It's weird. I'm 62, and Stairway was a big part of my young life, as is unquestionably iconic. But The Rain Song, gives me chills, everytime I hear it. It's simply exquisite.

@mikedrake9506 it is. So is for your life, no quarter, friends... stairway is great, but radio overplay killed it for alot of us. Don't go into guitar center anywhere, and play stairway.. you will be asked to leave.. lol. It's a great song... just got run into the ground. There are so, so many more zeppelin songs out there that are just... amazing

In 1984 I was in college at Northern Michigan University, and I had an apartment right on the shore of Lake Superior. I remember being awake late at night in the fall and I would listen to this song on repeat (vinyl LP) and stare out over the dark lake. I used to wonder where I would be in 5, 10, 20 years. Here it is 40 years gone by and I just started learning guitar this last summer (2023). Your videos have taken me from zero to hero in 6 months. I never would've thought that 40 years later I would be up late at night, staring out of my window over a dark and rainy Puget Sound ... but this time playing the song note for note on my own acoustic guitar. Your videos have helped me achieve a lifelong dream. Thank you from Seattle!

Nice memory of the Rain Song. It is a beautiful song I am learning too. I like all the different parts to it and the challenge. This is a song that stands on its own and is worth mastering however long it takes! I find everyone plays it a little differently so it is good to check out different people who play this. I think even Jimmy Page changed it around and didn't play it the same way every time. Marty helped me with a certain part that others didn't explain as well. Good luck!

Hi Marty, love this video. I was a London pro guitarist working in West End musicals, tours and sessions until in 2000 a car accident damaged the nerves in my hands so badly that my pro career was over. I could play little bit, then in 2020 I got covid which triggered a terrible disease in me which apart from nearly killing me left me unable to play at all. I was heart broken. Just recently l've managed to nearly come off the vast amounts of morphene that l've been on and have been attempting to try to play again. Recently l watched Page and Plant perform "The Rain Song" acoustically, which was mesmerising. Marty, your video has inspired me so much and has really helped me start playing again which l never thought would be possible. Today l got half way through the song playing it really nicely until the pain got unbearable. I'll carry on until l can play the whole song and do it justice. Then l'm gonna take on Larry Cartons epic intro to Steely Dan's "Don't take me alive". The many bends are making it hard for me even though l've dropped down to 009's! I would have been able to sight read it back in my pro days but sadly no more. Marty, thanks so much for your great videos, you're a great teacher, a lovely player, but more than anything thanks so much for helping me play again, l can't tell you how much it means to me. ❤

Man you just started a fire that burned out years ago. My late father in law was dying and I was the only one other than his wife that knew.. I geuss he could since that I knew his health was worsening and he clued me in that he had cancer and only a few months left. He also ask me not to tell his daughter or son. That was a hard request to keep but I did as he asked. I made sure to take my wife to see him as often as possible. He had one other request and this one I couldn't give to him. He give me his Jurassic blue telecaster and told me learn rain song and play it at his funeral. I lost his guitar to a pawn shop...one of my biggest regrets in life to this day. I vowed to never play again. This was about ten plus years ago. well I was gifted an Ibenez acustic plug in from an old friend...he wouldn't listen to me or take no for an answer. it's been rough trying to get the want to play again untill now. Thank you so much for this. I can't tell you just how to hankfull I am for you.

You're right, although zeppelin took more than just a little inspiration from the blues masters of old, there's no denying that they were a great creative force in their own right. This song has always been one of my favourites, and yeah, page did several fantastic acoustic numbers. It's just that their heavier blues rock sound that they are known for and that everyone knows so well often overshadows some lesser known gems such as this. Of course the fans know. Awesome song, but I'm still very much a beginner and the thought of tackling this song is a little intimidating to me at this point in time, so I'm gonna go back to something a little simpler before I come back to this beauty. But I will be back, and I'm gonna love being able to bust this out!

Ditto for me with the standard tuning many years ago, worked it out by ear. Then realized that it was in an alternate tuning. Attempted to learn it the correct way from Shut up and play tutorial but gave up as it was pain turning the guitar just for a song so have reverted to my own take starting at Bm. Having said that, the song in the original tuning by Page is sublime experience.

That definitely sounds like a Robert Plant lyric, but I think it’s actually growin’, not groin. All of the lyrics online say that (which I will concede, I’m always skeptical of those. They tend to be wrong all the time, but I think they’re right here), and on a few live versions I listened too it sounds more clearly like growin’. Growing also makes more sense lyrically, as the lyrics before reference springtime of love, symbolizing love is growing.

This is a great lesson. You nailed the chords. Some of the phrasing is a little different with the F shape slide down is sustained and the tough stretch you are doing is not needed. Live and on album he plays three strings per down strum so you can easily slide down and not do that pointer stretch.

Love the Lesson MY guy! Always thought this was Beatles growing up....grew up a violinist in a classical household, but played percussion in Marching band and Concert Band and had a great friend who didn't make Highschool Concert Band obsessed with Led Zeppelin...and the best set player out of the 4 of us in middle school......heard a cover of this song on piano, bass, and drums and was like no way.....didnt even know the name of the song cuZ my ears hear more the melodys and bass...Thanks for an awesome lesson about 11:30 thru the vid...love it so far....what a dreamy song....🤣🍕

Awesome Marty, this song sounds like a dream. Thanks for sharing your passion for the guitar. At first I thought it was just for the "rockish" guys, but I was wrong! The guitar is a beautiful instrument, very enjoyable and peaceful. Great lesson as always, thank you very much!!
