I’ve been playing 50 years. Finger picker, mostly on my couch. In the mid-2000s, kids gone, college paid for, I spent several years trying every high end guitar I could get my hands on, searching for my forever guitar. Martins, Huss&Dalton, Taylor’s, Guilds, you name it. I wanted to fall in love. I tried an ec early on and could not believe my ears. Didn’t really want a signature guitar, but kept coming back to it. In 2008 finally bought it. I’ve never regretted the decision or wanted more. Since then, I’ve played a bunch of other nice guitars, a couple costing between $10k-$15k. The ec has held up just fine. I usually describe the tone as “warm honey.” It may not be the guitar for everyone, but it sure checked all my boxes.

I bought a 2009 Clapton. I was lucky enough to be able to shop on 48th street NYC when there were at least 3 Martin Dealers in the street. I tested a 00028, OM28, and a Clapton. I hated (and still do) the toxic orange finish of the Clapton, but it hands down blew (and still ) away all the other same sized Rosewood models. Of my 14 guitars. It is the one I will never sell. I play in a very well known BrooklynnBluegrass jam circuit, and although my skills aren’t the best, My Clapton’s Tone Always turns heads. Love that guitar👍

I have played both of these, and prefer the brightness of the 000-28 Reimagined series over the mellowness of the EC. It just comes down to what kind of tone you like in a Martin. If you play them both and like the EC better, spend the extra $700 and get the EC.

I went to a local music store this week to check out both the re-imagined 000-28 and the EC signature model. A video only goes so far, I think. I'm a pretty particular listener and I normally pick up on even slight differences that others don't hear. With that said, though, the only difference, in person, I heard between the models is that the 000-28 re-imagined version sounded brighter to me. It could just be the strings, though. So, if the sound is the same, what's the real difference? A signature high on the neck and a different neck profile. I prefer the re-imagined neck profile. Now I have the guitar bug for the re-imagined 000-28. I have the 000-18 model in sunburst and think it would go nicely with a traditional finished 000-28. I'd have to hide it from my wife, though, because I already have 8 guitars, 7 resonator guitars, a banjo, and 8 tenor ukuleles. Thinking of making a secret compartment in my bedroom wall to hide future purchases.

I got a deal on/bought an EC a couple of years ago but just couldn't get on with the neck profile - sort of a V shape. Sounded good but I sold it a few months later totally due to the neck profile. It was a good learning experience about neck shapes! For me it's a hand-cramp producer for extended playing/gigging. It was my first and only experience with that neck profile. It's not for me but obviously it works great for Eric Clapton! ;)

I got to play a 000-28EC a couple hours ago. It's a fantastic instrument. I own a OM-21 which also has the same body but different scale length and can hear a major difference between the two. The thick 000-28EC neck is disconcerting at first but is actually easy to get used to. I need one.

The previous 000-28 standard model was notably more different than the 000-28EC, when compared to the new standard. With the 'reimagined' changes, the 000-28 has much more closely aligned with the EC 'where it counts': while all three have been Sitka and EIR, the previous 000-28 had bracing that wasn't scalloped and used closed tuners; the new 000-28 and the EC have the same bracing now, and open-gear tuners. The biggest functional difference between the two now is that the EC has the modified-V neck with a standard taper, the standard uses the MLO (modified low oval) with a high-performance taper. Different strings come on them, which can make a difference, but once you change the strings, that's irrelevant. Aside from Eric's signature and the paper label the toner on the top (cosmetic), and the gloss neck versus satin neck that you noticed, the string spacing at the bridge is probably the biggest noticeable difference: but that's 2-1/4" on the EC, 2-5/32" on the standard: that's a difference of 3/32", that's 0.09" difference. At the 12th fret, the fingerboard goes from 2-1/8" to 2-1/4" wide on the EC. Another cosmetic difference would be that the standard has antique binding, whereas the EC has ivoroid binding. The standard has bold herringbone and a standard rosette, the EC has fine herringbone and herringbone in the rosette. Different dot on the pins, different case... Of course, we're discussing compressed youtube video over PC speakers, you need to hear these in person, with the same strings to remove that variable, but otherwise, slight variances in the woods could account for more audible differences than the specs themselves cause.

