#7 Getting the new beams up on the mountain

Final works before the Christmas holidays. I'm continuing digging out the basement of the small cabin. The first window frame is being finished and I'm visiting the sawmill to place an order for wood and drive it up the mountain.

Hey Martijn nice work up there. Being a carpenter for myself for quit some time i noticed one thing in your video I would like to warn you about. Your fingers a way to close to the saw sometimes. holding the wood while cutting behind you fingers for only a few centimeters is a no go! please hold in mind that even a smal btatery powered saw wil aet you fingers in less than a second. I learned through the years and had some close cals myself. So please take care.

Those little Suzukis are great cars for your situation, small, light, great climbers, hard to get bogged down. As long as you don't have anything too heavy to tow they're pretty much perfect.

I live in a cold, northern climate. Behind my workshop (before I had power) I built a small box lined with some bricks on the floor (stones would work fine), and in order to keep my batteries from getting too cold in the winter I had a fire going, and I would heat stones in it. Every hour or so I would take a stone from the fire and put it in the box, and it kept the inside of the box warm, and my batteries also. Simple little trick. Very cheap. Took me 20 minutes to build, but increased my productivity overall.

Having built a house in Fondi (near Rome) 20 years ago, I completely get it. But the work is play time for me, and it is never done. I was actually happy when an old wall in a "Rudere" (ruins) on the property (not my house) collapsed two weeks ago from all the rain. Now I am rebuilding it to last two thousand years, and hiding little treasures in the walls for future archeologists. On my wish list is a John Deere 1026r tractor. Cheers and enjoy yourself.

People often give those Suzuki Jimny vehicles a lot of criticism but they seem to be pretty good as far as I can tell. I remember one of the guys in our Mountain Rescue team driving one and he just got to places that the bigger 4x4’s couldn’t get to.

Sitting here in Northern Norway on Andøya, we get alot of Italians to visit us to see the midnight sun and the wales. Even the Northern Light in the winter. Its dark here at this time, and windy. But in the summer its light all day long and beautiful fishing and camping. We have sand here and marshland. And stone. But its hard and round. I like the stones which you can use there. They are so flat and easy to stack it seems. In the Viking time and beyond people made their houses from stone and marsh here. There were no trees, very little. Its beautiful in the Alps, it seems cold. Very nice stonework on the house. It will become very beautiful there. Keep up the good work. Reagards frm Norway. Ps. Some long ago stone mason (or just an "ordinary" farmer) spent a lot of time getting those stones to be just right for his purpose. What an astounding job he/she did with the tools of the day and all of the hours of work it must have taken. Not unusual for me to stand in awe of the work of the common man in all conditions and geographic areas. And now you have the unenviable task of undoing it and then redoing it according to your design. Good luck and good health to you and your poor back!

I find myself questioning the removal of those basement stone slabs, so meticulously and laboriously arranged. Why were they set up on edge like that? My own thought is that it has something to do with providing structural support for the thick, and heavy, walls. Unless the building is sitting on bedrock all around, or unless there is a frost foundation under the walls, removing these basement slabs may be compromising the safety of the walls.

@@AMYV3 ...like the Amish ; ) ...I think most of them were/are of German extraction & even speak an older kind of German- tongue ...my family called themselves "Pennsylvania Dutch" (Rummerveldt or feldt was the original name I think before they Anglicized it) ...and though that branch of my family were shipbuilders from Rotterdam the "Pennsylvania Dutch were actually German I think ....what is lost in translation ...and through the generations? Anyway earlier European immigrants of many different countries banded together in various towns and supported each other in helping to build their new lives in America ...both practical help and spiritual. That kind of community is missed in modern mega-city life.

So good man!! Respect for bringing all those beams up it's one hell of a job. This brings back memories of one of my volunteering experiences in Italy where i had to do the same thing. The place i was staying was unreachable by car so they had the beams deliverd on the other hill right across the house. We had to take the beams down one hill, cross the brigde over the river and then go back up the other hill to get to the house. It was soo hot and those beams where a pain in the ass to carry haha! Together with the other volunteers we carried them by two, taking rests each 5mins cause going up the hill on foot, in that warmth with those beams was no joke. While we were having a rest i noticed our host, Stefano passing us by. Not only did he carry the same weight we were carrying by two all by himself, he was even joking and pepping us up with "come on guys, these are not that heavy", all with a big smile on his face as he passed us by and kepy going upwards. I was amazed by his positivity at that moment. This small little man, already some age on his counter just walked by with the exact same amount of weight we, young mens of 20 had to carry by two. I later asked him how he did that cause i just couldn't believe it. He then replied me with "Meditation, good mindset and GOOD FOOD". I'll never forget this moment and i learned so much from it. It takes something different do to stuff like this but i also realised anyone can do it as long as you put your mind to it. Thank you Stefano! :)

Howdy! I’m late to the party, but still throughly enjoying watching the transformation of your once neglected structures receiving a soon to be beautiful transformation! I’m an old broken retired builder, that still makes his fair share if sawdust (man glitter). The lumber that you bought that are all different sizes in a lot, or bundle of, is known by many names, but technically it’s called out as, “random length, width, and thickness”, and is usually much less expensive that ordering out all the same dimensions. Anyway, such determination! Pushing through the cold and snow is so brutal on the body and equipment. So congratulations on that success! Oh, and a great saw to have is a Japanese back draw saw. They look flimsy, but they’re not. Find or order one through Amazon. The more you use it, the more you’ll find it to be your go to hand saw. Cheers from Dallas Texas!
