This is, in my opinion, one of the most accurate assessments of Tyson and Douglass' Tokyo performance I have heard or seen. Tyson was already in decline when he met Douglass but demonstrated tremendous heart that night. Meanwhile, Buster was actually committed and well-conditioned that night in Tokyo, motivated by both his recent, painful divorce from his wife and the death of his mother. This pain inspired Douglass to finally get in shape to display the monstrous jab, reach, hand speed, foot speed, size and combination punching that ALWAYS existed, but stayed mostly dormant due to a lukewarm passion for the sport, and consequently a reluctance to ever train properly prior to Tokyo. Sadly, he Douglass never demonstrated the same desire to conditioning again after this fight.

VERY well said friend. I would say all exactly that ! Douglas was overlooked by everybody but the only thing he lacked was commitment and desired- that one night he had it 100% and showed us all , especially a complacent overconfident Tyson , what he was capable of.. good fir him - a really nice fella apparently.

tyson wasnt i no decline he just got his ass whipped he thought he had a easy one he saw busta before and he thought he had a duck and u know tyson crazy because busta mother died but the dummy tyson took it the other way which is the wrong way he thought busta wasnt gonna be no good because his mother died and he should have thought he was gonna use it as motorvation when he heard that they didnt pull out he should have been worried right there and thats why he got his ass kicked and tyson already exemplified that he couldnt do anything with a tall big guy with a reach tony tucker took him the didtance and rocked mike and almost dropped him then quick tillis gave him all he could handle and was effing mike up mike dropped him but it was a off balance shot tillis was never hurt then bonecrusher took mike the distance he held a lil bit but he punched also and mike couldnt hurt him at all couldnt do nothing with him anybody who was tall and could fight and here is the key wasnt scared of mike they all went the distance and was never hurt and i still say tucker won that fight or it was a draw and then larry holmes did good and showed the blueprint jab tall and not scared and could box and fight but his hand got caught up in the rope and he got dropped but he was 45 mike was great agianst inferior competition but when he met that dude that wasnt scared it was over for him aka evander holyfield and the rest of them

Is it me or are people completely ignorant when analysing Tyson? He was a tremendous fighter, and at his peak (1988) was capable of beating any other fighter from any era. People seem to forget the 2 wars in which he was involved with Razor Ruddock, and was ultimately victorious in both. After he left Kevin Rooney, he was fighting at no more than 70 percent of his potential.

Tyson fanboy myths. Douglas was nothing special. He had a good jab and uppercut but no defense, no heart(being saved by the bell after a knockdown didn't disprove all the times he quit) and that version got snuffed by Tony Tucker, another good but not great fighter.

I don't believe Tyson was heading into decline, right after this fight he fought alex stewart and henry tillman and neither of them made it out of the 1st round, he then beat razor rudduck twice in a row and then had a 3 year stint in prison but when he came out he reclaimed the title, beat frank bruno easier then he did in the 80's, beat frans botha, golota, lou saverasse, some of the best wins of his career, yeah he lost to holyfeild twice but how do we know he wouldn't of lost to Holyfeild in the 80's? Holyfeild would always beat tyson imo. By the early 2000's Tyson was done, but the 90's was his prime apart from the prison stint.

I boxed for 21 years. I'm now in my late 40s and i do a bit of coaching and a bit of refereeing, so you could say that I've been around boxing for most of my life so far, and i have say that I've never seen anyone who even came close to Tyson in his prime - his prime being under Cus and Rooney. I've never seen any other fighter who beat so many opponents before they even set foot in the ring. I mean, most fighters are nervous before a fight, but Tyson's opponents were visibly scared before a fight! And that's because of one thing - they knew what he was going to do to them, and if you get in a ring believing that you're going to lose, you'll lose every time. I honestly think that had Cus lived another 10 years, Mike would've gone unbeaten for another 10 years. Also, let's not forget Don King in this saga. That man has killed more boxing careers than brain bleeds ever will. He's a scumbag.
@nocturne311
@nocturne311 3 ай бұрын
Great analysis. I boxed for several years as an amateur so I have a bit of a background for the sweet science as well and I completely agree. Tyson was a master of intimidation. Don King is an evil man, you're right, and I'm not sure if Mike would have gone undefeated for another ten years had Cus not passed, but I do know that Tyson was a completely different animal while being mentored by him. I would possibly throw Sonny Liston into the mix as far as the intimidation factor goes, but Tyson took it to another level still.

