This was the very first airliner I flew on as a child between Chicago (Midway) and Charlotte, with a stop in Asheville. I flew on just about every type the old Eastern AL ever operated. Where is this bird now? It won't be at EAA, that's for sure. RIP Super Falcon!

This plane was restored in MIA's old "corrosion corner" just prior to this.

When I was young and living in Berea Ohio, my grandmother fell ill and was rushed to the Hospital with what was later diagnosed as a stroke. My mother flew down to be with her during what could have been her last hours on earth. When my mother flew back we went to pick her up at Cleveland Hopkins airport, and when her aircraft arrived, an Eastern Airlines Martin 404 just like this one, the left engine caught on fire as it pulled into the gate. It was scary as hell not knowing what would happen, but they quickly put out the fire and everyone got off the plane unharmed. Now I look at these rare old birds and wish I had one. Or maybe just see one up close. They are rare as hell now as the Convair 240 series outsold them.

My first Eastern Martin 404 flight was from Atlanta to Rome, GA in 1955 sixty five miles away. Dinner was served. The 404 was a connection from my Delta DC-3 flight from Augusta to Atlanta first. Ticket cost $11, and took me a year to save up at 10.

My very first plane trip was in an Eastern 404 from Mobile, Alabama to New Orleans in 1956 when I was 6 yoa. We transferred to an Eastern Super Connie to continue home to Houston

Use to ride on Martin 404's in the 1960's between Roanoke, Va and Atlanta, Ga and Washington, D. C. and sometimes Richmond, Va with Piedmont Airlines. In 1961 Piedmont bought 36 404's mostly from TWA but several were Eastern. TWA and Eastern flew them from when new in 1951 to 1969 then Piedmont, Southern, Mohawk and a few others flew them into the early 1970's to late 1970's. One night flight from Atlanta to Roanoke, I sat next to the number one engine and the roar of the engine and rattle of the plane was highlighted by a long stream of fire shooting out of the exhaust pipes. I was told it was there also in the daytime, you just couldn't see it as well. Piedmont began replacing theirs in 1968 with the Japanese YS-11 propjet and by 1972 the last 404 flew as Piedmont. Hated to see the old piston prop airliner go.

@James Cowan When Eastern needed more 40-seat airliners in the mid-1950s, the Martin was already out of production, so Eastern turned to Convair and bought 440s. While the older Cpnvair 240's performance was pretty much equivalent to the Martin 404, the Convair 440 was faster and carried more. By 1962 Eastern had retired all their Martins, but they flew the Convair 440s all the way into 1970.

I remember these planes very well! the Golden age of aviation, no fly by wire! aircraft were beautiful, and pilots really flew them. people had class, they knew how to dress, and had manors. the art of air travel is gone, it's just a city bus with wings. I don't fly anymore, and I grew up with the airlines, both parents worked for Pan Am in Miami . guess I'm just a bitter old flight snob! 😆 cheers 🍾🍾🛩🏳️🌈

I can relate to your comments. My father was a pilot with Piedmont for 40 years. He flew the DC-3, Martin 404 and then jets. He spoke often of the transition of air travel and passengers appearance from class to trash.

I remember those Piedmont 404s; rode 'em a few times. The first was a charter flight from Roanoke to Dayton, Ohio when I was thirteen - up to the Air Force Museum. It was at the old Patterson Field then - most of the exhibits were outside. The pilots let all us young cadets up to see the cockpit one at a time while in flight. I noticed that the old gray-haired captain was flying manually because he kept rolling that big elevator trim wheel back and forth while talking to me as the kids moved back and forth along the aisle in the cabin behind us.

Interesting how on shutdown the R engine stopped pretty quickly while the L engine freewheeled for some time.

My father was a demo pilot for an executive version of one of these in Eugene Or. Bar, Electric organ, seating for 12. Used to take all my High School friends when he was demonstrating it. Was a blast. Quite surprising short field capabilities. Corporate pilots used to King Airs were really intimidated by it. LOL

Was this the last airworthy 4-0-4? I looked this one up... still has a valid registration but a 5 year old pic shows it to be in pretty rough shape and looks like it hasn't flown in years, unless something's changed more recently.

What was the tail number of this particular aircraft? Does any one know whether or not it still exists? The film was shot twenty-one years ago. I worked for TWA and one of our mechanic's father flew these. Unfortunately the dad had crash time in one out of Pittsburgh in 1956, TWA Flt. 400, while being line checked by his captain.

+Richard Byrne I just found what I think is the aircraft number at about 6:22 in the video: N450A and on the eight side near the nose "450" I Googled 'Martin 404 N450A' and found this... flightaware.com/photos/view/2548233-a751d600e40e2cb2724d3dbabc931bc82d228026/aircraft/N450A/sort/date/page/1
+Richard Byrne She sure does. She belongs to and resides at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum at Reading Regional Airport, PA. I'm the webmaster for the museum. Here is a page I created about our 4-0-4. www.maam.org/aircraft/martin404.htmlI have a fondness for good old Eastern as I was one of the first Sky Marshals in 1971 flying aboard EAL B747s between based at JFK to SJU, MIA, and ORD.
