@JohnWick-lk9xq10 ай бұрын
@@SPIDERM0OSE mate leonard lost this fight I just rewatched the whole fight and here are my round by round thoughts: Round 1 Hagler lands the only hard punch of the round but neither lands anything of significance. Leonard moves beautifully, Hagler relentlessly follows, not allowing him any room to breathe. Gorgeous movement from both men. Could easily be a round that goes to either, but I would give it to Leonard by a hair. 10-9 Leonard Round 2 Again, it’s like a textbook of one guy running and the other cutting off the ring. Wouldn’t see another example at this high a level until the first GGG-Canelo fight. More punches thrown this round, Leonard landing some good ones, Hagler got a couple harder ones in there especially those short check hooks, he lands two of those on Ray. Ray holding way too much, even jumps at Hagler at one point just to hold, doesn’t even throw a punch. Another close round, because Ray again comes alive in the final 25 seconds or so, and you can hear his corner calling it out to him. It’s a toss-up round that I would give to Hagler because the punches he landed felt more significant. 10-9 Hagler, 19-19 Round 3 Leonard lands his most powerful punches of the fight, a handful of really good shots over the course of the round, but his movement has slowed quite a bit and Hagler lands more and harder shots, easily winning the round. 10-9 Hagler, 29-28 Hagler Round 4 God, Leonard’s hand speed is ridiculous. Some of these punches he lands are just strictly from speed and his ring IQ in knowing how and when to throw them. His movement a little sharper in this round and he really brought it more to Hagler this round. You can tell that Hagler’s punches are harder, but Leonard, even with the couple of uncalled low blows, takes this round for sure. 10-9 Leonard, 38-38 Round 5 Man I forgot how good this fight is. It’s a great fight to use as an example of fighting styles and how to approach. Leonard is on the outside and even though he has slightly less reach than Hagler, he’s got the distance figured out to such an extent that his range shots have great landing percentage. However, this is also the round where Hagler figured out how powerful his uppercuts can be while Ray keeps having his arms out (either throwing or trying to clinch). He hammers Ray with some of these inside shots and check hooks and stuff. I’m not sure what the stats say about this round, but Hagler landed the more significant and powerful shots, so I’m giving it to him. Also the extent to which the announcers are in the bag for Ray at this point is hilarious. “Hagler keeps switching to orthodox, he’s so confused by Leonard he doesn’t know what to do!” Or he’s changing his stance so he both cuts off the ring and Ray never knows when or where the punches are gonna come from. It’s actually high level ring IQ from Hagler, which would frustrate most opponents, but Ray isn’t overly worried about it because of his own ring genius. 10-9 Hagler, 48-47 Hagler Round 6 Hagler starts off getting some really good shots in, jabs from distance and short hooks inside. Another great example of styles from this fight is the comparison of defense. Both fighter’s defense was underrated, as Ray could make you miss from his movement and range mastery, while Hagler was made from pure steel and concrete and takes so many punches on his arms with his blocking. However, as this round goes on, Hagler seems to slow, while Ray stays steady. Ray connects on a great number of punches and even though Hagler came out looking great in the opening minute or so, Ray took this one. 10-9 Leonard, 57-57 Round 7 Ray’s movement has slowed a lot, and he is using his arms to try and control Hagler more than dancing around him. Leonard’s ability to adjust his style while still engaging and defending himself is incredibly impressive. Unfortunately, he only lands maybe 2-3 hard punches which thanks to Hagler’s iron jaw he doesn’t even seem to feel. Leonard lands a bunch of ticky tack nothing punches, but it seems like even an arm punch without his whole body behind it from Hagler is thudding into Ray hard. Hagler definitely takes this round. 10-9 Hagler, 67-66 Hagler Round 8 Hagler is dominating to the body, those shots digging into Leonard over and over again. Some of these shots would take out even great fighters. Ray’s ability to take punishment is not talked about enough. He really was a complete fighter. But just like the announcers, who have moved away from slobbering all over Ray over the last couple rounds, have said, Ray’s punches have nothing on them. The combination of his lack of power and Hagler’s iron chin means nothing he’s landing with means much of anything at all, while even Hagler’s lead jabs are hitting Ray hard. 10-9 Hagler, 77-75 Hagler Round 9 Hagler is just teeing off at one point, and Ray’s chin is showing to be amazing. Ray is again hitting in flurries, and even landing some good hard shots in there. But Hagler is just pounding to the body and landing too hard of shots to the head to be able to give the round to Ray. Both guys are absolutely exhausted in the round, and with good reason. 10-9 Hagler, 87-84 Hagler Round 10 Leonard’s best round of the fight, he lands some flurries but also some hard shots, and Hagler is exhausted. Ray is too, which is why Hagler is also pounding away on the body and landing easy shots to Ray’s head too. These guys are just incredible fighters. I give this round to Ray, but it could easily swing to Hagler with how much each guy is landing their shots. 10-9 Leonard, 96-94, Hagler Round 11 Again, Hagler lands the more significant blows throughout the round, but I think Ray lands enough here that I feel alright giving it to him. 10-9 Leonard, 105-104 Hagler Round 12 Ray lands a ton of punches that do nothing to Hagler. Again and again Hagler lands to more powerful and thudding shots. It’s a great fight but Hagler definitely takes this round, no matter Ray’s showboating. 10-9 Hagler, 115-113 Hagler Overall thoughts are that it was closer than I remembered, but I still really don’t see how anyone could score the fight in Leonard’s favor. If given the swing rounds, I could see it being a draw, but a win for Leonard is something I can’t possibly watch this fight and come away thinking is right. Dont forget the criminal scorecards 115-113 hagler 115-113 leonard 118-110 leonard the last judge lmao only gave hagmer round 5 and 12