But Iron Mike on his Best Night BLOWS Buster AWAY on his Best Night away in 1-2 rounds. That may not be the case with Bowe, Lewis, and Holyfield, however...Buster would make them dudes work on his best night, and those 3 were phenomenal , elite all-time greats. Douglas fought nobodies for his whole career except Jesse Ferguson, beaten by Tyson, got knocked out by Tony Tucker, beaten by Tyson, he beat a broken Trevor Berbick on points after Tyson had destroyed him, then was wiped out the history books by Holyfield. Very true that Tyson became complacent and lazy...but the Tokyo Tyson was already a coked up psych ward prop.

Bullshit two friends of mine were sparring partners for Tyson and went to Japan, both said Tyson was in good spirits and was in top shape, he started the "short cut in training" bs to make him look somewhat better, he was simply exposed, from time he fought his first talented opponent his 19th fight James"Quick" Tillis, Iron Mike didn't always look invincible, his knock out streak against inferior boxers end at 18, while they were very entertaining, most had loosing records or had little experience, # 20 against Mitch Green went the distance, while he did get better and at times looked unstoppable largely due to the old adage "styles make fights" and Buster's style was all wrong for him with the exception of a very old Holmes most of the fighters Mike faced looked like they pissed their trunk's before opening bell where as Douglas went out center ring and pushed him across the ring, and started peppering him with Holmes style jab, he had no fear of him whatsoever, James was very good boxer and beaten some of the better fighters of that era and gave a master blueprint how to beat Tyson

@@user-cj1tc8zi4e lol no. He beat no top heavyweight even when he was at 100%. He had trouble with average fighters like tillis and Douglas. When he fought against actual top heavyweights or cruiserweight in holyfields case he got schooled. Now true for the Lewis and holyfield fight he was not 100%. But that is not excuse enough. Ali was never 100% after his 3 and half year layoff. Yet look at what he accomplished. Foreman was never 100% after being beaten ali but became the world champion again at a frankly ridiculous age. There are plenty of top fighters who fought past adversity and had the mental fortitude and discipline to make it again. And at much higher ages and at weaker physical condition than Tyson. Tyson was still incredibly young and if he had worked he would have achieved much more. But he showed his greatest weakness. A lack of champion mentality.

I remember Douglas when he KO'ed Mike Williams, who was considered a contender, on the Tyson/Tucker undercard. Douglas had size and he could hit. When he was in shape he was a potentially dangerous opponent. Tyson by this time had deteriorated. I remember thinking when he came to the ring against Douglas that he looked less in shape than usual. And Tyson was a short fighter without a long reach. That meant he had to come in and close the distance. At his best he would compensate for this with head movement and excellent handspeed and an effective jab. But when he fought Douglas he had no movement, no jab, was loading up for one punch and was coming in straight ahead. Really bad recipe against a bigger opponent with any punching power.

16:54...Rummy, I'm so glad you bring this up. I mentioned it on a video of the fight here on KZbin. In many ways, this is Tyson's most courageous fight. Because Douglas hit him with more punches than he ATTEMPTED. And like you said, in spite of that, he never stopped looking for a way to land a big fight changing shot. That's the disservice people pay to both fighters. Because clearly Tyson didn't mail it in. He was just losing to a superior fighter that night. And instead of just quitting or whatever, he maneuvered himself in to position to land that brilliant short uppercut in the 8th round. And then he DESPERATELY tried to end the fight in the 9th round...Douglas was hurt, but he ALSO was full of courage and his will was just stronger than Mike's...the counter he had that left Tyson on his tiptoes staggered, basically was the climax of their struggle. The 10th round and the KO was merely the denouement.

Mr. Rummy, good Lord! You're investigative Sports Reporting with your analysis is absolutely brilliantly presented. It reminds me of a brilliant Legal Brief. No human being can get hit with a perfectly timed upper-cut, followed by a solid & ferocious Left Hook, followed up by a solid Right cross. Mike Tyson received all three perfectly timed punches. Iron Mike was ruined by his Corner, but especially by his promoter too, Don King. He was surrounded by a bunch of clowns who put horrible ideas into his head. Robin Givens, & her Mother (Those two were the original Kardashian Skanks) also saw just how stupid & vulnerable Tyson was, & she too set up to the tune of a $75 million dollar Divorce Settlement. All that shit happened way before the Douglas Fight, & his head/concentrations/training were no longer a priority to Tyson. Buster Douglas' mother's spirit was also a huge advantage for Mr. Douglas who died a month earlier. Read more

