How? It’s not support people need it’s action. He bitched about the prices that wasn’t going to change anything, it’s a new PM that’s made the difference. Martin is great but he’s not a policymaker and the energy companies aren’t going to care about his rants, simple as.

lastweek a meter reader came out, today i got my new bill my cost has doubled, i was paying £120 a month, as of next month its £245 a month, im house/wheelchair bound live alone my only gas use is my boiler, electric use only ever one light on but laptop on 24/7 needed depending on how well my morphine is kicking in, i charge my electric wheelchair daily, the only heat i use is a small heatpad, and my phoneline for telecare support theres nothing left i can cut, ive looked at these electric wraparound blankets cost about £40 not sure on daily cost, bring on winter, not to worry these big energy firms making record profits or the supermarkets never ending price rises, many wont get past winter.
@alanhat5252

My supermarket 80 Watt electric blanket would take just under 2 units a day/58 units a month on full 24/7 but I've never needed 'full', it's normally on its lowest setting & under a thick duvet. I've had it several years & I live on my bed because I'm in a campervan. I don't know how it would last if it was on all day though, I've not tried that. Best of luck.

Martin, I fixed my rate at the beginning of August with Scottish Power, for 1 year, at a typical yearly use of £3,300 as my old fixed tariff had come to an end (was £1,120 per year). I did this knowing the rate predicted for October was going to be around £3,300 so thought it would be best to fix as predictions for January and onwards was going to be higher. As soon as the government said it was fixing at around £2,500 I realised I was paying more than the current fixed cap so asked to cancel my fixed rate (which had penalty cost but stated if you change supplier). To my relief Scottish Power cancelled my fixed rate and put me on the current fixed rate which is saving me £100 per month, untill the new fixed rate starts in October. Very happy with the service from Scottish Power

I am with Octopus. Was on the Avro variable rate (after they were taken over when Avro went under). On the MSE calculator advice I moved in late August to an expensive fixed rate (but looked that over time would be cheaper than the huge rises coming in). I also saw that this fix was not time-limited - I could drop out of the fix whenever I wanted, without penalties. With the new price cap, I contact Octopus today to ask to be put back onto the variable rate - they did it immediately, no questions asked. I have to say that Octopus really is a breath of fresh air when it comes to communication: send them an email, get a reply within a working day. (Had this twice now). And no, I am not an Octopus employee or related to anyone in that company :D Just wanted to share my experience if it helps others.

So glad you have clarified this! I'm very lucky to have fixed on a cheap deal 2 years ago (because of your advice Martin so thank you!) Knowing I'm in a very fortunate position I haven't dared mention my concerns to anyone, but I've been fretting over whether my cheap deal would actually be raised to match the new price guarantee rates. Such a relief to have this explained so clearly now. Not looking forward to when my fix ends in May but at least I'll have benefited from the cheap rates for just about as long as I could

If Martin was explaining petrol prices.. 'its not a limit on what you will pay, its only the rate, the pence per litre rate that is being fixed, if you drive 10,000 miles and another person drove 100,000 miles, they would pay 10 times more, yes you heard that right 10 TIMES MORE!, I'll say it again in case people didn't understand, its the amount you pay per litre, that's every litre that you put in your tank, not the total you'll pay in a year, not a maximum you will pay, its just the rate' thanks Martin Lewis for explaining this in every video.

We appreciate all your efforts Martin. The problem remains though that we are still paying more than double than we were last year, even factoring in the £400 from the tax payer. For many of us our incomes haven't increased to accommodate the cost of the higher energy bills and all its doing is forcing many to either eat into our savings or putting the bills on our credit cards. In both cases, it's still causing financial hardship for many. I think a video on how to prevent financial hardship (remember this is affecting many working people too who may not necessarily entitled to any benefits). Yes, it could have been a lot worse, but paying double from last year is still catastrophic for many and therefore the problem remains unresolved. We also need to investigate who ultimately benefits from those massive increases?

Who benefits? The gas/oil producers & the MPs who are getting kickbacks for not putting in windfall taxes. At the moment the gas companies seem to be just sitting on the money because they're still not sure there won't be a windfall tax, but it will be sitting in high-interest bank accounts so they're not going to lose out totally if it does get clawed back. A cheque for a £million lodged overnight at the Bank of England gains an awful lot of money & they've got £billions to play with.

It's an absolute disgrace that NOTHING has been announced regarding those millions of homes that use OIL central heating, not gas. I am one of those. I can only assume that they will fix the cost per litre of home heating oil and the difference will be claimable from the government by the oil distributors who deliver the oil to homes. Currently that cost is more than £1, triple what it was a year ago. Please put pressure on the government to provide the details for those using oil, and how that works with electricity bills which are separate. I am putting off ordering any more oil until we are given clear information.

Indeed. It’s essential to the elites that you take one of the delightful options in front of you. 1. Remain at home & go bankrupt. 2. Move into warmth refuges. The WEF fronted evil perpetrators of COVID, fuel & food prices & supply intermittency & ultimately to the UN2030 sustainable development goals, are our adversaries hiding in plain sight. It’s 6uild 6ack 6etter. You don’t need to believe in God for Satan to exist. You simply won’t realise it, because you’ve lost awe & are trained to believe everything is subject to logic. You’ll know good from bad, like picking a house, car or piece of meat. It’s the wrong question, the wrong sending faculty. What’s starkly obvious to me now, and it definitely wasn’t even visible to me in 2019, is that astonishingly, Satan is today in evidence everywhere yet most have banished the divine, God, from their daily spiritual existence. You’ll cling on to vain hope that things will return to normal. It won’t. If you knew what a few of us worked out very early, during spring 2020, that the entire Covid event was a psychological operation (PsyOp), you’d appreciate that this could only ever have been about totalitarian control and ultimately massive scale depo*ulation, using fake vaccines as the slow acting lethal injections. To those fighting, I salute you. A privilege to battle alongside you. To all the others, asleep, or in denial, or fully aware but counting their shoelaces, enjoy your boosters. You’ve permitted a few thousand people lye technology, plus corrupted people & institutions globally, to have all but succeeded in their global coup d’etat.

