I’m not sure whether Venus was tired from her 2 other 3 set wins before this match, but she seemed so lethargic and uninterested at times. Way too many errors. Hingis just had to keep the ball in play this match.

Venus was probably mentally exhausted more than anything… She had dominated the Tour from July 2000 winning Wimbledon, Stanford, San Diego, New Haven, US Open, Sydney Olympics, and made the final of Linz. Not to mention, she signed a Reebok Deal worth $40 Million after that success… Coming into 2001, I’m sure she felt some pressure…. don’t think she played a singles warm-up tournament prior to the start of the Australian Open, so the rust was there indefinitely for the whole tournament

Apart from 2017 and 2003,she never played that well in Melbourne for some reasons. Plus,Martina was a beast in Melbourne park.
