The 2nd hour (post-twist) is great, but there is a TON of exposition in the 1st hour with very little development of our heroes. I needed more time to invest in them. I feel like if each Eternal had their own backstory explained before the climax, it would hold more weight and resonate more emotionally with the audience. I had people falling asleep in the theatre right next to me. It's not a film for everyone and I think that's why critics are hammering it.

I got to agree with you. The movie was better than expected. Not perfect and not without its flaws but pretty good overall to be honest. The cinematography in The Eternals is easily in the top 5 of MCU films. The natural lighting and on scene locations definitely helped. It was the scene of Sersi transmuting the very big you-know-what that really sold it to me as having one of the best cinematography in the MCU. The chemistry between all the characters was also really good. I liked Gilgamesh and Thena's scenes together in addition to Kingo and his valet. I think his Valet was a pretty good addition that didn't overstay its welcome as comic relief and added something to the overall story and its themes. I also like the exposition dump we got from Arishem and how it's implications really connected a whole lot of things together. Like why the vast majority of alien species out there from the Asgardians, Kree, Skrulls, Titans, Chitauri, etc. that we've seen are all humanoid and why most of them can speak English or are even biologically able to speak the same language and even intermix and a whole lot of other stuff. I even appreciated how they laid out a tangible reason why the Celestials exist and what they do (and its connections to Ego and Thanos with their plans). I also enjoyed the post credits and mid credits scenes. Although I am a bit unsure on how they're going to mesh Eros being Thanos' brother when the prior MCU films acted like Thanos was just a Titan and not an Eternal. Thanos' projected flashback illusion of Titan made it look like all the people looked like him rather than him being a mutant among his race. Was his whole quest to kill half of all life in the universe after the people of his planet Titan were wiped out all an effort to prevent further Emergences from happening? It's an interesting twist and recontextualizing of past information and it would actually provide an answer to Thanos' question of if killing half the population of the resources to save it from overpopulation is right or not, which I felt was never really answered within Endgame. The good guys defeated Thanos once and for all but they never really provided a philosophic counter to Thanos' Malthusian calculus philosophy. It'll be interesting to see the further films go further with this idea, nonetheless.

I don't disagree very often, but I do here. The film expects you to have some sets of knowledge. Knowledge of history and human development, character archetypes, how groups operate, etc. It builds on these instead of highly individualized character development. IE - Sprites crush does not matter - sprite position in the group and resulting depression matters. (if you understand Loki, you understand sprite) Lengthening the format could solve/deepen some motivations that were explained away, but would likely also shoehorn in character development and relationality that doesn't respect the audience. A long format ends up giving me a whole episode on a character like Phastos (which I would love), but I don't need that. I got the inventor - genetic fallacy - redemption in the family arc from the 3 scenes I was given, and they were great. Edit: ALSO the Blade teaser is very clear if you know what the Ebony Blade is... [which sprite mentions earlier in the film] It's also LITERALLY CALLED THE "EBONY" "BLADE"

If Disney+ had been around when the idea for this movie was first brought up, it may have been a show. But Eternals was announced a year before Disney+ launched. We have the power of hindsight so that’s why so many people have said Eternals should’ve been a series. But this movie was originally supposed to be released at a time where the only MCU series would’ve been Falcon & Winter Soldier. Had there been no pandemic that rearranged the slate, I wonder if the criticism had been the same.

1.3K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 Thanks for the fun video! 😎🖖 It was nice to see the wife again! Seeing the dog too, would have been a nice bonus! Hmm. A series format? If it was made for, "Disney +", I would miss out, as it costs money to use it! On, "ABC", I might get to see it, if I'm awake for it. Either way, small screen though. But not as small as this smartphone. "Deep"? What, as opposed to, "shallow"? Like in, "Shallow Hal"? 🤔. It wasn't "deep" to me, as I have no problems with the back and forth. I think that, "Lost", got me used to it. 🤔

My criticism of “The Eternals” is two-fold: 1. This pushing “Dune” off of IMAX screens seems unfair, since there maybe a crossover audience for both, 2. The amount of press from Marvel bragging about their “first love scene“ feels like they are breaking their arms to pat themselves on the back.

Endgame, for me, was just that… the end. Everything after are side “What If” projects. We could actually get films about all the colorful, interesting unknown Marvel characters, but we need Spiderman: Nursing Home and Captain Marvel: Manager Now!… knew this would happen. The MCU was too good to be true.
@DavesGroovesandCreations3 жыл бұрын
Very true. In my opinion, making at least a mini series first, setting up and teasing some of the characters in a separate movie, and then maybe making the movie a sequel to the show instead (perhaps even a crossover movie with other characters) would’ve solved some of these problems easily. 👍🏾

What you have to remember, is that Chloe Zaoh approached Kevin Feige to direct it. Because she claimed that Feige liked what she pitched. I’ve got a few ideas: 1- Cut the Deviant villain, as well as his fellow survivors. They add nothing to the film story or plot wise. This allows for more character development among the cast. 2- have the Eternals keep their memories from past lives so that their conflict over saving humanity, and stopping the Celestials birth has more weight. This also helps Thenas PTSD make more sense. 3- Make Phestus the main character. His journey and character development are the most interesting amongst the Eternals. 4- Remove the “MCU Humor”. Every time it reared it’s ugly head it was awkward, no one in my packed theater was laughing. Keep it subtle like when Gilgamesh’s raspberry pie feel out of the pan. 5- drop the after credit stings. We’re never gonna hear from Thanos’ rapist brother, or Blacknight and Blade again. This worked in Pre-Endgame Marvel because it all built towards the end goal. Be it the Avengers, or Thanos. I loved this movie but it is indeed heavily flawed.

Marvel Films has put out over 24 movies, none of which could be deemed failures. Because of this, audiences and critics alike have come to be somewhat resentful of the MCU-claiming it to be highly formulaic. Due to this, Marvel needed a failure. I think that’s what the Eternals is, a controlled failure. It won’t be a complete disaster, but it will still be widely seen as a critical and commercial misfire. Then, when No Way Home drops, all this talk of a predictable formula will be forgotten and it may very well generate a pre-covid blockbuster, box office haul. Just a theory of mine.
@DetroitAlan013 жыл бұрын
@Budgie Cat- it’s bonkers. But, look at the Eternals highly troubled publication history. No one cares about them at all. Then, look at the director Marvel got. It’s basically a retread of 2003’s Hulk-but with characters that were never popular to begin with. Feige’s too damned good for this to be totally by accident. Once again, just a theory.
@DetroitAlan013 жыл бұрын
@Budgie Cat - I’m holding to my entirely speculative theory. Why else would Kevin Feige approve a AAA theatrically released adaptation of a property even the most diehard of Marvel fans don’t care about and never have? Why else would he pick a talented director who was not a good fit for this genre? Feige knows what works and what doesn’t. That’s why he’s the one in charge of the MCU, and the MCU has been an unqualified success. Based on the work he’s done so far, it really does feel like this was failure by design. Too many questionable decisions by someone who, in general, doesn’t seem to be prone to that.

So, the way to fix a movie is...not to make a movie. I totally agree! Man, this movie is just not a good one. Not even for a comic book movie. Hate can not be the drive of the majority, because quality beats hate eventually. For exemple: you and Martin burning down Tarantino's house once a week in your show didn't hurt him because , guess what, quality wins...not hate.
