Agreed - it says something about how screwed up things are in a society when marrying a 12 year old is the better long term option! Also it says something about us that we are weirded out because of our assumptions, noble child marriage back then didn't work like child marriage now works. Why because the people involved were not idiots or completely sick - there was no point to noble marriage if one half of the union can't have children/ getting pregnant right off the bat kills them. Hell in GOT they made a point of not marrying Sansa until she bled. It ain't great but it is us that jumps to that conclusion not the books even though we know that is why Viserys picked Alicent - she's old enough for him to want to mount.

This is true and all but no matter how legal or acceptable something was, there were always those who opposed it, for moral reasons more often than not and those criticisms need to be taken into account when discussing these people instead of a blanket "it was a different time" and acting like they can't be criticized as a result.

@@KushGee Most of the time it's modern day people with modern medicine and almost guaranteed child survival rates judging medieval people for marrying girls at 13 where children had a minuscule chance of actually making it to adulthood. The sad reality was girls had to start having kids as soon as they could in order to actually have children who live. Do you think women partying through their 20s and settling down in their 30s would have flown back then? NOPE.

Old King Jaehaerys named Prince Baelon heir to the Iron Throne after Prince Aemon the older brother and original heir, was killed. He passed over the elder Prince Aemon’s daughter Rhaenys (the Queen who never was), despite her seniority, in favor of Prince Aemon’s younger brother. King Jaehaerys and the Great Council of 101 again bypassed Rhaenys and her son Laenor Velaryon when Prince Baelon suddenly died, naming Baelon’s eldest son Viserys Targaryen (brother of rogue prince Daemon) as rightful heir to the Iron Throne. So it’s very ironic that King Viserys would then go against established norms and declare his daughter Rhaenyra as his successor and heir, rather than his oldest true born son Prince Aegon. Also ironic that Viserys disregarded the very traditions (ie the male line takes precedence over the female line) that named him, his father and other male Targaryens (eg Aegon the Conqueror, Old King Jaehaerys) as heirs to the Iron Throne. Let the Dance of the Dragons begin…

The best thing about "the differences" is that the book was written by a maester and so, he didn't have the whole truth :D So in many examples there's actually no contradiction :D But yeah - the creators made some changes to simplify (not changing maesters) the whole thing or make it more interesting (including lord Corlys on the council).

@@professionalboycottservice7872 Has the show implied that all Velaryon's have always been black? Or is it something recent? Because as far as the books go, we don't know who Corlys's mother or grandmother was, any of them could've been black. Another explanation could be that since coming from Valyria, they've mixed with another very famous naval society, the Summer Islanders, which could make sense in this world since both are known for been sailors. This actually could've happened even before the Velaryons left Valyria since by then the Summer Islands had already established a trade network with them, and it wouldn't be surprising for them to mingle with Valyria's own top sailors, the Velaryons. Point is, Velaryons been black is not an issue.

Child marriage was NOT a regular feature of medieval society, if by "child marriage" you mean an adult male and female child! ARRANGED marriages there were, and often that did happen between 2 children, although any marital relations were years down the line. Even if they wed a much younger girl to a much older man, they rarely consummated such relationships until the later teen years. Now, that's still despicable by our modern standards, with forcing people into marriages and beds in which they did not want to be happening far too often. Yet their standards for adulthood were not the same, either. Marrying 50 year olds to 12 year olds wasn't a regular practice, though, by any stretch of the conditions of the time!

It makes sense if Viserys have a lot of texts about Valyria because Aenar was prepared when he left, the doom happened only 12 after it so he had time to take dragons and all his family belongings with him. Maybe even Velaryon and Celtigars have things from Valyria in this time. My bet is Targaryens lost a lot of these things AFTER the dance and much more after Aerys II death. Aegon was still alive when Jaehaerys was born Jaehaerys while it wasn't good Jaehaerys lived with Visenya a few years at Dragonstone. There was no reason for Aegon and Visenya lose their books from Valyria. The Targaryen family were pound of being Valyrians the only ones I think would want to destroy these thing would be Alicent who didn't like their culture and maybe her children. Aegon II showed he didn't care much about Targaryen family when he changed the red dragon to a yellow one to symbolise his dragon. Bailor the blessed burned a lot of books he disliked that we know for sure. But we know that even after all this they had something because Meister Aemon knew a bit about dragons and he was concerned about Daenerys not knowing. However with his death Targaryens basicaly lost every thing. Daenerys barely know to speak High Valyrian, she know nothing about dragons, about her house, westeros or Valyria. I beat she would not be able to read a Valyrian book if she find one.

bro made an intellligent thumbnail choice lmaoo. But fr when I was reading fire & blood some time ago I imagined corlys velaryon similar to the targaryen, white asf, violet eyes and shit, as they were also from valyria, and it doesn't make sense whatsoever for the same civilization to have severely different phenotypes regarding skin color while the hair stays the same white (like what?). But, anyways I, understand why HBO made that choice - westeros was a white based continent inspired by medieval england and all, so it wouldn't include people from other ethnic groups, therefore making them feel the need to turn some families into black families due to lack of representation (although a great part of essos is black, they're not that relevant to the series). Don't get me wrong, a velaryon black family looks badass asf, just a bit strange two families being of "the same pure valyrian blood" while the skin color varies significantly - tbh places like dorne should be the ones with black inhabitants

@@stuffynosepatrol force racism? This is what you understood? You are so eager to see diversity that except the fact that you answered almost every comment in this video you fail to see some common sense and consistency. Yes it is a phantasy world. Yes it has it's own guidelines. But, all stories need to have some coherency. It is obvious that you have no idea of how storytelling is constructed. This specific universe is a typical medieval phantasy one, inside a setting that in it's core resembles Europe. In those times, child marriage was common, same as slavery, misogyny, elitism and (yes you guessed it) racism. If you keep all of them and conveniently remove racism, specially when it is highlighted how important blood purity is, then in it's own set of rules it makes absolutely no sense. The story is inconsistent and an audience with a three digit IQ level will not take it seriously. Personally, I think it's insulting for black people to have roles like royalty in a European setting because this overshadows all the hardships they had to undergo in order to reach the status that have achieved. Make no effort to explain it, this race change was 100% done for diversity reasons and it looks ridiculous. And this comes from a person that likes the show. I would rather see a bada$$ black character with his own well developed origin story, than a blackwashed one.

