Yeah Conan takes a joke like a champ, which is part of the job, but he's also clever as hell trading jibes. He loves the repartee, but he genuinely only engages when the other party can take it, and never fires the first shot. Like Letterman or Ferguson he really loves when he gets to play with the clever crowd. One of the great late night hosts.

Steve Martin & Martin Short have had comedy tours together, specials together, charities and award shows together, they spend holidays together and even today have a TV show together. The other amigo probably doesn't even get a Christmas card.

Conan O'Brien is the closest thing to Johnny Carson we've had since the great man himself. Letterman was no Carson, he was too bitter. Leno was no Carson, he was too lightweight. But we have Conan to keep the tradition going. And, as I always say, Conan O'Brien is the funniest man on Twitter, the funniest man on TV, and soon to be the funniest man on the Moon.

Conan is far and away better than Leno and fallon but he’s not close to carson. Not from an impact and definitely not from an approach of interviewing guests. The impact is not necessarily his fault as he became a host in a different age but carson rarely made the interview as much about himself as conan does. Not that this is a bad thing, conan is more goofy and self depricating than carson was. Conan was closer to letterman than carson though not as acerbic as dave but both shared bizarre and quirky bits on late night as well as both being self-deprecating in general.

I feel that way about a LOT of comedians. I was just watching Bobcat Goldthwaite on JRE and I've always loved his comedy but he was such a spaz back in the 80s and he's so chill and intelligent and likable now. Conan himself has really gotten better with age, too. It's great to see artists that know what they're doing, are in control of their material and confident in their ability to perform to the best of their talents.

Great interview. For anyone who has Netflix and is interested, Martin Short and Steve Martin have a version of their traveling comedy show streaming called: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life. It's a mixture of song & dance, and comedy bits. It's a breezy, no fuss special that is funny and entertaining, with two men having a good time doing what they both love. I enjoyed it a lot.

martin short would make a awesome andy replacement, if andy ever decided to retire. His humor and wit is alot like conan's.... he is very animated and yet witty at the same time. Always thought martin short was a under rated comedian, but he has kept himself relevant somehow without constantly being in the limelight or pumping out one dreadful movie after another. (cough.....eddie murphy years back)