I honestly can't express how perfect of a video this was for me. I have literally expressed the same opinions and thoughts on countless times and couldn't agree more with what was said. 1. Prime Tyson - Was under Cus and Rooney, regardless of age and physical prowess when he lost to Buster, he was not "Prime" Tyson during that match. You nailed it on the mental aspects of fighters and especially Tyson at this point of his career. Tyson under Rooney and Cus could beat any heavyweight in my opinion. The magic recipe (that you said didn't exist) was that they were able to keep him focused and hungry because he never wanted to disappoint Cus. He was desperate for his approval. 2. Douglas was MASTERFUL that night - Yes, the extra motivation from his mother's passing played a big part. Yes, Tyson's lack of dedication to his craft and taking Douglas too lightly played a big part. However, Buster was truly incredible that night. It wasn't a fluke KO (like Lewis losing to Rahman or McCall), buster fought a near flawless fight for 10 rounds following a strict game plan brilliantly designed to win that fight against Tyson. I am a huge Tyson fan (and no I don't think he is the greatest fighter ever and I don't blindly defend him against all valid points) and this is the fight I have watched the most of his illustrious career. It astonishes me every time I watch it, just how good Douglas was and just how bad of a beating that Tyson took for 10 straight rounds. That KO is also one of the most beautiful combinations I have ever seen. 3. Tyson's Chin - I think it needs to be highlighted just how much of a beating Mike took in this fight, nobody could ever say he didn't have a good chin despite his KO losses. He took beatings in his KOs and was not an easy fighter to put down, not like the one punch KOs over Lennox from mediocre fighters. Ironically, I think Lennox had the better career, I just point this out because numbers/stats don't always tell the whole story. If you ask me who had a better chin Tyson or Lewis, I would undoubtedly say Tyson despite 6 KO losses to Lewis' 2. 4. Douglas vs Holyfield - I have also pointed out that the Douglas from Tokyo would have made a MUCH different fight against Holyfield then when they actually fought. You can't say that Holyfield KO'd the guy that whooped Tyson and say well Holyfield would have whooped prime Tyson too. It is not an apples to apples comparison, because like Tyson in Tokyo, Buster did not have the same motivation and mentality when he faced Evander 5 months or whatever it was later. He was overweight and did not look the hungry (the right kind) in that fight at all. Would Tokyo Buster have beaten Holyfield that night, I don't know, but I always say it would have been a much better showing than what we got.

I agree with you. Douglas was great and won fair and square but on the night he would not have held his own against any heavyweight in history. Ali, Foreman, Holyfield and Lennox Lewis would have easily beaten him. Tyson was never a all time great.The 80"s was a weak era and yes Tyson did what he had to do and flattened everybody but he never faced true quality like Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Gerorge Foreman or Sonny Liston. Tyson was only 23 years old when he lost to Douglas. Past your prime with 23?...........Doesn"t make sense. Douglas was better than Tyson and that's it, nothing more and nothing less.

The only guys I see giving Douglas a real problem that night and beating him was Foreman and Holmes and Ali and Lennox Lewis. There's a couple other ones sprinkled in there. If you watch the fight again, as I have multiple times & just watch Douglas. His footwork, command of distance, his timing, punch power and accuracy, you will see just how good he was on that night. The best boxing performance I’ve ever seen. Getting up from that vicious uppercut in Rd.8 just to add to it. Sadly he just didn’t prepare for Holyfield, and could have gotten up. He’d achieved his goal and it will never be forgotten. Tyson has said himself that it was HIS greatest performance because he didn’t quit and always wanted to be perceived as a warrior, but also said that Buster kicked his butt that night. Great video and breakdown from Rummy. A very knowledgable boxing analysis of what’s considered a fluke. It wasn’t. Buster was just perfect that night, regardless of Tyson’s mindset, preparation and lack of respect for his cornermen.