I never read the books even though I have Fire & Blood on my phones. But I do know how most of this ends. What I hope is why not end it with a little more optimism? It doesn't have to match the perfect ending of Top Gun: Maverick. It doesn't need a Disney ending. But something that can make us feel really good and make us feel it was worth our time. I hope the final shots of this show has Aegon III ruling and showing some happiness over Westeros. Look up who his parents are if you want to read spoilers. I don't want this series to end simply on deaths and everyone is miserable and depressed. It doesn't always need The Godfather endings which each one was extremely tragic or bittersweet. Give us the ending that Game of Thrones should've got, HBO! We invested emotionally to these characters for so many years. Just another slap in a face if it ends with tragedy again. Give us hope and smiles. Not sorrow.

Daemon "Rogue Prince" Targaryen is a gawd damn GOT-verse SUPERSTAR! Every time he shows up, it's like Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. He's the scene stealer. He sucks up all the air once he enters the room. Our eyes are glued to the screen. Do you see how female viewers look at the screen when Daemon shows up? It's like all the hot women going crazy over Elvis! He was barely featured in Ep 2 and you sense his presence gone. You were curious when he'll show up? The thing is Daemon has traits mostly from a villain. He's callous, power-hungry, attention-seeking, childish, narcissistic, disobedient, volatile, unpredictable, etc. But then he's so charismatic and complicated enough, you're still interested watching him. You still want to root for him like Jaime after he saved Brienne from getting gang raped. Daemon still has a soft spot for his family. "He still has good in him" the way Padme saw it with Anakin. The bad*ss with the heart of gold sells. Daemon is an alpha male. Viserys is beta. Daemon was already very popular among book fans. You can go on Reddit. This was years before GRRM said that Daemon was his favorite. And leading up to this show, I saw all the hype about him. He's living up to it in this show. I hear Daemon's death is more epic than most people's lives. And his life seems epic already. He's an instant fan favorite for people who never read the books. As a warning, there will be something bad that Daemon does that will make some people feel anger towards him. He's not a boy scout. He's no Steve Rogers or Clark Kent. But hey, Thanos seems worse than Hitler. He's popular. Anakin killed younglings. Vader is still popular. Jaime pushed Bran from a window crippling him for life. So I guess whatever bad thing Daemon does do 🍷🧀, it may not affect his popularity and your feelings towards him when the series ends. For Daemon fans, make sure to buy his action figures and Funko Pop! toys. Anything with his name on it. T-shirts, hats, plush dolls, Halloween costume, whatever. He's now the Darth Vader and Boba Fett of GOT-verse characters and merchandising. Get your Rogue Prince merch soon! The GOAT character of GOT-verse! GOT's Darth Vader!

Not it doesn't. But from the overall description of Targaryens, Velaryons and Celtigars--you can't fault people for thinking they'd have Valyrian phenotype. The same way you would assume Dornish characters to have tanner or browner skin tone, Northmen to have whiter skin tone with Yorkshire accents, or Yi Tish to be East Asian in appearance. That being said, if anyone from Westeros would have mixed with Summer Islanders (where dark skinned people in Westeros live) ancestry, I could better accept it if it is the seafaring Velaryons. My headcanon for the show is simply: "probably his seafaring ancestors married someone from the Summer Isles." Which, if anyone in Westeros will do that, it's the oft-traveled merchant mariners or the Dornish--due to geographical proximity. Of course, I did not study the entire Velaryon family tree before coming up with this thought and this is more defendable IF GRRM left unexplained parts of it.

Gotta love the blatant racism in the comment section complaining that Lord Corlys Velaryon (A character who is never stated to be white anywhere in the three books he is featured in, and who comes from a family which at the time of the show has become somewhat infamous for marrying into other families from other regions of the world to further their reach) is black. Even though this video is literally a list of ten completely different differences between the books and the show, these people expect this one specific part of the story to be book accurate when it seems that very little of the two episodes we have gotten are accurate to the books at all. I wonder why people are throwing fanny fits over this one possible (and let me emphasises that this is only a POSSIBLE) inaccuracy when the show so far is full of them. I wonder why these people are so disturbed by seeing a black Velaryon but are so willing to ignore every other inaccuracy and diversion from the books in the show. The show doesn't have to be exactly like the books, if you want the story from the books then go read the books and stop bringing your blatant racism (oh sorry, I mean "anti-wokeness" 🤓) to a show that clearly doesn't cater to you. I get it, you want a story where there are only white characters in the main cast, great, go read the books and imagine Lord Corlys Velaryon as a white guy then. Edit: most of the comments are just proving me right to the point where I don't even think they read past the first sentence.

Set it in England, France and Spain. Oh, depending on when you set it in time, you will see moorish knights in spain. I am really annoyed by people talking about fake diversity. Honestly, it is a great choice. If you had 20 people with white skin and silver hairs running around everybody would get confused. Especially when they are flying through the air. Its just the reverse of the whitewashing debate they had about the sorceress supreme in dr strange. It was not whitewashing, they just wanted to sell the movie in china, which is kinda hard when you have a tibetan monk. Sooo... the whole culture war debates are missing the point because most of the time it is just practical choices.
