybe a break was due. Not only is our friend doing all this work alone (most of the time) but he is also planning, shooting and editing this weekly video. In case you hadn't noticed Martijn's videos are well planned, well filmed, and very thoughtfully edited. He has to not only set up the camera for the shot and then shoot the footage, but many times he has to set up a second and third shot of the same moments. Like the raspberries walking home from town. He sees the raspberries and thinks the shots through. Then he sets the camera up for the walk up the the raspberry bush, another setup for a shot of picking the berries, one eating the berries, and even a close up of picking the berries so he can edit the entire sequence together so we see a full continuous story in the few seconds this sequence happens. As a producer myself all this planning, staging and shooting takes time, and then you still have to edit all the pieces together for our pleasure... and you never see the camera, tripod, etc.. Thank you Martijn. I watched all three episodes (about 7 hours long over three evenings last week) of Peter Jackson's Get Back, his thoughtful edit of the many hours of footage shot during the Beatles writing, arranging, recording and performing their almost last complete album, Let It Be. After that I happened to listen to a podcast about how Disney's streaming business (and many others as well) are struggling financially due to the almost infinite number of choices viewers have for entertainment (including KZbin, Netflix, TikToc, The BIG channels like HBO, STARZ, etc., and countless others). What is it about Martijn's weekly video that draws so many viewers week after week, and is this the future of our constant search for meaningful storytelling? While you are pondering all this with me please be sure (and I am talking to the man in the mirror here) to get out there and do something meaningful and profitable ($, 💖, 👍, 🤩, etc.).

Just so Matijn knows, he is an inspiration. I passed the DIY concept and his channel on to a friend who inherited a home from his dad. It is a large undertaking. However, so is cycling over the years, riding from town to town, nonstop.

Disney is faltering because the people who took over Disney needed a job and want to make money. That was not Disney's motivation. I don't look to TicTok, Netflix, or Disney for entertainment. There are too many boring choices available, and then those choices all try to get political. I have a mother and a father who have been my best guiding force, so, I don't need strangers via entertainment influencing me, blatantly. Martijn is successful because he is the opitomy of the phrase "less is more." Most importantly, he has his own ideas, inspired from someplace else, and as nice as he is.

The profitable thing is not guaranteed. It isn’t actually easy to break through on KZbin. The timing and consistency is super important. There is some weird luck of the gods included. Another channel I watch the guy just surpassed the channel he previously worked for. I have watched Martin from the very start and I agree the story telling , decent shots and a lack of intrusive opinion and talking makes it a very special journey .

And Martijn, if you are willing to loose part of your horrible American-English accent (so common in the Netherlands for not hearing anything else on TV) and start speaking more proper UK-English your vids would really be the ultimate, but with a bold l as in wall and an even bolder r as in room, they are and will barely be audible because of your terrible American accent. Do something about your English language: take an example from Frans Timmermans, who speaks perfect English. You can do that too.

It amazes me that 2hrs after this video was posted that 31 thousand people have viewed it. That is because your content is interesting and instructive. Your photos and drone shots bring to life the reason you chose this place to revive and then to live within. Such a peaceful beauty. You are correct that walking the road allows you to appreciate the unique beauty and peacefulness of the area. Being tired from using your body is great !! I got teary when Martijn talked about walking back from the town and how the contact with walking outside is like no other method of transportation. I think that my walks are the closest I get to where humans belong. That connection with what is around me, no filters, just me and all of it, feeds my soul. Our world provides many things but often they shield me from truly sensing what is and where we belong in the All.

Agreed, the lower parts needed to be removed. Tomatoes are " hungry" plants, take more nutrients. I think his compost pile should be much closer to the garden space for two reasons, less waling back and forth, plus after the compost is done, it's much easier to add to his small garden. Tomatoes grow well in larger containers as long as there's good drainage.

The main thing that distinguishes a masonry heater from other wood-fired heating appliances is the ability to store a large amount of heat. This means that you can rapidly and cleanly burn a large charge of wood without overheating your house. The heat is stored in the masonry thermal mass, and then slowly radiates into your house for the next 18 to 24 hours.

Man, the house looks just great. What a beautiful job. Such high quality. Raspberries? They looked like blackberries to me. Just saying. That stove came from Minninoplace? Must have cost a fortune to ship.

Hi, just recently discovered your channel! I’m really enjoying your videos of homesteading in Italian alps. They remind me of my grandfather’s stories of him growing up in Frankfurt and his hiking trips to the mountains! You remind me of Clint Eastwood finding his place of solitude lol!

It’s funny I started watching from the beginning when you had your last break and each time I see them over I catch certain details I missed and I smile. While I wait for the new episode it fills by me with joy seeing them again so take as much as you need and I’ll reminisce and enjoy each scene of the old ventures you lived. Loved when the chickens started running after you ❤ I’m sure many feel as I do in wanting to be there to help in some small way. Someday 😊

Agosto is vacation time, so go for it. It is difficult to tell how much time you invested in planning, executing and then doing film editing of each errand, chore or meal. The lie down at your table was a first, a good indicator of fatigue and batteries running low. No need to excuse a break in the action since we armchair directors are completely passive in your enterprises. At this time of the year, you deserve more lying around, maybe just watching the chickens or the clouds drifting by. That sort of thing is well earned.

it's always a pleasure watching your videos, seeing your high standards at work, and you at work as welll... to echo others, yes, you are allowed to rest, although I understand the goal. I started watching your videos when you first bought your property. you remind me of one of my sons, although both of my sons cycle... the one did a couple month journey, not as long as yours, from Juno? Alaska , I don't remember now, with his then new wife. it was a wonderful trip for them. Anyway, I always enjoy your videos which are alway of such quality and in such a beautiful environment.

Yes, folks, the man is actually human! I was beginning to wonder! He works from sunup to sundown, hard physical work as well as food preparation, vidiography, walks through the mountains and gardening! How he keeps going is a complete mystery to me! All that being said, I will truly miss him if he is absent next week! He didn't say how long he would be on holiday, but I know he needs and deserves some relaxing down time! So, Martijn, take your holiday and come back soon! We'll be here waiting with baited breath ❣❣

Ek woon in Kaapstad, Suid Afrika. Baie dankie!

Thankyou for taking us on your walks Martijn. I used to enjoy going for a wander and doing a bit of exploration & foraging along the way too. Unfortunately my health & fitness have gotten so bad over the last couple of years that i now struggle to walk 200-300 yards on the flat - before im knackered-out & need a rest. The drone shots are fantastic too. Thankyou Martijn for imagery that makes me feel like im there. Thankyou. 😊