That Douglas would've been a problem for anyone 200-240 pounds in the heavyweight division, Lennox Lewis included. Obviously, his weaknesses made him more susceptible to certain styles, as is the case with all great fighters. He had stupendous movement, a fantastic jab, and fought in rhythm. But Tyson was TAILOR MADE for the man that walked in the ring that night. A jab to keep his rush at bay and the superior reach to work off of it. Tyson was completely flummoxed. I've said this many times, but people don't understand the finality of loss and how grief works. I think his mom's death and his son's mother's illness gave him something in the short term to focus on. But once the euphoria died down, he was without his best friend. I lost my dad suddenly in 2008 when he was just 51. I was strong for a lot of people in the weeks that followed. But once I moved, I would start crying out of nowhere at night and often couldn't sleep without a drink or sleep aids. We didn't see it coming, so all of the things you want to say but can't, the elements of life you're living without someone that means so much...it takes a toll. And Douglas was CLEARLY depressed before the Holyfield fight. He wanted to be anywhere on planet Earth other than that ring. That wasn't laziness, that was grief. It is the most tragic set of circumstances surrounding two of the most high profile heavyweight fights of the last 30 years. The same forces that propelled him to his greatest heights are what brought his life down...remember, his depression got so bad, he almost died in a diabetic coma due to all the weight gain he had. But on that night...on THAT NIGHT...that man who was in the ring whoopin' Mike Tyson...he would've given them all a run for their money.

@@FelipeVieira39 Well noted. Look at his style before he fired Rooney. The body work he would put in to soften up his adversaries. He degraded into a head hunter looking for quick knockouts. Also, look at the lack of urgency in his corner from the trainers in this fight. They are whispering instead of prompting him to work the body and jab his way in. There's a fight where Tyson complains to Rooney that the opponent is holding. Rooney's response, "Bullshit, you're not punching!" Douglass's effort was herculean and you can't diminish this. However, he beat an ill trained Tyson who went into this fight suffering from syphilis. There's a reason Buster lost in three rounds in his first defense.

If you do a little research into Tyson's personal life and the insanity going on you can easily say he started declining when Cus and Jimmy Jacobs died. When Don King fired Kevin Rooney and replaced him with Aaron Snowell. Snowell, who had NEVER been a head trainer before was asked to train the heavyweight champion of the world. A fighter that was becoming more and more difficult to get to work in the gym as his personal life with Robin Givins was spiraling out of control. Snowell had no experience in the Cus'Damato peek a boo style that made Tyson so good. Snowell was so inexperienced he didn't bring an enswell to the ring that night in Tokyo. An enswell is a piece of metal trainers keep in a bucket of ice. It is used to help combat swelling around the fighters eyes. It is total incompetence on Snowell's part, as Tysons left eye began to swell his corner had no way to control it. If you watch the fight you will see Snowell using a rubber glove with ice water in it as a replacement for an enswell. With that eye swelling he had trouble seeing those straight rights coming down the pipe. Tyson was not prepared to fight that night, his corner was incompetent and his head trainer was a incompetent moron who only got the gig because he was black and was willing to work for Don King cheaply.

If the internet was around in 1990 I don't think the odds would be 40-1. Tyson started going downhill almost immediately after firing Kevin Rooney. He looked sloppy and threw far fewer combos when he fought Bruno the first time, and got caught with some good shots. Two fights later he's knocked down in training, and showed up for the Douglas fight not taking it seriously. Tyson mentally didn't show up, and Douglas had his Rocky moment. Never take tune up fights, imo. I think if Douglas trained with the same tenacity to fight Holyfield as when he fought Tyson he might have had a shot, but he laid down and became just another fluke. A fluke who changed heavyweight history forever, and not for the good. Would have loved to see Holyfield v Tyson in 1990.

Changed history not for good? He showed to the world, that everything is possible, when you put your mind to it. Tyson was a god-like fighter by that time, and Douglas not only defeated him, it wasn't some controversial split decision. He battered Tyson the whole night and then knocked him out. After raising from the floor himself. And with Tyson not training properly, not taking this fight seriusly, and Douglas's mother passing away 3 weeks before, it's just a great warning for all fighters, damn, all people. Tyson had all the talent in the world, he had great gift, but didn't do his part to win. On the other hand, Douglas wasn't as talented, suffered a great tragedy, that could have broken most of people, and raised above it to achieve greatness. It's like a fairy tale story. You don't see stories like this even on big screen, because it's better than what people can imagine.