@@monkeyb1820 Sorry, but "rocking" isn't in the scoring rule book. And my opinion has nothing to do with Leonard's style. Practically everybody, including those who believe Hagler won the fight, state that Leonard won the early rounds, so your giving one round to Leonard is clearly partisan. Partisans on both sides view this fight through rose-colored lenses. Those who say that Leonard won almost every round or that Hagler won almost every round are obvious examples of this. Unless you're knocked down or out, a point is a point. I simply think that Leonard scored more points than Hagler.

I agree with you 100 percent. So many stupid comments surround this fight. Like how could anyone say, Hagler won and NOT give Leonard credit for his chin? Did anybody think Leonard was going to brawl or try to smash Hagler? That did not work out for Ray in the first fight with Duran-- though it was entertaining and competitive. The game plan for Hagler, was to first make him look mortal, get in his head, and then steal a decision...executed to perfection. Ray watched him for years and waited for Marvin to slow down to a version he could beat... banking he himself would have enough left in the tank to exploit him. Remember, Leonard was diminished too-- plus a 5 year layoff. As good as his footwork was here, he was older and slower and after piecing Hagler up numerous times, he was not able to exit cleanly without getting hit. That is what made the fight competitive. As you indicated, much of Hagler's forward pressure was ineffective because he couldn't catch him and because often times when he got there, Leonard was waiting with a barrage of punches, that either matched or exceeded Hagler's output. Leonard swung for the fences without fear of big counters. At times he rough-housed him, at one point grabbing his neck, and pulling Hagler's head down. I do recall the compubox numbers being largely in Ray's favor...I think he landed significantly more punches than Hagler threw. It was a puzzling performance by Hagler-- who went conservative in a HUGE fight again, as he did against Duran and Vito Antifuermo the first time. At times he is throwing pitter-patter punches content to score points while Leonard was swinging for the fences. He never hurt Marvin, but it was one of many things Leonard did to sway the judges. I think Ray won it outright by being the busier fighter. Again, puzzling by Hagler, because he knew of boxings politics...took him 50 fights to get a title shot when he was clearly the best middleweight in the world. He had to know he needed a finish. Puzzling indeed. Had they fought 2-3 years earlier, Hagler would have been more dangerous but Ray would have danced circles around him-- exiting without getting hit etc. It would have been boring and one-sided. They fought at the perfect time to give us one for the ages.