Leslie Bright Down at the bottom of the hood there might be, aside of the solid ‘genuine mahogany’ of the EC neck, a “personal touch” when being put together at Nazareth (as cunningly observed in the video), because I once had both models and got rid of the 000-28 (a 2018 Reimagined model, BTW) keeping the 2015 EC which sounded fuller and projected a lot more, using same exact strings, 92/8. However I must admit there’s a very small difference favorable to the Standard 000-28 in the hands of Quinton here, probably because of the strings, making it sound a wee bit clearer and a tad louder... I don’t know 🤭

@@fernandofernandezescalante2554 Martin has started specifying the neck of standard models as "select hardwood". To date, this has either been genuine mahogany, or Spanish cedar, either of which is acceptable. Both of my Martins were spec'd as 'select hardwood', but both are genuine mahogany (often referred to as Honduran mahogany, regardless of not coming from Honduras). As much as I love most of the aspects of the EC, I'll admit a preference for the MLO neck. But that's personal preference; another may prefer the V...

Leslie Bright 😂 I definitely don’t dig the “V” wider neck, and that was the main (and only) reason I sought the Reimagined 000-28, but again, I found the EC a much better sounding guitar (already broken up and open?) and that’s why I kept it, but I know that the timber thing is complicated, after the “Reimagined” appointments winding up on most Standard Series models is there any truth in the rumors pointing at “premium” Sitka and Rosewood used for the Clapton? Could that, apart of the signature thing and aesthetic details, justify the extra U$S 650?
@lesliebright3860
@lesliebright3860 4 жыл бұрын
@@fernandofernandezescalante2554 Martin grades wood on cosmetics, they don't do tap testing or the like. For a spruce like Sitka, the grade is on a scale of 1 to 8. The reference is a bit older, but the way it read was, a standard 28 should be a grade of 3/4, whereas a herringbone should be a 5/6. Even though the standard series now has herringbone trim (save the D28), it should (theoretically) be a 3/4 grade top, whereas an EC should be a 5/6 top. Again, that's appearance-only. A D-42 or a 42 Martin will be a 7, have more uniform grain used; a D45 would be an 8. Some will argue that such can affect the end-result sound, others will state that it's only appearance, and a plain D28 could sonically equal a D45. The 000-28EC was originally introduced in 1996, and I would suggest that it began the reemergence of Martin. Many signature models have come and gone since then, but the 000-28EC has become a staple. The reimagined Series didn't come about until the D28 was done in late 2017, then the rest of the standard series, the "reimagined" series, came about in 2018. In 2019, the old standard series was discontinued, and the 'reimagined' series became the new standard series. (I don't know of grading of rosewood or mahogany.) With the new specs, I'm not sure what the future of the 'regular' EC will be. They have the 'other' EC models now, the white and blue models (though I don't know if they'll be around long). (And, there's been Brazilian, and Madi too; but those are now collectors' too.)

I thought side by side that the Clapton had greater resonance, a fuller tone. More depth and round fullness. The regular 28 sounded bright but flatter by comparison. I have a Clapton and every time I pick it up, I'm astonished by how resonant the wood is, how notes spring from it as if powered from within. It's really a magnificent guitar. I have a 1960s D28 I bought when I was in high school, and several other Martins but this is the most amazing of them all.

I agree. But I exchanged mine for a 000-18MD because I could not play that neck. I wish I could have kept that particular guitar, it was beautiful, and I think the neck helped give it that extra resonance..........more surface area and mass under the strings. Anyway, I like mahogany more than Indian rosewood and the MD, while not everyone's cup of tea, has zing in spades and like you, it pleases me every time I play it. I also had a D-28 from high school back in the 60's, and it was destroyed in a fire when I left it somewhere I thought was safe. C'est la vie.

There are both great guitars. You have to play one and decide for yourself - then play it for a year and you will know what you've got. I've had a reimagined 000 28 for about a year now. It was from the Martin Custom Shop, hanging on the wall at Portland Music - nice folks. Mine is unique, I think, in that it has a torrified top and a modified V neck with a performance artist taper. I don't think any other Martin comes with this neck combination, don't know why. Mine just gets better and better. I don't particularly like the aging toner on the EC, but different strokes for different folks. Martin and lots of other companies are making fabulous guitars now - we are in a golden age for guitars.

