Their proportions just seem so... off? Like I realise the ones in rivals are highly stylised when you have characters like cap who's shoulders are 6x wider than his head at like 8% body fat but the ones in avengers 2020 are too far in the other direction. They don't look like superheroes at all. Black widow is supposed to be peak female physique and in avengers 2020 she looks like a rectangle... I guess my point is rivals is stylised and looks good, even if the physiques are highly unrealistic. The avengers 2020 physiques could absolutely look better while still staying within the realm of realism... But instead most of them look like someone's dad/mum wearing a cheap costume.

Its not the colors its the character proportion. All the avengers characters look like theyre afraid to commit to the actual character design. The men have no muscles and the women have no curves. It’s not even always the models so much as it is their stiff posture. Black Widow’s is a perfect example, with Rivals Widow conveying a clear personality of relaxed confidence with the hip thrown out and the lean of the upper body, while Avengers Widow stands like a kid awkwardly waiting for their mom to stop talking yo they can ask a question.

As a person who’s currently studying art, I just want to know… how did they ruin the proportions on the avengers so badly? Why are their feet so small? Why are their torsos so tall? Thor looks like he skips leg day, Hulk’s upper body is taller than his legs and crotch, Black Widow’s hips are nonexistent, and Hawkeye… man. Poor Hawkeye, he’s just a sad rectangle. The proportions just make this an uncanny valley goldmine. I mean… rivals isn’t even meant to be realistic, but the artists clearly had a fundamental understanding of anatomy. And style. And comics. My guess? Rushed casting and staying too much on model. The two good ones I noticed were Hulk (Except when he's blue for some reason, he looks, wrong) and default (or Infinity War?) Iron Man, and what do these have in special? Actual stylisation over the body shape. Everyone else lacks a figure both recognisable and one you'd imagine someone superhuman, they end up looking like just someone random, which is not as much on the actors as it is on the modellers as they could've done changes.

For instance, how Hawkeye’s body has very little muscle definition, despite the fact that he uses a bow which is a core and arm strengthening exercise. He should be much more muscular (especially in his arms and shoulders) than he is in the avengers game, which is just anatomy speaking. I truly have no idea where you got the idea that college professors are teaching students what you said, but… they’re not.

@ What I meant by it, is that better expresses the characters from the comics for instance instead of a tight bodysuit they add little details and nick knacks to the characters that are either important to the character or add to the style of the outfit (this being important because style is expression which leads to better expression of the characters). All of the designs from rivals give you a clear message of who is this character, what's their deal and, what do they do. The avengers don't really do that, all they do is put bodysuits on attractive people and that's that. I was trying to say that I believe that they more put emphasis on characterizing the comic characters through their designs and how they succeeded through that, and criticizing the avengers for boring, unoriginal, and drab designs. I dislike how the avengers didn't have much creativity with their designs as it leads to poor expression of the characters. me not communicating that is on me however and if you just like the designs for the avengers that's also fine. The enjoyment of character design is very subjective after all.

Why stylised artstyle is better than realism : 1. Less demanding on resource (graphics and disk spaces), especially hyper-real style 2. Consistent artstyle for each entry/sequel 3. Uniqueness, for example RE>7 and DMC5 characters look the same, while SF6 looks unique.

The problem with avengers is that they tried to make them look too practical, not necessarily realistic The last descendants showed that you can have video game characters that both look, attractive and realistic obviously But the stylistic choice for avengers was basically making them try to be as “practical” as possible

Not only the art style but the art animations too. MR did amazing to give animations & idle position that fit the SUPERHERO characters, meanwhile Avengers did it like some randos lazying around.

What I notice a lot about the Avenger character looks is that the crotch is quite low, the legs too short and the feet too small. Apart from the remaining terrible looks, that is a big aspect to why they look so damn strange

The lenght of the legs are anatomically correct in Avengers but compared to the idealized, long form in Rivals, they appear stubby and malformed in comparison.

@Alector12 they're not. The upper body is almost same length as the legs which is very odd looking. I, for example got legs almost double the length of my torso. And while humans are all built differently, here they're not really correct

​@@aurorasdrawingcorner human legs are long as their torso, all hands big as their face, their face can be separated in 3 parts, their hand reaches until the middle of their thigh, mostly... but theres always people who dont fit that. Rivals just uses whats seen as more attractive rather than realistic, like long legs and big eyes (which creep me the hell out but alas). You miss the point that rivals used shape language to lead their designs, you can do that in realistic setting and make it good, but it's a comic book inspired game, so it makes more sense to exaggerate.

​@Alector12 technically true. The ideal leg length to body ratio (body includes head) is 50-50 for men, and 55-45 to 60-40 for women. However, blackwidow looks the highest at 50-50 and the men look like the head wasn't even included in the ratio. Realistic, yes, but ugly even by our standards

Having actually played the avengers game, I don't think all of the designs were bad, especially in motion when playing as them, but they played a lot of it way too safe and could have gone far more stylized. Hulk's skins are generally pretty cool, and so are Thors, but those characters are naturally more stylized than the others. Some of Iron Mans were cool and felt closer to the movies than the comics, and Captain America had some cool skins as well, but in general it feels like they went a little too minimal with the designs, and a big part of what makes the designs bland is the very samey body proportions. A good chunk of Rival's style comes not from the designs themselves, but the super stylized body proportions which make the designs look naturally more dynamic.

Hulk actually looks pretty cool in Avengers and I prefer the Superior Iron Man from Avengers since I like the revealed face (and it looks good) Everything else is an easy diff in favor of Rivals