@@StevenSmith-zw1pd I think the fight was mostly even. But, what turned the fight in Leonard's favor, is the fact that more of his shots hit the target. They were clean shots. This was the last fight of Hagler's long, 67 fight Hall of Fame career! A career that saw Hagler hold the highest knockout percentage of all undisputed middleweight champions, at 78%! I don't have the time to give you as many thumbs up for your comment. It was a popularity decision. Sugar was more flash than substance and that's what sells. The Brockton Brawler!
@dougdickason Жыл бұрын
@@seanmeaney6154 you can call Leonard's punches flash, but the truth is, is that in this actual fight, Leonard's punches were more effective than Haglers, slow, lethargic attempts of his previous self. Sorry to say,. Hagler just wasn't the great he had been and that's a big reason Leonard came out of a long retirement to fight him. I figured Leonard would be in trouble before the fight and would have to be at his very best to even have a chance with the greatest middleweight ever. The sad thing is, is that Leonard wasn't even at his all time best, but even with the rust of a long retirement, he still had the skill to beat washed up Hagler.
@seanmeaney6154 Жыл бұрын
@@dougdickason I'll agree with Hagler being on the back nine of his career. He may have been walking up the 18th fairway. However, Hagler was the reigning Champ. To take the belt Ray would have had to win convincingly. Not only did he fail to do that, I and most others didn't think he won at all. Just another middle finger to Marvin. He never got the respect he earned. It's nice to see that has been changing with his passing. He deserved it years ago
@dougdickason Жыл бұрын
@@seanmeaney6154 I'm not sure you can say "most others" agree that Hagler won. I think it's mainly the people who don't like Leonard who felt that way. I was almost as big of a fan of Hagler as I was Leonard. I was about 8 when I saw Leonard win the gold medal in the Olympics and I followed his whole career and I got to see a lot of Haglers beginning with his battles with Antifuermo and Minter and then Hamsho. When the fight was announced I was worried Ray would lose and maybe badly because he had been off so long. I have watched the fight 20 times at least and have scored it closely close to 10. I have scored it being bias for Hagler and for Leonard. I have scored based on the stronger shots and ring control and ring generalship, defense,footwork, body punching, and all the things that make up a fight. I only ever had Hagler getting a draw. I didn't see Hagler dictating the fight in a dominant way. I felt that as much as Hagler tried to control the ring, Leonay used that against Hagler much of the time. The harder punches is what gets me."Oh Hagler landed the much harder shots than Rays pitter patter fluff," but I didn't see(or hear) that. If the knockout king of the middleweight division was landing all these "much harder blows" than Ray, then what was the welterweight, retired for 3 years, blown up Ray doing NOT getting knocked out, knocked down, or cut. He looked better after the fight than before, so these devastating blows Hagler landed really left their mark. I saw (and heard) Ray landing crisp combinations to the head and body. He was landing the lead right some too. The 9th round when the announcers act like Ray is out on his feet is a joke too. Hagler landed one good shot, like a hook uppercut, his best punch of the fight, and really didn't land anything much after that although the announcers would have you believe he was about to get knocked out, then Ray came blasting out of the corner with not just pitter patter but with good shots. That reminds me, I watched it many times with the sound off because the announcing really is distracting when trying to score. I felt Marvin gave away the first 4 rounds with the fourth round being a little closer. Then basically the rest of the fight was even and I wouldn't cry if someone said Hagler won the final 8 by a 5 to 3 margin although I usually had it 4-4. So most times I scored it I had it 115-113 or 116-112 for Leonard. Also this ridiculous idea that you can't win a title unless you absolutely dominate the fight is a joke to me as well. I felt Leonard did enough to win and if you want to make a rule where you have to win a unanimous decision by 4-5 rounds in each card to get the title then make that rule and start a boxing association.

After this fight I stopped watching boxing for a few years. It was clearly now a show & not a fight. For anyone commenting this was the greatest fight ever ... are you serious? Throughout his career Marvin was never respected the way he should have been. This night was no exception. It was clear that Hagler was much slower now & the recent wars with Hearns & Mugabi took a lot out of him. Leonard was on & off retired & had much less miles on him. But Hagler landed many more meaningful blows throughout this fight. Leonard put on a show & stole rounds he virtually did nothing of substance in. In a decision you have to decisively beat a champion, especially when it's Hagler who should have held legendary status. Watching this still bothers me to this day. No disrespect to Leonard, but considering the quality of opponents Hagler fought I consider him the greatest fighter of my lifetime & I'm 58yrs old