It's a Victorian home 130 year's old, gas pipes do deteriorate. If this happened to me when the prices are hiked further we would not be able to pay it. Can you warn people to check their pipelines or get them inspected if in an old house? It might save someone the same heartache. I think people might assume their house insurance will cover it, but it only covers explosion etc. Thanks for all you do for us 🙏

I do wish you would talk about the unit prices and standing charge rather than the typical use price the ofgem use. I understand that you think people are used to hearing about the average cost but while I understand the it's going up again bit, at the same time it means nothing. I'd rather hear the standing charge is going from X per year to Y per year and the unit costs from X per unit to Y per unit. The ofgem typical use them makes it sound so wibbly wobbly timey wimey (my favourite episode ever if you get the reference) which is to say I have a concept of what it means but it doesn't mean I understand it

Thank you for your information and updates, you seem less stressed since the government made the announcement. I did MSE's calculator a few weeks back and it made sense to jump to a fixed rate. Since the new "price cap" it now makes sense to move back to the standard tariff - One email and Octopus sorted it 😀- I have a question about Economy 7, But I'll post that on Twitter, once again thank you for making these videos and waking the powers that be (no pun intended) up!

I took my own advice last August when my fixed rate ended and did 3yr fixed rate with EDF on their "easy online 3yr fixed " deal which is £0.21p per Kw hr for Electricity and £0.0399p Per Kw hr for Gas. I saw this coming and told a few friends but no one took my advice.We will get the £400 from the Government but the elephant in the room is ,this money is debt and will need to be re-paid so all those people who think it's a win win position, it's not. Add this debt to the COVID debt and the already existing massive debts we have I can say with some confidence..............The UK will default within the next 20yrs. "I don't give a f***" I hear some say well good for you but if you have kids then you've just f***ed their futures.

Yes, you are right. All these hand outs will eventually have to be paid back. Government are gambling on growth rates in the future, but we are in a recession which will last longer than most folk think. This country has been badly managed for years because of political dogma. It's going to get a lot worse I am afraid.

Martin is a puppet for the government, I don't get how people don't see it. He's told you its Russia fault for the price hike. This hike started before the war. If he was a true honest man, he wouldn't tell lies for our government and would tell you this was all thought out in the G7 summit in Cornwall 2021. It's your green tax ladies and gentlemen.

I know it's some way off now, but I'm curious to know what will happen when the government subsidies end if the prices haven't returned to manageable levels. It's simply untenable for this sort of support to continue indefinitely. We need to to have a long term solution in place so we're not on the brink of this parlous situation again.

I am a pensioner and am unable to speak to anyone on the phone. I find this all too confusing. As one of the most vulnerable groups of people in the Uk how am I expected to know how to do anything that you suggest. I am only just able to send messages such as this, so trying to find out how much my current tarrif is, let alone finding a supplier who can offer a better deal is way beyond my abilities. Am I just meant to freeze to death this winter, while the computer literate, and mentaly stable prosper in luxurious warmth. I am too scared to even run hot water in case my gas bill is more than I can afford.

Just checked my EDF electric account this morning. Nothing about them wavering the £150 early exit fee as of yet. Am paying about 41p a kwh for my electric. Could save £140 a year by switching to the variable rate but the £150 exit fee cancels out completely what ever savings I would make. Can't afford to lose that £150 off my balance, am on smart pre-pay. Dammit, if I knew this price guarantee cap was coming I wouldn't have panicked and switched to a 2 year fix on my electric when they offered me back in late July 40.92p a kwh and 49p standing charge. My monthly electric bill at the moment is £73, if I switched to the variable it would be £62.

Right, thanks I get it now. The price cap fixes both the standing charge and the price per kWh used. When they kept talking about an amount of money going up from this old amount to the new one, is what confused me. Why couldn't they just say it the way you said it.

They did . Sadly they just like to complicate it. But you will struggle to get the unit rates they are offering I can assure you. Has anyone told us what the Standing charge will be or the max PPKW they are going to charge. And your energy company will tell you that is the average …. So you might just find you are still being overcharged. Pay attention…..they did this after April

Thanks for this Martin… Why do we pay two charges to access gas/electric? Why is there a standing charge, what is this for apart from making money for the suppliers?
@johnd6487
@johnd6487 Жыл бұрын
That’s a can of worms question - they were on about it on ‘You and Yours’ a few days ago. The standing charge is intended to cover the fixed costs of supplying you with power - the cost of the cable/ pipe network, the cost of giving you a meter etc. (Let’s be blunt, one way or another, no one else is going to pay for your electricity meter). Now though, they’ve lumped in a load of extras like the costs of sorting out the companies that went bust, hence the sudden massive rise.

They still get all the money they were going to increase it up to. The taxpayers is being milked via the government with interest over a long term period. So basically if you pay tax you are going to end up paying more back long term than if you paid the leccy bill when you were supposed to. Its a con trick the energy companies are only too happy to go along with as they are guaranteed full payment plus interest and no risk of mass non payments by the customer. Only people who win are the energy companies and non tax payers as usual !!! And your thanking him 🤔

Does the same principle apply to standing charges? I fixed in April, and 3 of the four charge rates are below the new cap so won't benefit. However, the gas standing charge is much higher (14p per day) than the new cap so is it likely to reduced?