Eric always said on his signature model they took the unplugged guitar and Martin measured the action, scanned the guitar to see what the bracings were like dimensions wise and copied it in full as near as they could to the 30s model he played. That's got to have a sound changing effect. Either way its an awesome guitar that everyone who plays it loves.

At first I thought that the EC sounded warmer and fuller. But if you go back to around 3:00 when he strummed one and then the other, he strummed the EC more in the middle of the sound hole. He strummed the regular one just at the back edge of the sound hole. That is more than enough difference in the strumming proximity to void any objective comparison in tone.

You guys should compare two identical D-18s or something and see how much difference there is, or two J-45s, or whatever you have two of in stock. To me, these two might have some differences (the neck might make a difference), but it might also just be the difference between two specific but otherwise identical guitars, or even two sets of strings.

Of course they are different. I´ve own both and the Clapton is a superior guitar in every way. Martin uses a higher quality wood in the clapton, the rosewood grain back and sides are tighter and darker. The Clapton is louder, more articulate and has more bass. The 000 28 is a superb guitar but the clapton is better. The only thing you have to consider is the V neck. It´s not for everybody so make shure you try one first.

the EC looks better for sure with the vintage toner top ; it also sounds marginally better , but you did play it each time more smoother than the standard series 😕 ; anyhoo I would go for the OOO EC even it's about a few hundred bucks more. regarding string spacing nut width etc. I personally do not go more narrow than 1&3/4 nut and 2&1/4 saddle , cause I'm strictly finger style player only ; given that , if you own several guitars and all are differing necks , your fingers will learn to adjust automatically with the guitar , rather quickly without any noticeable mistakes. ❣😎

I traded up my standard 000-28 for the EC yesterday, even though I find the neck very troublesome. I cant get my thumb around it and it's crippling my chording. I had my eyes and ears open when I paid up for it and did it because of the amazing tone, that made the excellent sound of the standard sound muffled by comparison. Now after a day I want my old one back, but it's disappointing to say the least to go back to its 'inferior' tone. I have always, for 50 years, gone with slender neck profiles, and while your comment is vaguely encouraging to me, I'm not sure I can teach the old dog that I am, this new trick. All about anatomical adaptation, and I don't want to sacrifice the amazing sound of the EC, but if I can't play it.......?

Gents there is a few differences quite a few. With its short scale, modified V neck and 1-3/4” nut width, the vintage-styled 000-28EC is unique among Martin's current line up. Most of Martin’s 000/OM bodied guitar guitars feature a long 25.4” scale neck. The shorter 24.9” scale, wider 2-1/4” bridge pin spacing, and rear-shifted vintage-style scalloped bracing make the 000-28EC a particularly rich, warm, and open instrument. Sitka spruce and beautifully quartered Indian rosewood with parchment bindings and vintage appointments. Herringbone and zigzag trimmings, bone nut and saddle, ebony board and bridge, bevel-edged tortoise pickguard. High gloss lacquer finished body and neck, including the headstock’s front and rear. Vintage style tuners, old-style headstock logo. With deluxe hardshell case

The Clapton model has different neck, braces and string spacing. The mod v Mahogany neck is larger than stock 00028. The bracing is 5/16” braces vs 1/4” and the string spacing is also at 1/4 inch vs 5/32 for stock, which is a shade above 1/8 inch. I also think that they hand tune the braces more on the EC. I’ve played both side by side and the Clapton plays easier with a low growl when fingerpicked. I’d go for the EC sunburst as my choice.

I tried most of the " re-imagined" variants and liked the 000-28 EC the best tonally. I bought it and ended up returning it and getting the 000-18 MD instead. I could not play that massive neck comfortably. The greater mass of the neck probably gives the EC more resonance than the standard. I wanted to keep it and really gave it a go but am too old to relearn the instrument, which speaks to the extremity of the difference in feel the EC has in comparison. Aside from that, they use a darker color toner, which probably makes it more attractive. I finally bypassed all these issues with my choice. The 000-18 MD is a very bright sounding guitar. If I'd wanted warmth and depth I'd have bought another dread.

Mine is an 000-28 Norman Blake model 2005 with 12 frets and slotted head. Otherwise the same as the EC, I think. Nice guitser -- but not a D-28 Brazilian,which I also have. The 28 sounds great in Open D for some reason -- rearrly projects the sound out.