@@scrapperd7827 Hagler blocked many of SRL's punches, but it's about more than just punches. It's also effective aggression, defense, ring generalship. Leonard danced and ran, Hagler came to fight. It's no surprise that many media outlets scored it for MMH. One of the judges was entirely corrupt.
@monkeyb18202 жыл бұрын
I agree. We will never know the truth, but I seriously wonder if there wasn't some kind of fix going on. Hagler was in excellent physical shape. He rocked SRL with around 30 seconds left in the 5th, but he really showed no killer instinct. That is the part that is odd--how Hagler just didn't show killer instinct or really 'rush' SRL, even though it was obvious the entire time that SRL's punches had no effect on Hagler at all. I'd think that if you're MMH going against some blown-up weakpunching SRL, you'd rush him, roughhouse him a bit. But he fought a very 'subdued' type of fight.

Fantastic fight and incredibly difficult to score the winner. Haglers constant barrage of forward attacks versus Leonard’s amazing skills, reflexes and showy combinations. I remember watching this live and thinking Ray had just edged it and having watched it maybe twenty times since, I haven’t changed my mind. He used every trick in the book, playing to the crowd and no doubt manipulated the sentiment in the arena which may have swayed the judges, but at the heart of it was his speed of punch. When he lets those blurring flurries of punches go, they seem so much more crisp and solid than Haglers constant wearing down approach. So ultimately, it completely depends on what you look for in a fight. Brilliant contest and RIP to Mr Hagler.

Hagler outthrew and outlanded Leonard..landed more power shots and was the aggressor ..you have to take the man's title...that isn't done by running and slapping..ray won over the crowd and 1 judge (the other bought and paid for) but didn't win the fight...Vegas was never kind to Hagler while it loved Leonard as all the stipulations favored Ray.

Hagler didn't have to take the fight or the conditions . Remember this was not a mandatory fight . Its no good bitching about bigger ring Lighter gloves and 12 round instead of 15 when Haglers camp was in full control of the conditions Even 1 governing body stripped haggler of his belt. It was about $$$$. Hagler got his pay day and it come at a price . If he wanted to keep them belts he would have gone out and destroyed Leonard

This is a masterclass in the difference between a boxer and a fighter, everything else being equal, the boxer will always win. I can say this with complete impartiality as I am a massive fan of both of them . Watched it first time around and thought there was nothing between them , watch it again and it's easy to see how Leonard used his brain to superior advantage, mostly stayed on top of Hagler, throwing combinations at will. Total respect to both of them and a special RIP To Mr Marvellous Marvin , that fight was legendary, both of you were winners that night for the performance you put on.
@dfolegna5 жыл бұрын
Hagler made several mistakes: boxed the first 4 rounds right guard, losing all of them. Never trying to do what is not your speciality ( he's a lefty ). He was much slower than in other fights ( like the Mugabi ), maybe it was not the same guy of few years ago. He chased Leonard all night, playing his game, like everybody did with Mayweather. Another thing I did not understard, seems when leonard was on ropes, he did not throw with full force, looks like the did not want to hurt. He was throwing to the body, slowly, getting countered too often. Such a professional would have changed after 2 or 3 times. I've heard consiracy theory about a fix, take the money and leave the belts, a huge rematch, hagler on drugs, etc. A very close fight, compubox was on leonard side, the real night was on hagler. I still don't understand why hagler was not hagler that night. Imagine hagler lefty from the beginning, high guard, cut the ring after 2 rounds, throwing violent combos ....
@greganderson14454 жыл бұрын
I agree. Hagler looked slow that night. I think the accumulation of fights caught up with him. No matter the decision, I was disappointed in Hagler's performance and for him to hope to get the decision. He should've known from the results from his early years that he needed to win convincingly.

The fight that ruined boxing. (1) Ray Leonard took PEDs to move up in weight to fight Hagler. (And Hagler was taking PEDs for years.) Now everybody takes steroids. Every heavyweight is a George Foreman. (2) Ray Leonard insisted -- and got -- the standard 15 round championship fight reduced to 12 rounds for this fight. And it's never gone back. We'll likely never see another 15 round championship fight again. Thanks much, Sugar Ray.
