Khanyisa is so chill and confident. It amazed me when she jumped into the dam to swim with all these massive elephants when she was tiny, and sometimes only a tiny pink trunk could be seen. They expressed to her that she was family, and she accepted that and trusted that they wouldn't roll over on her. She has a great personality to be a matriarch one day.

@@herdelephantorphanage Oh! Thank you so much! I got all excited waiting, and anticipating the joy of this that I almost didn't say anything because I appreciate all the videos and was afraid it would be taken as complaining. It felt like going to your best friend's birthday party knowing that some of the wrapped presents would be wonderful to your friend. Then having to leave the party halfway through eating cake and ice cream and having to wait a week to find out about the presents. Hahahaha. I am more calm now. When I have seen them eating marula in the past, it permeated my being that their love for the fruit was so evident. I have never tasted marula but it makes my mouth water to see it. Some day, I have to find a way to make the marula orchard I dream about for these elephants to happen. Hopefully, I don't have to wait until I am in heaven and appealing to God to make more marula trees around the HERD homestead.

Adine, congratulations to you and all the carers for raising a tiny wounded orphan to such a happy and healthy young elephant! She is clearly thriving in the care of her human and elephant family. She is playful and affectionate and GETTING SO BIG! Next to her human family anyway, she is still tiny compared to her elephant family. 😄 I confess at first I was worried her foster mother Lundi didn't seem to be closely caring for her, but now I have seen more videos and have a better understanding of their history and herd dynamics. Lundi accepted Tiny Khanyisa on sight, allowing her to comfort nurse, of her own accord putting her front leg forward to give the baby access to her breast. And she was the bridge to Khanyisa being adopted by the whole herd. Now I understand with elephants "it takes a village/herd to raise a child/calf" is as true and more for elephants as it is for humans. And Khanyisa has no shortage of loving allomums, big sisters, big brothers, and aunties and uncles. I especially love seeing grown orphan Kumbura watching over Khanyisa as she did here in the water and immediately following her when she wandered off. With all of them, it is so heartwarming to see! And I understand now integrating orphans into a herd is delicate and difficult (from what I now know, mostly due to the inability of providing vital milk to orphans as even if the herd has lactating mothers, they can only supply one calf and will not starve and risk the lives of their own babies, so wild herds cannot adopt orphans sadly, and there is a natural barrier.) And Mischievous Mambo being Lundi's son complicates things, as he often sticks with his mother so it is best she keep his desire for dominance away from Khanyisa, as she is doing here. Yet despite these obstacles you have worked miracles integrating Khanyisa and pulled it off multiple times with all the previous traumatized orphans, Timisa, Kumbura, Bubi etc. So kudos to you and all of your team! Khanyisa was so tiny and so badly hurt by human hands it was difficult to watch and not be able to do more than send a donation. I wanted Lundi to be my avatar and give Khanyisa all the hugs I cannot. But since then I have seen Khanyisa get plenty of affection and protection and tender loving care from everyone, human and elephant alike (except maybe Mambo 😉). And now I know Khanyisa could not be happier and healthier, nor be getting more love and better care. You should all be very proud of doing such good work, not only with Khanyisa, but with the whole herd, and with raising awareness around the world and allowing people like me not blessed with such magnificent animals in our own countries to better understand and fall in love with elephants! 💙💜🐘

Seems like the waterhole might benefit by some dredging in the dry season when water is the lowest. We dredge out our ponds ever 2-3 years now as we have drought conditions over the hotter months so topsoil gets so dusy that muchbof it washes into the pond when it does rain adding many inches to the bottom of the pond. We actually learned that dredging it so it's deeper and holds more water keeps us from losing as much pond water to evaporation as there is more water depth. Being deeper may also let the elephants submerge deeper.

P.S. I would love to see more videos of Timisa and Kumbura when they were younger, if you have more. Timi looks exactly like the plushie elephant I had as a child. And Kumbura reminds me of my Babar L'Éléphant books, so family-oriented and elegant. Ha, an Elegant Elephant! 😜