@benniejohnson81
@benniejohnson81 3 жыл бұрын
The EC sounds fuller because he strummed right over the sound hole. On the other one he strummed on the back edge of sound hole. Any guitar sounds different strumming in those different spots. So we can’t really make an objective comparison. Go back to just after 3:00 and notice that he doesn’t strum each guitar in the same spot. Very important.

Absolutely right. No two pieces of wood will behave identically. In this particular demo, I agree that the EC sounds a bit warmer. The same difference could very well show up when comparing one EC model to another or a stock 28 to another.

Hi, Great video thanks. I'm looking for your opinion on the best choice of strings for my 000-28EC? Most people seem to say the maximum gauge for it are 12s I guess, given the shorter scale length. I'm using it for fingerstyle blues. What do you think? Thanks, James

Nice test. I like the strumming comparison and the cutting between models when playing. To me there was a sligt difference when strumming but none when playing. There could of course be more in real life. But then I chose a DR-28 Sigma instead of a Martin D-28 as it wasn't worth 2.000$ more !!

I have the 09028 standard bracing non scalloped. Its definitely a more finger picking boxier sound than todays 00028. The ec and standard 00028 are very similar now due to it bracing. Maybe a difference in tone wood grading picked for each model?

I prefer the Standard 000-28's tone to the EC. I think you could hear the Standard much better in the Mix, with its predominant mid range, the EC doesnt have that, the EC has a very balanced tone which would be great for playing by yourself. just my silly ole opinion

It sounds like there's a bit more low end to the EC and more mids to the reg. Is that in his hands because of the neck profile or are they really more different than advertised? I'm not shy on neck profiles. I'm more concerned with the actual sound of the guitar

In reality though, Select Hardwood on Martins is still Mahogany. The reason they call it this is because many of the headstocks will have wings. So in a way, the "Select Hardwood" is not a true one piece neck. Thats all it means. And that doesnt mean all models with select hardwood have wings either. Plenty of models with select hardwood are a one piece solid neck and headstock. Its just Martin covering their ass when people notice the wings on the headstock.

I could go on and on. What are the specific differences between these models? that's why we watch these videos. for exact info so we can make an informed decision. statements like "I think" or "it might be" or " Id Imagine" are less than helpful! Not a valid test with regards to tone or overall sound. The setups are different first off. Besides that, you can compare two exact models of any guitar and each will have a different sound quality to it -- every guitar is unique, in that respect. You can compare the physical construction and materials, as for the sound, that is individual to the guitar itself given the composition and age, etc. That said, go with the EC model...it's a beautiful guitar overall. On another note, I have played no-name model guitars that sound GREAT, simply because of the age of the wood and the setup (strings used, etc).

Is there a real, appreiable difference between a OOO-28 and the OOO-28EC Eric Clapton signature model? Basically, no, there is not. Once you get above the 18 series, Martin guitars start looking better and more deluxe and ge a bit more playable, but don't necessarily sound any better. That's because the solid, straight-grained spruce and rosewood and mahogany and ebony and Koa and other tonewoods Martin uses in the -18 series are the same quality as the woods they use for their.21, -28, -35, -41, -42 or -45 models. My advice? Save a few hundred clams and buy the D-18, OM-18, OOO-18 instead. What DOES seem to make acoustic guitars sound better is .. well ... time plus superior build quality. Fully dried tonewoods, especially soudboards, tend to sound better as they age, because as they do so the resins in the soundboards, bracing, back and sides and fretboard crystallize. This apparently opens up the pores of the wood somewhat and allow it to vibrate more ideally Good acoustic guitar music is all about great sounding tonewoods and solid, careful build quality. The pricy exteror appointments allmanufacturers offer are for collectors and those guitar enthuiasts with plenty of $$$. I mean, if one were to buy a 30,000 to 50,000 dollar guitar, wouldn't you become a bit scared of damaging it? Great instruments need to be played, not hidden away in their jail of a case, like a jailbird.

With the subtlety of sound difference with my better headphones on, the fact that the strings are different would make me even less likely to think there’s a substantial difference, let alone the sound difference of the same model guitar - individual to individual. I would happily take either one secondary to the ergonomics of a great feeling neck