One of the biggest superfights of all time, one we never really got to see. Mike Tyson spent nearly four years out of the ring, fought a couple of setup fights and then fought Holyfield, thinking Evander was spent. Entertaining fight, but imo not the fight we would have gotten in 1990. Douglas had no intention of taking on the heavyweight mantle, so he just played spoiler. His right, and Tyson's fault for not taking the fight seriously, but while the upset was the talk of the town, it really derailed the division. At least Ruiz looks to repeat his win in the upcoming rematch, and might just be fearless enough to give Wilder a run for his money should they unify the titles down the road. Douglas had skills, but was a fluke. I'm just still mad because the Douglas fight was on my birthday, and I had JUST gotten HBO so I could catch Tyson fights from the comfort of my living room lol. I do believe that Douglas had a shot against Holyfield if he prepared like he did against Tyson. Holyfield proved himself vulnerable to big heavyweights with a strong jab. Who knows?

they still had bookies mate. Believe it or not people bet on boxing way before the internet. you could go to any casino before any big boxing match and have a bet with the bookies. And believe it or not its a well known fact that for this particular boxing match Tyson was so favored to win that the the bookies refused to take bets on the bout.

@@capitalcitygoofball1987 you point out that Tyson was out of boxing for four years and only had a couple tuneups before Holyfield - Holyfield was sort of considered a shot fighter by the time that Tyson finally took the ring against him... there's a good argument that it is BECAUSE Holyfield was considered a shot fighter that he even was offered the fight. It was a relatively easy payday for Tyson, or so it seemed - certainly a bigger payday and less risk (so it seemed) than what was a pretty competitive division at the time. There's no way in hell that Tyson's people were EVER gonna put him in the ring against Lennox Lewis, I'll tell you that... by the time THAT happened, it was Lewis doing to Tyson what Tyson had tried to do to Holyfield - get a nice payday with relatively little risk

I remember while watching the build up during the PPV before the fight, that they said that one of Douglas' parents had just recently passed away and that Douglas was dedicating this fight to them.

Read more

Bingo. Which is exactly why Holyfield beats Tyson in any era. Their styles turn their fights inevitably in to a battle of wills. Holyfield's will was INDOMITABLE. He beats Tyson in 1989. He beats Tyson in 1991. He beat Tyson in 1996. He beat Tyson in 1997.

Very true. One of the greatest assets to a fighter is his mental fortitude. That can be the no 1 defining factor in a career or even an individual fight. Look at ali and Frazier and how their wills were unwavering and unshaking. Holyfield the indomitable warrior. Just a couple of names among many other true greats. Tyson doesn't hold a candle to the true greats. I disagree with a lot of rummys opinions in this video. Tyson had a weak mentality that was build on the foundation of cus dmato. When cus died and was no longer able to provide that base it was clear that Tyson was himself mentally weak. Now to be fair he had a disgusting childhood and he was a scarred and in many ways broken person. I don't necessarily blame Tyson for it but the fact of the matter is to be a true champion and all time great that is something that is not optional. It is a requirement. Whatever the situation and history of why he didn't have it is irrelevant to the point. The fact he didn't have it is devastating and it showed through his entire career.

I've just finished reading the book on the Tyson Douglas fight (its on both men's careers before & after) it's called 'The Last Great Fight' & well worth a read. What came across was that Douglas had all the talent in the world but was very much a reluctant combatant, he was easy going by nature and mostly took that attitude into the gym / ring for most of his career. In my opinion if he'd kept the determination he had for the Tyson fight throughout his prime he'd have been one of the best heavyweights of the 90's. In fact had things panned out differently the 90's heavyweight scene could have been a golden era, Tyson, Douglas, Holyfield, Bowe and Lewis - could have been awesome. Unfortunately Tyson goes to jail, Douglas cashes out, Bowe ducks Lewis and we were all left frustrated.

Yeah though Lewis is the best of the 90’s IMO since he defeated every boxer of his era, and Holyfield fought literally everyone, the best of the best, he fought Mike, Douglas, Bowe and Lewis and while he didn’t win them all, he was a true warrior and he’s a close second

I’ve read that book - it’s terrific and essential reading for true boxing fans. Btw Tyson “ trained” for this fight by banging Japanese waitresses and whores every day , only occasionally visiting the gym.

Hi Geoffrey: A boxing fan I am from birth. I am very blessed in knowing how to think. but, there is no way I could articulate to myself from within, nor any other way, my views on Buster Douglas "Tokyo Douglas", as accurately, precise, and on the money as you have. I thank you for all of those who have watched and are to watch your breakdown of the Douglas event in Tokyo. It's one of the best lessons in boxing from the fan's point of view that anyone can watch and hear. You are indeed the very best. Thank you - Again. Sid
